Smooth move? Reed, facing debt, hosts jazz fundraiser
Board of Aldermen prez Lewis Reed is inviting supporters to help celebrate his first-year in office - and maybe help pay the bills from a successful election.
Twelve months ago, Reed shocked much of City Hall with an upset victory over Jim Shrewsbury, whose insider status, southside appeal and sturdy bank account made him a heavy favorite for re-election.
But the stars aligned for Reed, who benefited from the support of firefighters (nursing a 20-year grudge against Shrewsbury over a pension vote) and contested races that brought voters out in wards that favored him. (The Fourth Ward, for instance.)
It may have also helped Reed that there was a rare GOP primary in the 12th Ward, keeping many Shrewsbury supporters from voting in the Democratic contest.
But elections cost money. Reed’s campaign took on more than $100,000 in debt, most of which came from Reed himself.
Tonight, Reed is hosting a jazz-themed fundraiser, where he stands to recoup at least some of the money he shelled out. The event is at Sqwires in Lafayette Square, a neighborhood Reed represented when he was Sixth Ward alderman.
