Blunt gets hit with $15,000 fine, told to pay back $101,000 in donations

The Missouri Ethics Commission issued a detailed decision this afternoon, in which it laid out the particulars of the $15,000 fine imposed against Gov. Matt Blunt’s 2004 campaign for governor.

The decision also told his campaign to pay back, within 10 days, $101,060 in overlimit contributions it collected in connection with that 2004 contest.

Former commission executive director Bob Connor, who is staying on as an adviser to interim director Stacey Heislen,  consultant, said that the overlimit contributions were the result of people giving money to Blunt’s debt service fund after the election, when they’d already contributed up to the limit during the 2004 campaign.

Blunt’s campaign has not acknowledged any wrong-doing, but has agreed to pay the $15,000, which stems from the campaign’s use of an RV borrowed from a campaign supporter, Mike Kehoe.

Payments for use of the van weren’t made until 2005.

The complaints that led to the ruling had been filed by the Missouri Democratic Party.

Blunt’s campaign disagrees with the commission’s ruling, with a spokesman saying last week that the fine was paid just to end the dispute.

If they were correct in disagreeing with findings, Blunt’s campaign would not have paid anything back.

With regards to baby Blunt, this situation and the way he handled it is NO surprise to me. Another small parcel that contributed to the whole–his decision NOT to run for re-election. He did have enough sense to know that he would be throwed out of office IF he ran for another term.

Not true, BH. Sometimes it just ain’t worth the bother. I paid $40 in city earnings tax in ‘06. They claim I never filed or paid. My bank doesn’t return canceled checks, so it would be more of a pain than it is worth to prove them wrong. So I am just paying again.

Robb(D), we can disagree about whether Governor Blunt has been good or bad, but there’s one thing you can’t possible dispute: He’s been a much better governor than Blagojevich.

Except when you are in the public light, you should not pay fines to just make it go away. A public figure, political, no less should stand by their decision of no wrongdoing–then don’t pay any fines.

#5, He’s a politician that probably already has his next lucrative position lined up. He is used to spending other people’s money and the 15 gs will come from donors, probably license office controllers. It’s better to pay the fine, get it over with, and prepare for his next career.

Robb, I still see you seething with jealousy over Blunt. Why else would you consistently look for a way to belittle him by calling a 36 year old man a baby? I’m 34 and carry a great deal of responsibility in my position, but alas I’m just a baby, so I can’t possibly do a good job.
