UPDATED –A new face in the 15th; Kirkwood activist files for state Senate

Steve Eagleton, one of the co-chairs of “Kirkwood Citizens Coming Together for a Brighter Future,” has filed for the state Senate in the 15th District.

Eagleton and the group had been among the critics of the City Council’s decision to go ahead with the April municipal election, in the wake of the tragic Feb. 7 shootings in the chamber that left six people dead, including the assailant. Two council members, the head of a city department and two police officers were killed.

Eagleton filed late Tuesday afternoon as a Democrat.

So far, only one Republican has filed — Glendale Alderman Eric Schmitt, who is rumored to be the favored choice of the GOP for the seat, which will be vacated by state Senate President Michael Gibbons, R-Kirkwood. He’s term-limited, and is running for Missouri attorney general.

Which prompts a question in Democratic circles: What’s the situation with Kevin Gunn?

Gunn, also a Democrat, has not filed as of yet. He previously had announced for the post and has raised a considerable sum of campaign money. His last report showed him with just under $165,000 in the bank.

As previous Fix readers are aware, Gunn has been rumored to be under consideration for an appointment by Gov. Matt Blunt to the Public Service Commission.

That pick was the talk of Democrat Days, where some Democratic members of the state Senate said privately that Gunn’s nomination would be filibustered if it came about. Gunn has not commented, nor has Blunt’s staff.

Eagleton, 46, is the nephew of the late Sen. Thomas F. Eagleton. (Steve Eagleton’s father, the late Dr. Mark Eagleton, was the senator’s brother.)

Here’s the statement that Steve Eagleton’s campaign just sent out:

“Today, with encouragement from Democrats in the 15th Senate District and across the state, Steve Eagleton announced his candidacy for the Missouri Senate. Eagleton, an attorney and real-estate developer, lives in Kirkwood with his wife Moranda….”

” ‘Across St. Louis County and Missouri, families are struggling with the skyrocketing cost of healthcare, college tuition, and a lagging economy. Unfortunately, our state’s Republican leadership too often continues to embrace policies that take our state backwards,’ ” Eagleton said in the statement.

“ ‘I am running for State Senate because I know Missouri can do better. We must fix the healthcare crisis, keep college affordable for every family, and support life saving stem-cell research and the world-class jobs it brings.

“ ‘I am also running because I aspire to the courage, conviction, and selflessness that we remember from our state’s finest men and woman. I grew up in the shadow of these men, such as former Sen. John Danforth and my late uncle, former Sen. Tom Eagleton. They taught me well the approach of a statesman, fighting for the people rather than for special interests.”

“I’m running for the Missouri Senate; in doing so I make a commitment to the voters of the 15th Senate District. I commit to help lead our state forward. I commit to offering new ideas, expanding healthcare for every Missourian, and demanding better results from state government. Together, we can rein in the special interests that dominate the political process and return accountability to our government.”

Not even the Dems would be dumb enough to filibuster a nomination of another Democrat. How stupid. That must be the collective braintrust of Chuck Grahm and his cronies. For them to even suggest it would probably make Gunn or any others to look for another job. Who would want to be associated with something like that? They are morons. No wonder they are in the minority.

Eagleton is a great recruit. Democrats are getting a 2 for 1 deal. They will still win the 15th and get a good Dem on the PSC.

Republicans may regret the appointment of Gunn if he takes it. Eric Schmitt is a weak candidate who was recruited specifically to oppose Gunn. With Gunn out of the race and Eagleton in, they don’t get the free pass that they were expecting, so they are going to have to use as many resources as before with no guaranteed win

I think we got lucky on this one…the fact that the Dems are thinking about filibustering means they think Eagelton is second tier. Go for it!

Why didn’t he run for mayor since the all the activists can’t find anyone to fun in Kirkwood - it’s all Democrats that oppose the current candidate and of course want the election postponed.

Who cares if they filibuster Gunn? Who is he to the Democrats anyway? He runs for state senate for several months preventing others from getting in, drops out, wants a lame appointment instead….then gets replaced with an Eagleton. Sounds like a loser to me…

loser - you are a moron…no clue as to the importance or potential of the PSC, no clue as to how good Eagleton is as a candidate and no clue to even give yourself a good name.

Where did this Steve Eagleton come from? I hear he just moved here from the Atlanta area. Did he come to St. Louis just to bank on his uncle’s prestigious name?

I’d say he is quite low-profile…not much on the net about him or his business interests?

Maybe KC Star would know more about his bio and history.

After hearing Morgan’s presentation, as well as one by Dot Kelly, preservation chair of the KCWR, developer Steve Eagleton of Atlanta, Ga., requested council members postpone their vote on the zoning application.

“Under these circumstances, I don’t want anybody to think that we want to go up there and totally destroy this fort,” Eagleton said. He requested more time to see if a compromise could be reached between him and the other parties, including the KCWR.

Steve Eagleton, an Atlanta-based developer who plans to build condominiums on the land, said he would be willing to donate some of the land for preservation, as long as he is able to build condos at the top of the ridge.

Eric Schmitt is the best candidate to me. His stance on certain issues (property tax reform, healthcare, and the growth of our economy) and his presence is something the 15th will need. He raised $125,000 alone in the 1st quarter. He is definitely an upstanding person that is perfect for this seat. A very knowledgeable and young candidate that has the potential to make a change in Jefferson City.

If he’s a developer out of ATLANTA, why is he running for office in ST LOUIS? Just out of curiosity, I checked online for both lawyers and residences under Steve Eagleton. No listing under either category. Starting to wonder if he’s a charlatan.

Actually, he resided in Sandy Springs, GA…an upscale community, Atlanta suburb…but he does appear to be somewhat of a charlatan…reports say he is a very distant relative of Tom Eagleton.

Everyone who donated to Gunn’s campaign should have their money refunded. It’s a disgrace that he sold out to Governor Matt Blunt . Folks that is exactly what Kevin Gunn did.

Shame on him

Happy St. Paddy’s

If the ubiquitous Mr Steve Eagleton wants to step up to the plate and take a swing at the 15th senate district, so be it. I don’t see anyone else rushing to file now that Gunn has flown the coupe. Let’s just hope Eagleton didn’t have anything to do with encouraging Mr Gunn’s exist. And Mr Eagleton will definitely need to clarify some of the comments he made on KMOX and several tv stations where he said some rude and insensitive things about the town of Kirkwood and its’ council and city attorneys. Insulting these Kirkwood officials can’t help kick off a campaign race, especially when the town he’s criticizing lays in the heart of the 15th senate district. He probably needs to kick his campaign off with an great big sincere apology and clear the air first thing. It’s the media that has repeatedly referred to him as a lawyer and they’re the experts, right? The reporters are the ones who check these guys out when they interview and quote them, right? So media people, what kind of law does he practice? and what law school did he go to? What community involvement has he had that lets voters in the 15th know who he is and why we should trust him. Is he a member of the Lions Club? Kiwanis Club? PTA? YMCA? the community pool for goodness sake? Just something besides the newly formed Bright Future for Kirkwood Club, please? The papers don’t refer to him as a real estate developer but they definitely call him “an attorney” or “lawyer from Kirkwood”. Is his law practice within the city of Kirkwood or does he actually live in the city of Kirkwood? What’s his record and can he do this job? His answer needs to be more than “growing up in the shadow of Senator Danforth & Senator Eagleton” though that’s a good start. The apology needs to come now and then the race.

Eagleton has no chance. I hope Gunn will refund the $$ I gave him so I can give it to Schmitt. And they wonder why people are skeptical and jaundiced.
