Steelman declares illegal immigrants cost state at least $26 million a year

State Treasurer Sarah Steelman, a Republican running for governor, says she plans to appear before a state Senate committee Wednesday and “present an analysis and testimony…that illegal workers are likely costing Missouri between $26 and $49 million every year.”

She will present her findings during a hearing of various pieces of legislation aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration,” a release from her office said.

Aside from any policy aims, Steelman’s political angle would be to stake out a strong position against illegal immigration — a popular position with the Republican base in Missouri, but not so popular with some of the GOP-leaning corporate interests.

Steelman also is likely intending to put some pressure on her chief rival for governor, U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof, R-Columbia, who is seen as having a friendlier relationship with some of those corporate interests.

“Steelman plans to testify in support of Senate Bill 858, which would create penalties for employers who knowingly employ illegal or undocumented workers. But, the focus of her testimony will be on the amount of money that the practice of hiring illegals is costing the state.”

Steelman says her analysis is based on an assessment from the Pew Hispanic Center that estimates that Missouri in 2005 had between 35,000 and 65,000 illegal workers. She then is multiplying “an annual average wage of $25,000″ to reach an assessment “that total revenue lost to the state and federal government combined is between $243,613,125 and $449,499,375.

“The hiring of illegal workers not only costs Missourians jobs, it cheats Missouri taxpayers at the same time,” said Steelman in a statement. “It is time that we put a stop to it.”

I have a freind living in Overland MO. He said the Wal Mart at Northwest Plaza is full of Illegal Mexicans. None of them speak English.
Where is the INS and ICE?????
He tells me the Overland Police are non-responsive to complaints about Illegals living in Overland and Saint Ann????
I thought MO was leading the fight against Illegals or is Overland and Saint Ann exempt for enforcing the law????

I may have a hard time understanding things but it seems to me that for every illegal worker there is an illegal employer. Why are the employers not held accountable? If their practices are costing the state 29 million per year why is the focus always on the workers not on the employers?

Fine them once, fine them twice then jail them the third time. We’ll see how fast they quit hiring illegals and when the job market dries up we’ll be closer to eliminating the illegal employer/worker problem.

I’ll admit that immigration is not my area of policy expertise, but the methodology Jo describes Steelman using for this type of study is flawed and based on the inaccurate findings of the Pew studies from several years ago (which also suffered methodological limitations).

Seriously the methodology developed by “Steelman” sounds like it was actually devised by a freshman intern in her office. I can’t wait to see a copy myself.

Illegal immigrants who are employed by corporations are paying into social security, a plan that they will not be able to draw from. Where is all of that money? Further, immigrants all need vehicles and gas and pay the tax on these items. In addition there are a lot of landlords who rent apartments to immigrants. Imagine all of the vacant property if they were to expelled. Are you willing to start paying more in grocery stores/ What about restuaraunts?

I agree there needs to be improvements to the system. But expelling everyone is not a good fix.

How does your friend know those people in the Wal-Mart are illegal? Is it simply because they do not speak English? Or is it because they are latino? Maybe your friend checkerd their papers.
Having lived in another country myself where I struggled to speak the language, I hope we in America are better then using skin color or language ability to determine immigration status.

I’m glad we finally have someone who will stand up and not be afraid to tell the truth when it comes the problem of illegal immigration. Steelman seems like she’s not afraid to fight the powers that be to make sure employers are not hiring illegals to do work in the state. I’ve been undecided on who to vote for in the primary, but now I’m definately leaning toward Steelman.

Richard - Being a Latino does not mean you are an illegal. But the vast majority of illegals are Latinos. The absurd thing is that I, whose family immigrated here a century ago, have to provide all sorts of documentation to get a job or a driver’s license. But when somebody who obviously was not born here, and who doesn’t even speak English, is asked for proof of citizenship, that’s racism. And when somebody is determined to be here illegally, and some of us think that person should be deported, that is also racism.

Why not just take the Ronald Reagan approach, let’s give them all amnesty, declare them citizens and declare the problem solved for a couple decades? Whoops, doesn’t seem like the last Republican to deal with the issue had a solution that worked out well either.

