Rep. Clint Zweifel announced today that he will enter the race for the Democratic nomination for state treasurer.

“I have spent my legislative career understanding how our state spends your tax dollars and working across party divisions to get things done,” Zweifel said in a written statement.

If elected treasurer, Zweifel said he would be an advocate for taxpayers, speaking out on issues such as the use of funds from the state’s student loan authority to finance a building boom on college campuses.

He said Treasurer Sarah Steelman “should have issued an independent actuarial analysis to tell us how students would be affected” by the move.

Zweifel, D-Florissant, was first elected to the House in 2002. He has often served as the House Democrats’ voice on tax policy.

In the August primary, Zweifel is likely to face Mark Powell, who was the Democratic nominee for treasurer in 2004. Steelman, a Republican, plans to run for governor.

UPDATE: The Democratic race is at least a three-way one: In addition to Powell and Zweifel, Andria Danine Simckes of St. Louis filed for the race Tuesday. On the GOP side: Sen. Brad Lager of Savannah was the only early filer.

You neglected to mention Andria Simckes, an African American CPA from St Louis County, as a likely primary opponent. She announced for Treasurer back in December. It is noteworthy that Zweifel mentioned working across “party” divisions, but not racial divisions. He comes from north county, where Democrats have been especially reluctant to share power with African American candidates.

Zweifel is the research and education director for Teamsters Local 688. Yet for some reason, he makes no mention of this in either of his biographical write-ups on his website. He also fails to mention this in his official bio on the house website. Perhaps this is because it wouldn’t look good for a guy who claims to “work across party divisions” to be in the employee of one of the most partisan organizations in America, organized labor.

Of the Democrats running for state Treasurer only one has accounting and banking experience. I would prefer to have someone that has experience with accounting and banking handle the states money compared to someone that has no experience in these fields. My vote will stay with Mark Powell

Andria Danine Simckes is not a CPA, she is a lawyer with no banking or true investment experience. Check out her website for the facts. She is a democrat insider, as is Clint Zweifel. Mark Powell has to obligations or allegiances to any lobby groups or special interst groups.

I served with Mark Powell on the Arnold City Council for eight years. Every action he took was for the residents he represented. His background in finances took us through some rough times. I believe he is the best person possible for Treasurer of the State of Missouri.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Clint for many years and I know and supported his elections in the past. As a Republican, Clint is the only Democrat I have voted for ever. Those who know him will find he is a very intelligent and more so concerned for the average Joe than most politicians.

This guy is the real deal and I will be one of his supporters again this election cycle.
