Quest to reopen Hwy 40 continues Friday night

Joseph Passanise’s new effort, dubbed “Operation Reopen 40,” will hold its first meeting tonight — right before the Lindbergh bridge gets knocked down.

According to his release, the meeting will begin at 9 p.m. “on the west side of Lindbergh Blvd. under the Highway 40 Bridge…. scheduled to be demolished at 10:00 p.m.”

As he continues: “Only perfect conditions of light traffic, good weather and no accidents can prevent gridlock on the present highway system that has little capacity to handle imperfect conditions of heavy traffic, bad weather and accidents.

“MODOT has lied by telling us that Highway 40 would never be closed, and risks our safety by reducing lane width and shoulders on I-44 and I-70. Now, MODOT wants to make sure the closure of Highway 40 is irreversible by demolishing the Highway 40 bridges over Lindbergh, Brentwood and Clayton-Warson within the next three weeks….”

Attendees are advised to “park your car on one of the public parking lots within the Plaza Frontenac Shopping Center or the LaChateau Village which are located on the Westside of Lindbergh Blvd. Walk about 5 minutes to the walk area on the west side of Lindbergh Blvd. under the Highway 40 Bridge.

“Do not walk within the travel lanes of Lindbergh Blvd, but stay on the shoulder and walk area. Bring a flashlight and dress warmly. Feel free to bring signs. By assembling and walking along the shoulder area we are exercising our First Amendment rights of free speech.”

Good one susyjax!

Sounds like JP is encouraging an act of civil disobedience. Will they be in an area that would be unsafe during the explosion? Will they have to be removed by police? Is that the objective to make more news?

Like it or not the shutdown has occured. Changes now will result in more pain than will otherwise be the case. Time to have changed this was before it happened, not after.

Oh brother…make that “combination”

I don’t think they are going to blow up the bridge. I thought I heard on the news they would just be knocking it down. Either way, they will most likely be in the way of the demolition process.

Is Eric Vickers behind this?

I would love to see them tear down that bridge but I don’t want to associate with those people. And I don’t think MODOT’s objective is to tear down the bridges in order to make the shutdown irreversible. But to actually rebuild Hwy 40 by tearing down bridges that are forever old and dangerous. Why do so many people in STL see government conspiracies everywhere they turn. Here’s an idea, maybe the government actually wants to improve their citizens lives, they may not do the best job of it. But they are certainly not plotting to waste our tax dollars as much as possible and ruin our lives.

Joe is the Republican’s answer to the Dem’s Bill Haas.

Wow. When will the incessant whining stop? This has to get done. Don’t these people see the exposed rebar, the cracks that go down to the subroadbed, and the extreme danger of driving 60+mph on a road designed for 35-45?

But no, it’s all about them and what they want.

The bridges are coming down because there’s no choice but to rebuild them in their entirety with the condition they’re in! Didn’t people learn anything from past bridge collapse disasters?

Grow up and deal with it.

What is it with this guy? It’s over, done. All he’s going to do is cost the taxpayers money, or slow down the work.

He’s becoming worse than that judge who sued the dry cleaners. Doesn’t he have any other hobbies?

> Joe is the Republican’s answer to the Dem’s Bill Haas.

Pretty much. Except that Haas actually won an election or two.

Jo,

I read on John Combest’s site that Ed “Bunch of Mexicans” Martin was going to be speaking to a Republican group tomorrow night. Any chance you or someone else at the paper will cover it and ask him about his smear campaign aginst Scott Eckersly? He eating off the public trough for almost two months after he got fired and he needs to account for his actions to the public.

Please place this in the PD suggestion box if you won’t cover it.

Thanks,

Brad

The PD suggestion box? Good one, Brad. But in all seriousness, anything that could be construed as reflecting poorly on Republicans will get prominent coverage in the Post. So I don’t think you have to worry about this.

Your use of “bunch of Mexicans” shows that you are not interested in truthfulness - otherwise you would be compelled to put the comment in context or not use it at all.

That leaves us with dismissing your comments as irrelevant and undependable.

Either some of these posters are the 6 or 7 dumbest people in the city or, the explanation I prefer, MODOT gave their employees a friday assignment to blog on behalf of the project. We’re not against doing the needed construction and improvements, you twits; we’re just against them deciding to do it by shutting down 64/40 completely for at least two years when they told the community for the previous 10 that that wasnt in play, that all public input told them not to, that they did it to save themselves $100million and the best guess is that it’s going to cost the region and the state at least 10 times that amount, plus increased deaths probably especially on the narrowed-laned no shoulders I-44, and when they didnt do the economic, traffic, safety and environmental studies they were required to do by law, and when they shut it down in violation of Missouri Constitution Section 29 prohibiting shutdowns except for welfare or safety reasons NOT COST! in a selfish and insensitive we’re going to do what we want and St.Louis can go to hell in a hand-basket manner. And even if it’s not a disaster, which most think it probably will be, how they went about it is/was still wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong! It would appear that they seem to be above the law, and that’s not right!!!!!!
Got it!!!!!
