Akin, Blunt, Gibbons weigh in on tragic Kirkwood shooting

Here are the statements just sent out by U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, R-Town and Country, and Gov. Matt Blunt, regarding Thursday night’s tragedy at Kirkwood City Hall. Also, the statement issued Friday by state Sen. Michael Gibbons, R-Kirkwood.

Here is Akin’s statement. His district includes Kirkwood:

“My thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones as well as those who anxiously await news about friends or family who may have been injured during the shootings.

“As details emerge on the tragic event tonight at the Kirkwood City Council, we are all deeply saddened by the scope of this tragic act of senseless violence that has shaken our community.”

Here is the statement from the governor:

“Tonight our fellow Missourians in the city of Kirkwood were terrorized by a senseless and horrific crime at an open government meeting.  We know at this hour that this crime has resulted in the loss of life and an investigation is under way.

“The men and women of Highway Patrol Troop C responded to the reports of the shooting and were on the scene to assist the Kirkwood Police Department and St. Louis County law enforcement. I have directed the Highway Patrol to provide whatever resources are needed to assist local law enforcement in response to this horrific crime.

“I join Missourians tonight in praying for the victims, their families and friends, and everyone in the community of Kirkwood.”

And now, Gibbons’ statement:

“We have suffered a tragedy of unimaginable proportions. Council members Connie Karr and Mike Lynch, City Public Works Director Ken Yost, and Police officers Sergeant Bill Biggs and Officer Tom Ballman were lost working for us, and our hearts and prayers are with their families and friends.

“They were vital members of our community, and they will be missed.

“Our hopes and prayers for a speedy recovery are with Mayor Mike Swoboda and Suburban Journals’ reporter Todd Smith.

“Now is a time to weep; a time to mourn. Then will be the time to heal. And heal we will. We will never be the same, but we will come together, support each other, and rise above this.”

Happy now? Gun nuts happy now? Conceal and Carry Crazies, happy now?
Ask the families of two slain police officers if we need more guns on our streets….
Happy now? This is the price we pay because rural red-necks like to shoot squirrels every October….Happy now.
Over one million Americans killed on our streets by gunfire since 1968. That equals over 250 Iraqi wars.. Happy now.

Thanks for your concern Congressman,….Governor.

Will Akin come up with any logical and sensible plans to prevent future tragedies like this from occuring again in his district.

Mrs garrison, do you have any proof that the killer yesterday had a valid CCW permit? You are aware that City Hall was a no gun zone, so the criminal was the only one with a gun. Partisan hacks like you make me sick. 5 people lay dead and you want to take issue with guns. You are no better than those who are making a racial issue out of this.

Mr. Bellum:

Fact: Both of the slain officers had guns. One of these guns was used by the killer to take the lives of subsequent victims.

Fact: The NRA opposes ALL efforts to control gun ownership.

— Robert M Walsh
1:34 pm February 8th, 2008

Mr. Walsh, as most anti-gun extremists, has completely misrepresented the NRA’s position. Whether he doesn’t understand it himself, or is just lying, I don’t know.

In fact, the NRA supports taking guns out of the hands of criminals, and supports strict penalties for those who own or use firearms unlawfully. In Mr. Walsh’s world, we fight crime by taking guns away from law abiding citizens, by assessing civil and criminal penalties against those who defend themselves from violent criminals using deadly force, and by giving violent criminals a gentle slap on the wrist.

Mr. Walsh points out that the deranged killer in Kirkwood took the firearm from the officer he killed, and used it to kill others. Similarly, an officer in New Orleans was recently disarmed by a criminal she was attempting to arrest, and killed with her own gun. Does Mr. Walsh suggest, then, that we should even disarm police officers?

Tragedies often bring knee jerk reactions. My condolences to the families. While some will blame the tool used most know that it was the individual that was responsible. The same tool this murderer used in his crime was used to stop him. Gun free zones are killing zones. A civilian with a legally carried firearm may have been able to stop the carnage sooner. Mr. Thornton wouldn’t have targeted the armed civilian as he did the uniformed Officers because he wouldn’t have known who was armed.

