Party-switcher Barr headlines Libertarian event

Bob Barr, a former Republican congressman from Georgia who’s now a Libertarian, is the headliner at the St. Louis Area Libertarian Caucus’ next meeting, scheduled for 1 p.m. on Feb. 23.

The site is the Best Western Airport Inn and Conference Center, 4530 North Lindbergh Blvd..

Barr represented Georgia’s 7th congressional district from 1995 to 2003, and was a particularly prominent Republican.  He now is a delegate to the Libertarian National Committee, “representing Georgia and neighboring states,” a release said. He also is slated to be the keynote speaker at the Libertarian Party’s 2008 Presidential Convention in Denver, May 23-26.

I read where an effort is under way to draft Barr as the Libertarian presidential candidate. I wonder if speculation about that had something to do with “Uncommitted” being he runaway winner of MO’s Libertarian presidential primary.

In reality, most Republicans are libertarians, even many coming from the “Religious Right” perspective. Kudos to Barr for having the courage to do this. It certainly isn’t going to get him any lobbying jobs.

Libertarians with a capital L are generally not social libertarians though, they only have exalted notions of property rights. I’ll give credit to Barr for his somewhat tepid antiwar stance, but that’s about it.

Ron2, your characterization of Libertarians couldn’t be more inaccurate. In fact, while Libertarians are not libertines, they are certainly social libertarians. In the preamble to their 2006 platform (link below), they state that they “seek a world of liberty; a world in which all individuals are sovereign over their own lives and no one is forced to sacrifice his or her values for the benefit of others.”

Property rights are only one of many issues addressed there: Libertarians also call for the government to stop restricting a vast array of other things, ranging from guns and religion, to abortion and sexual preference.

PS - While I am a libertarian, I am not at the moment a Libertarian. I can easily see it happening some day, though.
