Missouri GOP caucuses on Saturday — Ron Paul’s last stand?

Saturday morning (times vary slightly depending on the site), Republicans from around the state will gather at various locations to select delegates.

The voting is the first step in a multi-tier process to select the delegates and the alternates who will get to go to the GOP presidential convention next summer in Minneapolis.

ALL of the delegates from Missouri will be committed to presumptive GOP nominee John McCain, who won the state party’s primary on Feb. 5.

On the Republican side, Missouri is a winner-take-all state, so no other Republican captured any of the 58 delegates at stake. (The Republican Party also doesn’t have any “super delegates,” as do the Democrats, so there are no big-name free agents to worry about.)

So Saturday’s sessions will focus solely on who those delegates will be. After the delegate-selection process is completed later this spring, the GOP committed delegates are expected to include many of the party’s big names, as well as rank-and-file activists.

In any event, there are rumors afoot that some Ron Paul loyalists plan to show up at some of Saturday’s GOP caucuses and to see if some of their own can be elected delegates. It’s unclear what their aim is, since the delegates MUST back McCain.

Nick,

I keep on looking for a story on this on the MSM and nothing - if it hasn’t been covered by now it probably won’t be unless it happens again. At this point, from the movement’s perspective it is better it not be covered.

Berks,

Don’t worry, Ron Paul supporters will also be running for “Governor’s race, other statewide offices, House of Representatives and various Senators” we’ll get our people in the ballot and hope to get the same support as all the candidates from the GOP.

I love how people are so quick to assume that this campaign was a one-shot deal and that we’re all going to give up once it’s over. I’m sure that’s true for some, just like it’s true for many Obama, Hillary, and McCain supporters. Do you really think that every supporter of all the other candidates are long-term active campaigners? Hell no. They come out of the woodwork in election years, then crawl back into their holes when it’s over. There will be many RP supporters who will do the same.

Just don’t treat us like we’re some strange blip on the radar. This goes so far beyond Ron Paul. This is indeed a revolution. I support the ideals of the campaign, not just the candidate.

Erik,

Completely agree with you. I’ve always spoused the ideals of the revolution, Ron Paul is just a person that is verbalizing them in a presidential platform. Now folks, realize that every Ron Paul supporter does not agree 100% with him on every issue, but the principles he spouses I think we can all agree on.

On a side note, coverage from Saturday’s caucus is starting to hit

I’m surprised that the contents of this comment page haven’t been turned into an article on this site…..

I just wish it would get coverage on something other than blogs. Yeah, blogs are great, but some mainstream news would be nice, for a change.

I’m asking all the Ron Paul people who were at Saturday’s caucuses, esp those who organized the take-overs, to call me ASAP at 314-340-8334.

John McCain is ineligible to be president.. After looking at the FED and the problems today and the theft and bail out of Wall Street banks.. Paul is the only candidate that can help America. The other solution is central planning socialism. You might ever argue that using the FBI for political gain (Spitzer) is fascist.

Jo Mannies, if you use words like “takeover”, you will probably have a hard time getting people to call you since it sounds hostile. We didn’t “take over” - republicans voted and selected a slate of people that spouse conservative ideals, particularly those of Dr. Ron Paul. Now that kind of phrasing might get you a better response.

If you want an almost immediate response, go to http://www.dailypaul.com There are many posts of people that attended the caucus there - you can even contact individual members once you sign up. There’s lot’s of posts with the details I think you seek.

I have enjoyed the comments of this article. I would suggest you rename it, or create a new article titled “Ron Paul’s First Stand!”

Peace

It took me maybe 30 minutes total of minimal, out-of-my way time and effort to discover Ron Paul, register to vote, and vote for him in my state’s primary. I am absolutely flabbergasted, in a good way, as to how little it took on my part to do the best possible thing for myself, others in this country, and others around the world with just my vote in the primary — and later in the ‘08 general election.

I thank all other blog-posting Paul supporters for relaying their efforts and information that give us behind-the-scenes-and-unreported updates about Paul’s peformance as a candidate around the country.

To everybody:

You either like the way things are now, or you don’t.

If you DON’T like the way things are in this country, and want better, vote for Ron Paul. If you’re happy with things as is, vote for anyone else.

You don’t know what their aim is? That’s pretty sad. Did you, a reporter, talk to any of them. I mean come on, try a little bit.

Their aim is to topple the neocon stranglehold on this country through their united participation. The caucus system works for those who use it and it ignores those who do not. Perfect.
Go Delegates! There is more to the national convention than nominating the next emperor. Delegates at the convention vote on party rules, platform and resolutions. The only way to win is from within.
