PSC appointment moves forward

Kevin Gunn’s appointment as a utility regulator advanced a step this morning despite lingering resentment from Senate Democrats.

Gunn’s nomination to the Public Service Commission won approval from the Senate Gubernatorial Appointments Committee on a 6-3 vote. The full Senate must still approve the appointment.

Democrats are mad because Gunn was their star candidate in the 15th District race to succeed Sen. Mike Gibbons, R-Kirkwood.

Republicans one-upped the Democrats when Gov. Matt Blunt persuaded Gunn to drop out of the race to take the plum PSC appointment. The job, which involves setting utility rates and policies, pays about $100,000 a year, compared to about $35,000 a year for the Senate post.

Senate Minority Leader Maida Coleman, D-St. Louis, and two other Democrats voted against Gunn’s appointment in committee. Coleman said she was reflecting the concerns of her Democratic constituents and colleagues.

“This was an obvious political appointment to get Kevin Gunn out of the Senate race,” she said. “Folks are insulted by how blatant it is and want to express their displeasure with him. People feel like he’s betrayed the Democratic Party.”

Other Democrats opposing Gunn were Sens. Chuck Graham of Columbia and Victor Callahan of Independence. One Democrat — Ryan McKenna of Crystal City — joined Republicans in supporting Gunn.

Gunn, an attorney, said after the vote that he had accepted the governor’s offer because “energy policy is going to be the most interesting policy area that affects all Missourians.”

If confirmed, he said he will get an apartment in the capital to comply with residency requirements. He said he will decide later whether to move his family to Jefferson City.

Gunn might get this appointment, but his future in Democratic politics in this state is over.

Gunn is done.

Lighten up Stldem. Maybe Kevin can do some good over there in the Public Utilities domaine. And dems in the 15th have two impressive candidates to boot. Gunn needs to reurn his donations though, since there’s a contested primary. And doesn’t that increase the limits for this race as a side benefit?

Return his donations….sorry about the typo

Eagleton is NOT an impressive replacement, especially if your comparing him to Gunn. Compared to Eric Schimdt, he may be viable, but both are lacking what I would like to see in a person writing laws for me. However I would be satisfied with Trout if he were to win, but he wont.

Eagleton NOT an impressive replacement? Oh sorry, I guess no Carnahans or Danforths were available.

Beyond that, the consensus is that Gunn was a disappointment of a candidate who was doomed to failure. He was unimpressive when it came to public speaking and inept at anything outside of fundraising.

Eagleton’s recruitment was a coup for the Democrats and trumps Gunn’s initial recruitment.

Ooo lala “disement” I’m choquer. Danforths are republicans, so we didn’t ask if one was available being the democratic primary and all. But your comments on Gunn are rather rude, not called for and furthermore not true. Having two candidates in this primary increases the donation limits and gives us time to get to know our two guys. The only thing Gunn should do is return as many donations as he can. Eagleton has a great family name but so does Trout. Both these guys will be gentlemen and I for one look forward to figuring out their differences. The 15th Senate Democratic Primary will be the classiest race in the county as opposed to the republican’s 7th District Senate race which could be the scariest.

Disement, I’m not knocking Eagleton, he just wont recieve my vote. I think Trout is the best candidate in the race, PERIOD. Trout will. As for the Carnahans, Robin is the only one who impresses me, and the Danforth’s only one has been in public office (I may be wrong about that but I’m pretty sure I’m not). to me its less about family name and more about what you bring to the table. I lookl at who I would want representing me for the position I will be voting on ( i vote for democrats as well as republicans). I can tell you one thing if Koster is the democratic nominee, I will be pulling the lever for GIbbons.