See…I told you so.

— Garrison
3:20 pm February 8th, 2008

The fact is that if any of the members of the Kirkwood City Council had taken advantage of their ability to carry a concealed weapon at that meeting then there might have been fewer deaths.

Since Mr. Thornton shot the second officer as soon as he entered the room there’s really no way anyone else could have stopped him. However he could have been stopped before he began his rampage behind the table if someone had been able to throw lead rather than chairs.

Under current Missouri Law only the members of a ‘governing body’ can legally carry a concealed weapon at their meetings.

And Garrison, if guns are the cause of these shootings then why aren’t there more at:
Gun shops
Police stations
Gun shows
Military bases
and all of the other places known to have lots of guns around?

Instead it seems as if the only place we hear of these mass attacks are places that are known to be ‘gun free’.

Wait a minute…let me see if I have this right. “Why aren’t there more shootings at police stations because there’s more guns at police stations….That’s your logic? Because there’s few shootings at gun-shows and gun shops we should hang out there…That’s your logic?

You want to make the entire country a military base were everyone carries a firearm because that kind of a society will make us all safe….That’s your logic?

Simple task: Compare the number of guns in this country and the number of gun related deaths, with the same statistics of any other civilized country….Then tell me we need more guns and more armed citizens to make us safer.

— Garrison
3:43 pm February 8th, 2008

Hmmm….

Gee, it almost sounds like you can’t bring yourself to admit that the problem isn’t with the inanimate objects but with the people holding them.

I *am* looking at the statistics and they say that the more legally armed people you have in an area, the safer it tends to be.

Are you perhaps looking at the statistics that show that the more criminals you have in an area the less safe it tends to be? Or the ones showing that criminals will use guns even though it means they’re breaking even more laws? It can’t be the ones from England and Austrailia - they show gun crime going *up* right along with the gun bans.

Some people will blame inanimate objects for what happened in Kirkwood last night. The fact of the matter is a man - who was seriously deranged - took revenge on those who thought wronged him. He could have done it with a baseball bat, hammer, or car.

This man was out to get revenge - nothing was going to stop him - not having a gun would only have made him find another tool to kill with. The killer’s mother even went on record to say she WASN’T surprised he did something like this - THAT’S HIS MOTHER saying those things. Maybe someone should have gotten “Cookie” some help.

I agree with the above statements about the “Killing Zones” - Law abiding citizens follow the laws, remember - we are a nation of laws. If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns - it’s a fact. In Missouri we have some of the most constructionist gun-laws in the USA, citizens can carry guns assuming they take the necessary training and apply for the correct permits to do so. This doesn’t however allow those people (law abiding citizens remind you) to carry their weapon in to a government/public meeting…

This isn’t about putting MORE guns on the street - it’s about people taking care of their own safety and protecting themselves from crazed individuals hell-bent on hurting someone. If that means that someone gets a dog to walk with them at night - it’s a step in the right direction. Criminals will always be just that - criminals.

I guess I’m a “gun nut” by your definition. I guess that makes you an uninformed “sheeple” by mine.

Garrison, regardig your “simple task”, are you aware that the PER CAPITA murder rate in Washington DC is HIGHER than that of Iraq? Translated: you are more likley to be killed in our nations capitol than in the middle of a war zone! Statistics prove that CCW lowers violent crime and more restrictive gun laws result in more crime; When Florida passed law to allow CCW, rape, muggings and murders declined. Vermont and Alaska have virtualy zero gun laws, yet they have a lower per capita violent crime rate than New York City and Washington DC (two places with among the most restrictive gun laws). What does your “logic” say about that?

Bottom line is THE GUN ISN’T AT FAULT. Guns don’t kill people. People kill people. What if he had come in there and murdered these innocent people with a machette? What if he had aquired a large amount of high explosives and killed EVERYONE in that room?

