Smith turns down Colbert

Various sources tell Political Fix that state Sen. Jeff Smith, D-St. Louis, has dropped plans to appear this month on Comedy Central’s “Colbert Report,” with Stephen Colbert. The reason: the writers’ strike is still going on.

The Colbert Report is among several news/talk shows that have gone back on the air in recent weeks, despite the writers’ strike. Producers for the Colbert show, and the companion “Daily Show with Jon Stewart” have said they were unable to persuade the writers union to give them the sort of agreement reached with David Letterman’s outfit.

In any event, Smith was invited on the show because of the continued success — especially in film festivals overseas — of Frank Popper’s 2006 documentary, “Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?” It tracked Smith’s unsuccessful 2004 bid for Congress.

Too bad for the film company that would’ve made money off the movie sales, but good for Smith. Hopefully his principled stand will pay off in the long run.
