Race, Wright or Wrong

In Illinois, political observers are probably already familiar with the topic of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the former and sometimes incendiary pastor of Sen. Barack Obama’s church in Chicago.

Wright continues to be back in the news, and has resurfaced this week as an epilogue to the back-and-forth about race and Obama’s campaign. This has, of course, been fueled by comments from Geraldine Ferraro, a surrogate for Sen. Hillary Clinton.

I’ve posted a roundup of political analysis over at DC Download, and then opened it up for comments and thoughts. This one is about robust, but CIVIL, debate. Head here and share your thoughts.

Steve Elliot - So not voting for the black guy automatically makes some one a “1930’s” racist? Thats nuanced. Also, McCain is a true limited government guy while Obama quietly announced a 1 trillion dollar tax increase. That increase will provide a 12 percent increase on the middle class alone. Yeah, that will help the economy huh?

It’s not so much anti-white racism as America is an evil nation notions in his speach. This wasn’t, America made mistakes and we shall rise above. It’s the government is evil, the country is evil and its run by rich white people (implicating that white people are evil too). He stated that we were terrorists to Japan in WWII, neglecting the Pearl Harbor bombing that started the conflict. He claimed that we deserved 9/11. “God Dam America” he said, not let’s fix America. And the cream of the cake is his claim that the government created HIV to kill blacks.

Obama picked this churched. He took Wright in as a mentor. He allowed this man to perform his marriage and baptize his children. He took his kids to listen to these sermons. He named his book in honor of a Wright sermon. If McCain had a pastor that extolled how bad the country was because blacks were in it, I think it would be an issue. I think McCain would have already dropped out. Obama only softheartedly stood back from these comments. If I had a pastor preaching this hate I wouldn’t be there for 20 YEARS. Come freaking on.

As White Rose Society would say - Wake Up America!

I keep thinking about all the pedophile Priests that have been protected by the Catholic church and wonder if the parents of all the children they babtized and all the couples they married and all the families that invited them into their homes are now pedophiles themselves?

Isn’t it ironic that you want to lable Obama as a racists because of the views of his pastor? What were all your feelings when Jerry Falwell said, “The ACLU has got to take a lot of blame for this. And I know I’ll hear from them for this, but throwing God…successfully with the help of the federal court system…throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools, the abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked and when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad…I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who try to secularize America…I point the thing in their face and say you helped this happen.”

And then Pat Robertson said, “I totally concur, and the problem is we’ve adopted that agenda at the highest levels of our government, and so we’re responsible as a free society for what the top people do, and the top people, of course, is the court system.”

I voted for (early) Edwards and am no fan of Hillary nor Obama but I think this is much ado about nothing.

PS the Falwell/Robertson quotes were shortly after 9-11.

Let’s take a closer look at who’s really qualified and or who’s really
working for the good of all of us in the Senate. Obama or Clinton.

Senator Clinton, who has served one full term - 6yrs. - and another
year campaigning, has managed to author and pass into law - 20 - twenty
pieces of legislation in her first six years.

These bills can be found on the website of the Library of Congress
http://www.thomas.loc.gov , but to save you trouble, I’ll post them here for you.

1. Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.

2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.

3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.

4. Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.

5. Name courthouse after James L. Watson.

6. Name post office after Jon A. O’Shea.

7. Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.

8. Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition
Day.

9. Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial
of his death.

10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men’s Lacrosse Team on
winning the championship.

11. Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men’s Lacrosse Team on
winning the championship.

12. Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution
Commemorative Program.

13. Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.

14. Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express
condolences on her death.

15. Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who
lost their lives on duty. Only five of Clinton’s bills are, more substantive.

16. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.

17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11

18. Assist landmine victims in other countries.

19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.

20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as
protected in the wilderness preservation system.

There you have it, the fact’s straight from the Senate Record.

Now, I would post those of Obama’s, but the list is too substantive, so
I’ll mainly categorize.

During the first - 8 - eight years of his elected service he sponsored
over 820 bills. He introduced

233 regarding healthcare reform,

125 on poverty and public assistance,

112 crime fighting bills,

97 economic bills,

60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,

21 ethics reform bills,

15 gun control,

6 veterans affairs and many others.

His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and
co-sponsored another 427. These inculded **the Coburn-Obama Government
Transparency Act of 2006 - became law, **The Lugar-Obama Nuclear
Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, -
became law, **The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the
Senate, **The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, - became law, **The
Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, In committee,
and many more.

In all, since entering the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890
bills and co-sponsored another 1096.