Common sense isn’t too common these days…

I see the liberals could not wait to jump on this. The GUN is not the problem. The CRIMINAL is the problem. In this case, I feel for the cops and their families. I think also that this guy was targeted by the council. While I disagree with the venue he chose to express his disappointment in the violation of his rights as a human being and a businessman, I do believe he had the right to take these lily white innocents in the council and give them a nice big bear hug while giveing them a head butt too. They were arrogant. They did not deserve the death penalty, and he sure did not deserve to be treated the way he was. I know he went to court. I also realize the liberal judges will never give in to individual rights, but only to government “rights”. Those shot inside the council meeting could have had the right to carry, but they chose not to. It cost them their lives.

Well, looks like the gun lobby is in full force. Why stop with guns? As long as you don’t fear inanimate objects, let’s look at a few more? Nuclear weapons don’t kill people, people do. Let’s arm every country with nuclear war heads in order to make the world SAFE for democracy.

As Jim mentions above…The weapon is not the problem. The insane criminal or ruthless dictator is the propblem. Hell, if everybody owned hand grenades we wouldn’t have to worry about war at all…..

Makes about as much sense.

Hey Garrison,

Try to take them away and see how many die.

Guns are not the problem people. The fall of society is. Nobody is taught right from wrong anymore.

Mrs Garrison, does it bother you that your position of seizing all guns is the exact same position that so many dictators in history took in their quest for power? Once the populace is disarmed, they are easy to oppress.

Garrison - “(If) You want to express your sympathy cry on “Talk of the Day”. It was YOU that turned this into an argument about gun control which is NOT what this thread was about. For all your claims of being a compassioniate person, I don’t believe you really care. It’s just another opportunity to “prove” you are “right.” There is a time and place and this isn’t it. Your behavior and comments are utterly disgusting and what little respect I had for you is completely gone (not that you care).

Now I am going to go “cry” (as you sarcastically put it) on Talk of the Day. My heart breaks for the victims in this tragedy.

Garrison you sadden me. Your claim to care may fool yourself but it is not fooling anyone else. The fact of the matter is Mr. Cookie had a tactical plan. He took out the targets most likely to stop his plan of killing as many on the city council as possible. The officers that were slain were victims of surprise as well as everyone else. Instead of grieving with the victim’s family’s you make uneducated rediculous statements that have no scientific backing other than sensless dribble published by the Brady campaign. People like you make me realize that I am ultimately responsible for the safety of my family. When seconds counted the police were minutes away.

Oh and another thing if you want to live in a democracy you should move. If you do not know why ask someone whom has a higher IQ

I never said I wanted to take away all guns….That’s impossible. What is more practical is to put an end to the manufacturing, distribution, selling and trading of all hand guns. It may take decades, but eventually we will rid our society of this deadly and devasting “inanimate” object. Murder in the U.S. is a multi-billion dollar industry.

How many 8 track players are on the streets or in shop windows? The same can should be done with hand guns.

Maybe, just maybe, our grandchildren will thank us for having the wisdom to protect their families and our communities….It’s a little late for Kirkwood….and for 10,000 other communities that will suffer similar tragedies in the future.

It’s working in other countries despite the fact that the U.S. still produces over 12 million handguns a year. These guns aren’t used for hunting, they’re designed for the mere purpose of killing other human beings. The 500 million hand guns [deadly weapons] are on your streets? That’s why you feel you need a loaded gun under your pillow….Cry for the victims.

Stop the insanity.

I own several of those “only used for killing human” handguns you speak of, garrison. To this day they have killed no one.

A message to everyone else:

Garrison is the worst of the worst kooks. He makes up lies to based on his own senseless beliefs and “pushes” everyone’s buttons to evoke response. I have caught him lying and challenged him at least a dozen times and not once has he been able to back up his fraudulent claims. The best policy on him is to completely ignore the idiot in the room and he will die a painful death on this board.

Heart Disease kills more people in this country in a year than guns do in 25 years. Let’s put a ban on heart disease.
