Nixon, White to pray with Slay foe
Jay Nixon announced today that he will be visiting a pair of African-American churches on Sunday - including one that could raise eyebrows at City Hall.
Nixon will also have a special guest with him - former Missouri Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronnie White.
Nominally, the stops are to gin up turnout for Tuesday’s presidential primary.
But, as State Sen. Maida Coleman recently suggested, Nixon may still have some fence-mending to do among black voters.
Nixon raised the ire of many local African-Americans when, in his first term as attorney general, he called for phasing out the state’s financial role in the St. Louis desegregation program.
White - the state’s first African-American supreme court judge - could help Nixon dispel any lingering mistrust.
Nixon, who will be accompanied by his wife and kids, will start the morning off at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in the Ville. Then, they’ll head to the Community Church of God in Black Jack, the same congregation Lacy Clay spoke at this past Sunday.
That’s also the same congregation led by the Rev. Douglas Parham, a leading critic of Mayor Francis Slay.
I wonder what Slay thinks of the fact that Nixon - out of all the churches holding services on Sunday - chose the one where the preacher has been most vocal about removing Slay from office.

Have you ever noticed?
Politics in ‘liberal’ (read Democratic) churches “GOOD”
Politics in ‘conservative’ (read Republican) churches “BAD”
Hmmmm…
However… if they are praying for deliverance from the Slay family… pass the plate, I’m down for it!
I continue to be amazed at the open electioneering that goes on in the pulpits of black churches. It really makes a mockery of restrictions on tax exempt status. Why is it that nobody at the IRS seems to care about this?
By day, IRS business, by night they’re communists, Nick my brother. Anyone knows that; intuitively obvious; what other explanation can there be?
I agree with Nick Kasoff’s comments about the open electioneering that occurs in the black churches. The Republican’s have definitely created a hell of an environment with all these faith based intiatives during the Bush administration. The Republicans have started a locomotive train that is hard to stop by anybody.
For example, former Senator Jim Talent started things off by initially visiting Friendly Temple Baptist Church on Martin Luther King asking for support for his campaign and later hiring the Republican Pastor’s (Michael Jones) brother of that church. Friendly Temple Baptist Church on Martin Luther King is a well known mostly black Republican church, with most of their members coming from outside of the neighborhood they converge on every Sunday. They own Martin Luther King avenue with parking lots, buildings, senior buildings, and everything else you can imagine. However, they have failed to help close the liquor store down the street or stop the prostitution that occurs outside of their church doors daily, don’t prostitutes need to be saved too!
Strange how many weekend warriors attend church in the City of St. Louis. I guess many of the pastors and members of these churches feel that they are helping the community by building parking lots, senior centers, and bookstores in commercial districts. Taking valuable space away from revenue generating businesses, and replacing it with non-for-profit status businesses that fail to produce any revenue for that community. In fact, most people can get a business loan to open up a church, but not a regular business loan. Sad.
Hell (no pun intended), church is big business now. The church leaders now own better automobiles than C.E.O.’s of major corporations, private jets, and mansions. However, we all know that there is a separation between church and state, so that must be why there is a separation between the church leader’s financial status and the financial state of the congregation they serve. The Pastor, Reverend, Bishop, etc., drives a Mercedes Benz automobile, and the poor ole tithing church member drives a less than desirable car (hoopty). Although, the church member car breaks down on a regular basis, they are never loaned the church leader’s automobile that belongs to the church (yeah right).
The churches leaders nationwide started building senior centers to keep the elderly close to the church and ensure proper tithing every Sunday from the fixed income population. They follow what has become the church leader’s doctrine; keep your friends close and your guaranteed tither’s closer!
Remember President Bush having a press conference during the Hurricane Katrina debacle using Bishop T.D. Jakes (who pastors one of the largest churches in Texas) as a witness to how great President Bush’s character was as a whole.
In fact, if Jesus Christ was to come back today and visit these churches, you could expect a new movie to be released the next week. The title of the movie would be “Jesus Gone Wild”, because he would probably go on a rampage destroying all the false representatives of his mission.
OH WELL, HIS EYE IS ON THE SPARROW, AND I KNOW HE WATCHES ME!
