Akin makes it official, files for fifth term
Despite a flock of Democrats vying to replace him in November, U.S. Rep. Todd Akin showed he was in no rush to make his re-election bid official.
Akin was in Jefferson City this morning - six days after filing opened for the August primary - putting his name on the ballot for a 5th term.
Though Akin’s job security appears to be firmly intact, that has not prevented a crop of Democrats from seeking to run against him in the fall.
Five Democrats entered the race on the first day of filing. To local news consumers, the most recognizable name of the bunch is serial candidate Bill Haas. After four campaigns for mayor, Haas is making his second bid for Congress.
Another veteran of City Hall politics in the race is former St. Louis Alderman David L. Pentland.
But, unlike Haas, Pentland actually lives in the Second District - which stretches from Kirkwood to Lincoln County.
While Pentland moved from the city’s 25th Ward to Warson Woods, Haas, a Central West Ender, is benefiting from the law that requires congressional candidates to live only in the state they want to represent - and not necessarily the district.
Akin: Filed for a fifth term

You make it sound like “benefiting from the law that requires congressional candidates to live only in the state they want to represent - and not necessarily the district” is sneaking through some kind of loophole. That obscure little loophole is the US Constitution.
Living in the district - or not - is a valid issue for constituents to weigh and consider, but it’s not a prerequisite.
This “loophole” may get a more understanding review from the press after redistricting in 2011. If MO loses a congressional seat as currently forecast, a logical expansion of the current 1st District would put all 3 St Louis area congressmen in it. I don’t think anyone would hoot and holler about Carnahan and/or Akin being carpetbaggers for running in the neighboring district that included lots of their current (then former) turf.
“That obscure little loophole is the US Constitution.” Oracle, it’s people like you that make this blog worth reading!
Did I miss something in Jake’s report? How does “benefiting from the law” imply someone is “sneaking through a loophole?” How about “taking advantage of the law”…no, that sounds like he’s stealing something….How about ” using a law which only”….no, that sounds like he’s using people….How about “gaining from a law which”…no, that sounds like he’s seeking political gain…..
Oh, well ….Oracle, you come up with something prophetic. Nick will enjoy reading it.
Congressman Todd Akin, Republican-Plaza Frontenac meets the qualification for running for office as he so adroitly represents the super-rich, mostly male, mostly pale, and always stale miniscule minority who run our beloved country as their private preserve. It would be a terrific loss to the 2nd District if Mr. Akin would be fired in the next election(as his good friend and country club pal, Jim Talent, was in 2006). I mean, who would take up the all-important cause of protecting the Pledge of Allegiance, which was Mr. Akin’s claim to “fame” during his previous four terms. I hope he wins re-election–maybe he could put his considerable talents(pardon the pun, Jim!) to work by writing legislation to protect apple pie and motherhood, thus giving him the trifecta!
Seriously, folks–this man has done nothing but shill for the US Chamber of Commerce since he took office eight years ago. He has consistently voted against raising the minimum wage, increasing health care coverage, workers’ rights, etc. He is big on being “pro-life” but unfortunately, he is against life when it emerges from the womb! What would Jesus do? I doubt He would side with the super-rich and super-powerful like Mr. Akin has done so consistently since he began being a politician. Wake up, America!
Give it a rest, Lizz. Akin represents west St. Louis county and St. Charles, which is a white, affluent district. Would he be a faithful representative of his constituents if he was voting with Congressman Clay?
Garrison you said it perfectly. Haas is doing ALL of the above- Using, Taking Advantage and Gaining. That sums him up to a tee.I wonder what stunt of publicity he is going to try this time?
Billy Haas is the hugest opportunistic pig out there and lives in the city and wants to represent the county folks where he has never lived. Plain stupidity. Huh
How can someone as “poor as a church mouse” have the funds to successfully campaign for himself. Why doesn’t he run in his own district. Fishy!
Vote for me or I’m going to starve myself, boo hoo.
Dr. Phil could straighten him out, maybe.
