Gunn won’t face Senate backlash

Senate Democrats apparently won’t try to block the nomination of Democrat Kevin Gunn to the Public Service Commission.

Senators have been upset with Gunn because he was going to be their star candidate in the race to succeed Sen. Mike Gibbons, R-Kirkwood.

But Gov. Matt Blunt got Gunn to forget the race in favor of a Public Service Commission appointment, which was announced today.

“We had a great candidate,” said the Democrats’ chief recruiter, Sen. Jeff Smith, D-St. Louis. “Then we had no candidate.”

That changed this week when Democrat Steve Eagleton filed to run for Gibbons’ 15th District seat.

Says Smith: “We were able to recruit a spectacular candidate. Now I feel very good about it.”

So he’s ready to move on.

Smith dismissed talk that Senate Democrats might try to filibuster Gunn’s appointment. Smith said he understands Gunn’s reasons for accepting the $102,000-a-year state job.

“I don’t think he did it for the money,” Smith said. “He’s very interested in the public policy he could help shape in those areas.”

Smith didn’t anticipate that Democrats would try to derail a bill by Senate Majority Leader Charlie Shields that would repeal the requirement that commissioners live within 40 miles of the capital.

But Smith hopes Gunn remembers how Senate Democrats helped him raise the $164,000 remaining in his campaign treasury.

“Kevin is interested in doing anything he can to make sure we win that seat,” Smith said. “I’m hoping we can find a way for at least some of the money to benefit Steve” Eagleton, who is getting a late start on the race.

Not that name recognition will be a big problem for Eagleton, an attorney and real estate developer. He is the nephew of the late U.S. Sen. Tom Eagleton.

FINALLY! Some sensible talk from the Senate Dems. Smart move. Both Gunn and Eagelton could win the seat.

Gunn says he wants to set policy on the PSC. Is he kidding or doesn’t he understand what the PSC does?

Gunn says he wants to set energy policy at the PSC. Is he kidding, or does he not understand the job?

Margaret - The PSC can definately help shape energy policy in the way it allows for rates of return, in promoting the use of renewable energies, writing rules that implement legislation, so maybe you are unclear as to what a really influential body the PSC is.

Info is now out that Steve Eagleton doesn’t meet the “qualified Missouri voter for 3 years prior” to filing requirements for the 15th senate district. Furthermore he’s not even a licensed lawyer/attorney but a real estate developer from the Atlanta Georgia area. Mr Gunn & Mr Smith should have researched this guy before going forward. The name “egaleton” blinded their brains into wishful thinking mode. The republicans already know this and are just waiting until after the august primary to drop d’bomb. They are wispering their guy Eric Schmidt will be the only name on the november ballot after eagleton is disqualified. so thanks alot Jeff Smith and Kevin Gunn you guys have really fixed this!

Reeves - sounds like you have been doing some research. Eagleton has been in Kirkwood for some time now. I’m sure if he didn’t meet the minimal prerequisites he would not have been allowed to enter this election. So get accustomed to his running here; he is here to stay. He has maintained a residence in Missouri for some years and inherited some properties making him meet any qualifications of a residency standard set.

Yes, Stephen Eagleton has an address that dates back to 5/25/2003 on Delmar Blvd. So put that in your pipe and smoke it.

why doesn’t he have to pay any real estate or personal property taxes? and if he’s been voting in other state does that make him a resident of which state?

High-profile people and others can request their tax information to be removed from the internet site. That’s why nothing can be found on the county site. Also, most high-powered people have their homes and properties held in trusts and it would only show up under their trust-created name. No way of you knowing that name. And their cars, if leased would not show up under their name either. Cars could be registered in Illinois or Georgia for reasons I don’t need to point out.

The city site you don’t even have access to their information, unless you are that person. Delmar is in the city not the county.

Eagleton owns properties outside St. Louis County but within the Missouri statelines. He has held a residence on 7___ Delmar since 2003 so he is in fact a Missouri eligible voter for a period exceeding the 3 year min. Delmar is indeed in the City.
