With campaign on the ropes, Romney gets a Talent boost

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Republican Mitt Romney turned to a familiar local face to jump start his sagging White House hopes.

Former Missouri Senator Jim Talent was in Boston this week, seeking to put a positive spin on the back-to-back losses suffered by the ex-Massachusetts governor.

The setting was a mega dialing-for-dollars push held at the city’s convention center, the second installment of the event that got Romney and Gov. Matt Blunt pictured together in the New York Times almost exactly a year ago.

This time, rather than serving as an unofficial campaign kick-off, the fundraiser was to convince donors Romney’s presidential bid is not on life support.

According to the Boston Globe’s Political Intelligence blog, Talent played the role of sports analyst:

He likened Romney’s plan to win the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary to a boxer trying to knock out his opponent in the early rounds. Now that Romney has finished second in both those contests, he said the nomination contest will be more like NASCAR’s Nextel cup — in other words a longer race to collect delegates from later states.

“The issue is not primary finishes so much any more,”said Talent, a Missouri Republican who is now a Romney adviser. “The issue is delegate count.”

Later, Talent conceded that Romney had been blindsided by Mike Huckabee in the Hawkeye State, and just didn’t have enough time to recover.

“We did not foresee Governor’s Huckabee’s rise in Iowa. The governor got occupied in Iowa, as he needed to be,” Talent said, according to the Globe blog. In New Hampshire, Talent said, “We were surging in the end, and I think had the election been two three days later, we would have won.”

OT, but I saw that Jim Talent received a passing reference in the Doonesbury cartoon in last Sunday’s comics section. Wonder if that was a first for him.

I love this. How in hades does coming in second in two(the first two) primaries qualify as being on the ropes?

Guiliani didn’t even try to compete for Iowa or NH. Romney comes in second. Romney is on the ropes. Where does that put Guiliani? In the third row?

Amazed, not only was it the first two battles, they were very small in the number of electoral votes in the first place.

Why do you think Giuliani didn’t spend much time in either location?

Giuliani didn’t spend much time in either location because he figured he was going to do poorly in both. This way, he can say it is because he didn’t try, not because he is a doomed candidate.

Hmmmm: Let’s see now, Talent the 2 time looser here in Missouri joins up with Romney, the 2 time looser in the primaries. Anyone for the third loss??

Gee, let’s see…in the 3rd Congressional District Democratic primary the first time that Russ Carnahan ran, he finished second in St. Louis County, St. Louis City, and Jefferson County, yet he didn’t drop out of the race? In fact, coming in second in all three places allowed him to go to Congress as he had the most votes overall…wonder if Romney will have this situation with delgates to the RNC national convention.

Mitt Romney is a cipher and will soon be gone and forgotten. Jim Talent? Who the hell is he? LOL

Why in the world would anyone want Jim Talent involved with their campaign in any way shape or form?? He lost to Bob Holden and blew a perfect lay-up oppportunity by Blunt when he lost to McCaskill. Now Talent and Gregg Keller have almost sunk the SS Romney and ex-Talent hand Rich Chrismer just helped get Blunt indicted.

Anyone who employs Talent and his cronies deserves what they get.

Just an off-subject observation about how people complain about being labeled, or put into one category or another, then identify themselves by their race or sexual orientation. Interesting….

One obvious fact that’s being left out by the Romney people is that he spent bucket loads of money in both places, was in both Iowa and N.H. long before most of the others and STILL came in 2nd. He even broke the revered llth commandment against his fellow republicans and STILL came in 2nd. Imagine Ronald Reagan is rolling over about now. How much did he out spend Huckabee in Iowa? Was it 6-1?

It is a consolation to find that occasionally money can’t buy something–at least for Romney.
