Aldermen head to Jeff City for elusive police hearing

A State House hearing on a bill that would establish local control of the St. Louis Police Department seems ready to go for 2 p.m. today.

Seriously.

The hearing has already been postponed twice - once because of an apparent committee mix-up, and again because of weather.

But with a balmy day outside, a group of city aldermen including Sam Moore, Jeffrey Boyd, Frank Williamson and April Ford Griffin were heading out the front entrance of City Hall this morning, on the way to a van that will take them to Jeff City.

In addition to aldermen, Mayor Francis Slay is also expected to testify at today’s hearing.

City officials have been pining to get rid of the state-appointed Police Board since its inception during the Civil War period. If they can pull it off this year, I’m sure they won’t mind the delays.
