Bud select: Oxford backs state beer designation

Should Bud be the official Show-Me suds?

One person who thinks so is State Rep. Jeanette Mott Oxford, who has signed on as a co-sponsor to a bill that would make Budweiser the official state beer.

Though Anheuser-Busch’s prolific campaign spending has helped the company make many friends in Jefferson City, it’s likely that Oxford’s support comes from another source: Oxford’s district includes AB’s Pestalozzi Street headquarters.

What’s more is that Oxford’s Benton Park home is just a keg toss away from the Brewery - she can probably smell the hops from her front door.

Oxford is the only city legislator to co-sponsor the measure, which, inexplicably, fell to a Kansas City lawmaker, Curt Dougherty, to introduce.

Two St. Charles County reps — Doug Funderburk and Vicki Schneider - have attached their name to the bill, as has Bruce Darrough, of Florissant.

If the bill reaches committee, it should be an interesting hearing - will they pass out free samples?

Also, if the state’s two main microbrews - Boulevard Brewing in K.C. And Schlafly in Midtown - have any lobbying pull, now is the time: What a coup it would be for them to steal the beer title in the Budweiser state.

Budweiser

Make it official? Bud could be the Show-Me lager

This is even worse than selling naming rights to a stadium.

Since when does a state government endorse a beverage brand?

I have no objection to having beer named our state beverage, but why specify a brand? Besides, there are other brands made here in Missouri that taste better than Buweiser.

Bad kitty! Bad kitty! Doesn’t Rep Dougherty realize that AB paid BIG…..VERY BIG BUCKS to be called the “Offical International Beer” of the Beijing Olympics? Missouri has more than one great brewery and let’s NOT use taxpayer’s money to promote one of them just because they are the biggest. I know they’re good but this is ridiculous. It almost sounds like a fundraising ploy. Nah.

I agree this should not be about a certain brand.

State Animal = Missouri Mule
State Insect = Honey Bee

STATE BEVERAGE = BEER

Otherwise the Mojito lobby will beat us to it!!!