An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no record according
to some who would prefer that this comparison not be made public.

He’s not just a talker.
He’s a doer.

Pass it on….It’s impressive

Steve, I doubt your numbers are correct. 890 bills in two years? That is over a bill a day, and we all know the senate isnt in session for most of the year, so he would have had to author what 4-5 or more bills a day while the senate is in session? Not even the most hard core lefties would believe that.

We have gone from overt racism to plain ignorance in this country. When I finally got to hear these comment of this pastor I have to question how some of them are seen as racist.

Only whites that have forgotten that blacks were brought here as slaves, treated as sub-human after being freed, terrorized by sheet wearing leaders of the community, had LAWS of seperation and abuse, were hanged in public as a town spectacle while even children watched….. will question why Michelle Obama is just now proud of this country. Do you think going to the moon made us proud when just 5 years prior we couldn’t have sat at the same lunch counter and watched it happen?

So what else did he say that was racist? That rich whites control it. Bill O’reilly had McCain on his show and said that the country was controlled by a white male christian power structure that McCain didn’t deny. Whats the difference? Why is it racist when a black man points it out? He said Hillary hasn’t been called n*****. She probably hasn’t. She didn’t grow up as a black boy in a single parent home. Whats racist about that?

Lets get out of our comfort zones folk. There may be some stuff that he said that was inflammatory. But alot of what he and Michelle Obama have said is nothing more than a view from the average black persons eyes in America. Some of you need to wake up and remember that we have not had the same road to today in this country. While you can just sweep it under the rug and forget we remember it when we sign our last name that often came from the slave master of our ancestors. Some of us still have parents and grandparents that can tell us firsthand about the KKK and segregation. Its not just swept under the rug for us. The fact that the conservatives tried to exploit this shows that America has become ignorant enough to buy this. Try to realize for a change that no matter how bad you want it to be so you can just forget about it…..our word is not yours.

Let’s take these one by one.

Bubba Union - The difference between Wright and pedophile priests is that Wright spews his filth from the pulpit. Priests molest in private. I think if a parent saw their child molested from the pulpit on Sunday they might leave the freaking Church. Oh and hey, Falwell and Robertson are nuts that have very little traction with mainstream culture.

Steve - I see you link to Hillarys Bills, but where is your citation for Obamas numbers? Those figures seem just a little bit skewed and uncoroborated. Wanna flesh that out a bit?

Phil - I think where the Rev Wright really lost me was a) we deserved 9/11 b) we were terrorists to the Japanese in WWII (forgetting to mention Pearl Harbor c) claiming that the federal governement released HIV to kill blacks. Now any sane person should recognize and strive to move past histories mistakes, but assigning blame to people who weren’t involved and fomenting false accusations to stir hatred is wrong. Obama should have picked up his child and walked right out the door. This is not Doctor King speaking.

Oh and for one more point, Obama announced a planned 1 trillion dollar tax increase that will rape the middle class. If he is writing 892 bills every two years, thats exactly what I want, massive economy crushing tax increases.

You guys are just insane, and scary.

Not everyone can say they support any (political) thing their Pastor says so why would ANYONE hold Obama to a different standard WRIGHT or wrong?

I think it’s pretty clear that Obama, who clearly surrounds himself with racists, is NOT the person we need or want as president. IF THE WHITE CANDIDATES BELONGED TO A CHURCH THAT SPOKE SO ABOMINABLY ABOUT BLACKS AND OUR GREAT COUNTRY, the black population would be marching (or rioting) in the streets all over the country until Clinton or McCain dropped out of the presidential race - and that’s a fact (and I wouldn’t blame them). From the few clips that have been released to the public showing his pastor (who he is so close to that he thinks of him as an UNCLE), it is evident that the pastor and the members are not only racist, but sound a little “off the chart”. Wright preaches not only racism, but also denounces these great United States by saying “God damn America” instead of “God Bless America”! And states that the U.S. basically deserved 9/11 and that “the chickens have come home to roost”! And then states that white America invented the HIV virus to punish blacks (words to that effect). This man is a psycho. Obama has also proven that he’s a liar when he acts as if he had no idea the man makes these kinds of comments.

Why won’t St. Louis’ primary news channels (2, 4, 5) carry this news about Obama and his racist “pastor” like they do on CNN, MSNBC, etc? A lot of POOR folks don’t get cable, and they need to know about this GREAT man and the people he surrounds himself with, and who he is so close to that he considers him an Uncle.
