Many races uncontested as deadline nears
Tomorrow could be Election Day for more than one-third of the members of the Missouri House.
So far, about 60 of the 163 House races feature only one candidate, according to the list on file with the Secretary of State’s office.
Filing ends at 5 p.m. Tuesday, so if there’s no stampede in the next 25 hours, those contests will be all but over.
Competition is a little healthier on the Senate side, where only four of the 34 races are uncontested so far.
The lack of challenges comes despite a legislative pay raise slated to take effect next year, the first boost since 2004. Under a recommendation of the state’s Commission on Compensation, the annual salary for a part-time legislator’s job is expected to rise to $35,915, up from $31,351.
