Kinder’s latest “acting” gig gets mundane start

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

When Gov. Matt Blunt last went out of town, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder joked about the plum positions he would dole out during his temporary promotion.

But now that Blunt is once more away from Jefferson City, and Kinder again acting governor, his actual appointments are far more mundane.

Propane Commission, anyone?

Blunt left for China yesterday, part of a trade delegation that includes Claire McCaskill, Kit Bond, County Executive Charlie Dooley and Mayor Francis Slay.

As part of his proxy duties, Kinder today announced Blunt’s appointments to various boards and commissions. If you’re looking for the grist of everyday state government, this is it.

The highlights, such as they are: Mound City Mayor David Duncan to the Workforce Investment Board and Terry L. Ramsey, who operates the Bushwhacker Museum in Nevada, Mo., to the State Historical Records Advisory Board.

And, yes, Dennis L. Carroll of Independence has been awarded a three-year term on the Missouri Propane Gas Commission.

Does anyone know who is filing against Jason Crowell tomorrow? I heard that it is Lloyd Smith but I can’t confirm it.

Jake,

Do you get your jolly’s out of shitty reporting? You have be an ass to Lt. Gov Kinder for no apparent reason? Why don’t you write a positive about how he is helping with the flooding or generating TWENTY TWO MILLION dollars for the state by sponsoring the bike race?

Would that be to much to ask?

Jake:

Just for reference, it has taken more than three years to make the Missouri Propane Gas Commission a reality. This body is taking over propane inspections that formerly were the responsibility of the Department of Agriculture. Missouri ranks among the nation’s leaders in propane consumption; about 13% of the state’s families rely on propane to provide heat, hot water, cooking and clothes drying. This is a serious and responsible position with obvious public safety implications.

This may not be important in St. Louis, but that’s no reason to sneer. While these appointments might be a punch-line in your estimation, they are really quite important in the scheme of things. It is telling that you use a frivolous political framework to diminish the importance of the men and women who volunteer to implement governmental policy on behalf of Missouri’s citizens.

Mundane? Perhaps. Unimportant? Hardly. Something to be ridiculed? You should be ashamed.

Steve,

Though I try never to come across as snarky, I’m not always successful. Thanks for telling our readers more about the commission’s work.

Cheers…

Wow. These Kinder freaks don’t have much of a sense of humor.
What a bunch of idiots.
Wagman’s post wasn’t offensive in the least. Ahrens and Imanass need a life. Maybe they could put on some tight shorts and go biking together to let some of the stress go.

Ms. Ramsay has been doing a wonderful job interpreting the history of the Missouri western border Civil War (anyone else here know about Order No. 11?) as well as the local history of Nevada, Missouri and Vernon County, largely on a shoestring. This museum used to be in the old jail, which is in poor condition and in need of restoration. When I was there last fall, the museum was in the basement of the local library, largely as a conservation measure– the library is climate controlled, whereas the jail isn’t. http://www.bushwhacker.org/ They are still working on getting funding to restore the jail to period conditions.

The Museum, located very close to the courthouse square, has done much for the local community, and has a very inclusive outreach program to the kids of Nevada. With the state on the verge of Civil War sesquicentennial whoopla (starting this year!) I don’t think she needs to be picked on, either.

I know this sounds like defending an earmark. I’m not from Vernon County, though I’ve been to the museum twice now. Suggest it as a stop off for people traveling in the area. If this appointment gets the museum a bit more attention and a few more visitors…well– it’s a good thing, and about as apolitical as anything out there.

As for Kinder– I don’t give an ant’s patootie about his exercising his “power”. But what are Blunt et al doing in China anyway? Courting Wal-Mart?
