Filing in St. Louis County off to slow start
The 8 a.m. opening bell for filing for candidates for St. Louis County Council in the Aug. 5 primary drew only one Republican and one Democrat.
County Councilman John Campisi, who represents south St. Louis County, was the Republican. He filed to run for a third term as councilman from the 6th District.
Carl Johnson of West Overland was the Democrat. He is running for council member from the 2nd District. Johnson, 75, a security guard and retired technician in AT&T’s central telephone switching office, unsuccessfully sought the party’s nomination for county executive in 2004.
Voters in November will elect council members from the 2nd, 4th and 6th districts. Council Chairman Kathleen Kelly Burkett, a Democrat, is the council member from the 2nd District, Councilman Mike O’Mara represents the 4th district.
The St. Louis County Election Board, which received the candidate filings, will hold a lottery to determine the order on the ballot of first-day filers in each race. Candidates who enter council races after today will go on the ballot in the order in which they filed. Many politicians believe that the first position on the ballot gives them an advantage.
