Steelman kicks off campaign — and Democratic barbs
Democrats wasted no time going after Republican Sarah Steelman, whose bid for governor is just hours old.
Only days ago, Steelman was in the kitchen of her parent’s Jefferson City home, announcing that she would run again for state treasurer.
But, as we learned this week, politics is full of surprises.
On Saturday, Steelman was in a similar setting - the kitchen of her brother’s home in Springfield - to announce her push to replace Matt Blunt in the governor’s office. (If one day Steelman decides to run for yet another office, she might need more relatives.)
At the announcement, Steelman seemed a tad hesitant when asked if she supports Blunt’s 2005 health care cuts, which, had he run again, would have been a key vulnerability.
“I’m not here to Monday morning quarterback Matt Blunt’s administration,” Steelman said. “There were hard decisions that had to be made.”
The exchange was captured on - where else? - YouTube, and can been seen below.
Steelman said she would roll out details of her own health care plan in the coming weeks. Nonetheless, Democrats released a statement accusing Steelman of supporting policies that “moved Missouri backwards.”
Meanwhile, Steelman has the bare bones of a campaign Web site up- no information on her experience or the issues yet, but there is a page to submit financial contributions.

The attitude of Mr. Wagman and Democrats who are already going after Sarah Steelman is a prime example of what is wrong with politics and the PD’s political reporting today. The remark about a bigger family is (in PC Democrat terms) “mean spirited,” And attacking Steelman for switching her campaign from Treasurer to Governor is absolutely ridiculous.
Apparently, Mr. Nixon and his party are not happy about Steelman’s entry into the governor’s race.
