Sinquefield, Schnucks come through for Slay

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Has Mayor Francis Slay’s recent troubles helped his fundraising?

As noted many times already, Slay has been the target of ire since the ouster of ex-Fire Chief Sherman George, the only African-American to ever lead the department.

But, if nothing else, the mayor remains financially strong: His quarterly campaign report shows he raised more than $230,000 from October until the end of last year.

About 20 percent of that total came from two major benefactors: the Schnuck grocery clan and wealthy financier Rex Sinquefield.

The Schucks gave $20,000 in smaller contributions from holding companies registered to their development company, The DESCO Group. (The name stands for Don and Ed Schnuck Company, the brothers who founded the grocery empire.)

Sinquefield — the wealthy free-market advocate and school choice enthusiast — gave Slay $25,500 using the network of PACs that have quickly made him the state’s most prolific campaign benefactor.

The Sinquefield and Schnuck donations represent a strategy that Slay and others have used increasingly to maximize totals from large contributors, despite the newly-reinstated campaign limits.

Though individual contributions are capped at $1,275, businesses that control multiple shell companies — or, in Sinquefield’s case, political action committees — can donate thousands more than the average supporter.

That said, the vast majority of Slay’s contributions this time around came from smaller donations — two and three figure checks from restaurants, lawyers, civic leaders and members of his cabinet.

Slay even showed that he is comfortable moving in between party lines. Last month, he accepted a donation from Bert Walker, former ambassador to Hungary and local kin to President George W. Bush. The check was for $1,000 — the same amount Slay’s expense report show he donated to Hillary Clinton’s bid for the White House.

“comfortable moving between parties lines” - if he took from Sinquefield, that’s comfortable enough between party lines for me. He may give to both parties, but because he’s trying to clone economic reps from dems. next he’ll be trying to clone social reps from dems. just a thought.
it would be interesting to know how slay’s doing this from small donors; havent read about fund-raisers, so having Joyce A. et al doing calling/mailings for him or what?
good post!

Mayor Slay is a liberal, and endorses liberals on the national stage. I don’t understand why any so-called “conservatives” are helping him. I wouldn’t help him — the whole bit with the effort to recall him is his own chickens of liberal race policies coming home to roost.

What conservative? You mean Republican, don’t you? There is no such thing as a conservative. The front runners in the Republican race are more liberal than any of the Democrats…even Hillary. Conservative has come to mean incompetent and “only for the money”. It is about time “conservatives” start thinking of their country instead of their party.

By the way, I am not bashing Puggg…just stating facts. True conservatives are good people, but the people who claim to be “Christian Conservatives” and are in charge right now, are neither…Christian or Conservative.

By the way, Jesus was a radical liberal…according to the “Conservatives” of the time.

The “so-called conservatives” are likely to continue to help Slay because he is much better for St. Louis than those that are trying to remove him from office.

I’m certain St. Louis can do better, but not with people like Eric Vickers!

Jo, while this doesn’t belong in this thread, i’m curious as to whether or not you will post a thread regarding your “mothership’s” new article about the cloned human embryos in California.

It is certainly a telling situation, and it speaks volumes about the Amendment 2 lies.

Slay is a good mayor period. He is liberal in the same sense that Buzz Westfall was liberal: not very.

Slay doesn’t endorse liberals per se. He endorses people from the same political party that has put him where he is. No one in his position would do anything different.

I agree that Slay is not much of a liberal.

He is however, a thief and a liar. and by Ken’s (# 4) definition therefore a conservative.

of course Ken is wrong… but there you go.

With the City of St. Louis having only one party these last 40 years we are left with the choice of ‘bad’ and ‘worse’ much like Cuba, China and Russia.

All this goes a long way to explain why now the City is left with those that are fighting for their place on the dung pile (like Slay) and those people that can not claim out of the sh*t.

P.S. Sinquefield is giving because of the schools and their take over… nothing more.
