Race, Wright or Wrong

In Illinois, political observers are probably already familiar with the topic of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the former and sometimes incendiary pastor of Sen. Barack Obama’s church in Chicago.

Wright continues to be back in the news, and has resurfaced this week as an epilogue to the back-and-forth about race and Obama’s campaign. This has, of course, been fueled by comments from Geraldine Ferraro, a surrogate for Sen. Hillary Clinton.

I’ve posted a roundup of political analysis over at DC Download, and then opened it up for comments and thoughts. This one is about robust, but CIVIL, debate. Head here and share your thoughts.

All of you readers please click on this link or cut and paste (http://www.tucc.org/about.htm) to the site of Trinity United Church of Christ website and see what they’re about. Minister Wright Jr., Barack Obama’s ’spiritual leader’, and the church the Obama’s belong to is racist.

Sorry to tell you, #1, but it’s too late for anyone (except for superdelegates) in Illinois or Missouri to choose Hillary over Obama.

As far as the pastor, I heard clips on MJ this morning, and it was as offensive as can be. ABC news has a story, with clips, here:

http://www.abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4443230

Obama has attended this church for 20 years. He was married by him, and his kids were baptized by him.

What if John McCain had been attending a white supremacist church for the past 20 years? He would be savaged by the press. Republicans have been driven from office for much less.

If anything, this controversy will turn the superdelegates to Hillary. They won’t want this to become a massive national story reflecting on the Democratic Party.

One thing I’m interested in. I’d be curious to know what ohn Edwards thinks today. Had this story broken a lot earlier he would have reaped the benefit. A strong portion of the Obama vote is anti-Hillary. I must imagine that a decent percentage, having heard this, would love to flip their vote now.

Kasoff has a very good point. If this were any other candidate we’d be talking about the death of their campaign. Any Republican would have dropped out today. Other Democrats would have tried to weather the storm and dropped out after a few days. Obama shouldn’t be a viable candidate anymore. Taking from G Ferraro for a moment, he wouldn’t be viable if he were white. Racism does go both ways.

I find it amusing how the MSM pundits are spinning this simply as a guilty by association problem. That is a lie! If you read any of Obama’s books or books about him, for over 20 years Rev. Wright has been Obama’s close friend and advisor. That is a big difference than some random endorsement from perhaps a wack-job Evangelical paster who calls Catholics a cult and the candidate does not go to the man’s church. This guy is very, very close to Obama and Obama chose his church. And don’t forget that Oprah also belongs to this church - so what does that tell you about her.

No one would allow a candidate to belong to a “white separatist” church, so the reverse should apply. Sen. Obama and his wife have made their bed - it’s time for them to lie in it.

This tells you something about Sen. Obama’s judgement. From a party that has taken Bush to task for his bad judgement in picking his “staff” - will we have the same problems with Obama?

In any campaign something like this is sure to come up. People have been waiting to torpedo Obama’s campaign and this provides them a great chance. It is up to Obama to see if he will distance himself from this man in order to save his campaign.

That being said, I do not think Obama is a racist and I do not accept the idea that whatever this preacher says during the heat of a campaign can be fairly attributed to Obama. I think Obama is a reasonable man and I am hoping he takes this oppurtunity to show he has what it takes to lead.

I am a white male living in St. Charles County who voted for Barack Obama, and plan to do so in November! Can either of the previous commentors please specifically identify what was it that Mr. Wright said that would prove that he hates whites (or anyone else for that matter)? It is not enough to say that simply because he espouses(?) views - many of which I hear directly from my Afrfican American friends - that he is racist.

It is those from Bill Clinton to Bob Johnson to Geraldine Farrow who continue to inject race into this campaign because she doesn’t have a leg to stand on in the Democratic campaign. Please let’s not even discuss John “I HAVE NO PLAN FOR THE ECONOMY” McCain.

Barack is going to be President - that is unless this country is hell-bent on returning to the 1930’s.

I saw in the clip when Barack’s Role Model was talking about his enemies, the enemies of his “church”, do you realize who he is talking about? The majority of the country are his enemies. Can some reporter, any reporter, get Barack to answer some questions about this guy? Does BMN believe that the majority of the country are his enemies as Wright stated? Is BMN filled with as much hate as Wright? Does he expect us to believe that he was a member of this church for half of his life and wasnt aware of this type of speech? Was his membership in the church just a political move to get the votes of those in the congregation early in his political career?

I would like to add that I am not really surprised that some dems are defending Wright/Obama, afterall, this is the same party that still has a KKK member in the senate.

Hmmmm…

What to do, what to do?

Denounce this guy in the strongest of terms… reputing 20 years of association, and risk offending his Black base while loosing his ’street cred’ (tears optional)

Or stand by his man, and take the heat and risk loosing his fawning press and white yuppies. (rage optional)

Or do nothing… and be seen as the mealy mouth political hack from Cook county that he is. (brains optional)

My, my, my…
