Bud select: Oxford backs state beer designation
Jake Wagman
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Should Bud be the official Show-Me suds?

One person who thinks so is State Rep. Jeanette Mott Oxford, who has signed on as a co-sponsor to a bill that would make Budweiser the official state beer.

Though Anheuser-Busch’s prolific campaign spending has helped the company make many friends in Jefferson City, it’s likely that Oxford’s support comes from another source: Oxford’s district includes AB’s Pestalozzi Street headquarters.

What’s more is that Oxford’s Benton Park home is just a keg toss away from the Brewery - she can probably smell the hops from her front door.

Oxford is the only city legislator to co-sponsor the measure, which, inexplicably, fell to a Kansas City lawmaker, Curt Dougherty, to introduce.

Two St. Charles County reps — Doug Funderburk and Vicki Schneider - have attached their name to the bill, as has Bruce Darrough, of Florissant.

If the bill reaches committee, it should be an interesting hearing - will they pass out free samples?

Also, if the state’s two main microbrews - Boulevard Brewing in K.C. And Schlafly in Midtown - have any lobbying pull, now is the time: What a coup it would be for them to steal the beer title in the Budweiser state.

Make it official? Bud could be the Show-Me lager