Steelman’s issue here has nothing to do with her offering a solution, because that’s not what she is doing. So to everyone who wants to label her a person tackling illegal immigration think again. Steelman’s only beating a drum, stirring up conservative votes for November.

In reality, Missouri has so few illegal immigrants relative to other states we could hardly use an argument that they are “stealing” jobs from Missourians. The only thing “stealing” jobs from Missourians are the failed economic policies of the Blunt administration and the Republican-led legislature. If you really think our soaring unemployment rate is to blame on illegal immigrants, think again. Sectors that would be likely to employ illegals are not suffering relative to the high paying sectors like manufacturing and finance. There’s a clear discrepancy between what’s being said and what the data shows, at least for Missouri.

Place heavy fines and stiff penalties for the “rat” employers who cheat the system.
Set a precedent that stikes the fear of money in these un-patritoic scab employers.
Maybe, just once, Republicans can show some respect for working Missourians.

“State Treasurer Sarah Steelman, a Republican running for governor, says she plans to appear before a state Senate committee Wednesday and “present an analysis and testimony…that illegal workers are likely costing Missouri between $26 and $49 million every year.”

I ask again, if the workers are costing Missouri $26 to $49 mil per year how much do the illegal companies that hire them cost? Do they bear any finanical obligaiton to the state? If elected Governor would Mrs. Steelman actively persue the illegal employers to recover some of the money that the illegal workers are costing the state?

Garrison (post #10)

“Maybe, just once, Republicans can show some respect for working Missourians.”

…and get vilified in the press for being racist for their trouble.

I say ’screw ‘em all’! Deport the illegals, jail the employers, fine the landlords, put ICE and the local cops outside of WalMart and anywhere else that is not on the way to the border.

We could ’settle’ this in 30 days… if we want to

But we don’t really want to

The left thinks it’s too mean… the right wants the cheap labor.

and so it goes

#5: John:

There is 81 billion in the Social Security Fund that is not assigned and presumable a large portion of that is illegal aliens deductions.

However, in the USA, after all taxes and contributions of illegals are added together, the American taxpayer is subsidizing illegals to the tune of 87 billion per year.

So in one year, the 81 billion that has accumulated over 20 or more years is cancelled out by the American charity to illegals of 87 billion.

When all the illegals leave, there will be some minor disruption to certain areas of the economy. All the dishonest business will suffer. Boo hoo hoo. Serves them right for cheating.

But within 6 months to a year the economy will right itself. And we can bring in legal immigations from all over the world if we need labor. That way ALL AMERICANS get a chance to bring in their family and race.. vs racist preferential amnesty for Hisapnics.

The arguments you make, and many businesses make, are the same that were used to argue against the abolishiton of slavery. Greed never changes.

There is no possible way American can ever again give amensty.

In 1986 Americans said no way, it will just encourage more illlegal immigration. Reagan convinced enough to go along with his plan. Average Joe Blow Citizen was right.

The Rule of Law = one law for everyone, applied equally.

Give amnesty= abolition of the rule of law. Rewards criminal conduct,. Gives racist preference
to illegals over legal immigrants and all other American citizens.

Our country is great because we strictly believe in the rule of law.

T\\hird world countries are corrupt, crime ridden failures without an economy because they do not follow the rule of law.

It is really that simple. You cannot have a functioning country by handing out amnesty to law breakers. Period.

How does this sound for starters, a $500 fine per illegal hired, doubled for each additional raid, BUT for each illegal they turn in, they get a $500 tax credit. and in both cases, the illegals get deported.

— Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum
2:19 pm March 5th, 2008

SVPPB at #14: The average company doesn’t care about one-time tax credits, they want sales and EBITDA.

Steelman’s analysis is shallow, even beyond the point made at #4. The fact that Pew believes there are 35,000 to 65,000 illegal workers does not mean that all of them are outside of the tax rolls. Many of them do receive a regular paycheck net of tax and Social Security withholdings. Those who actually are paid only in cash are almost certainly not averaging a $25,000 wage, which would translate to more than $10 an hour.

Will any state legislator challenge Steelman on her math? Naaah.

Isn’t the burden of following the laws here concerning employment a burden that should be far more the responsibility of the empoyer?

The illegal immigration problem is just another one of our country’ s great evils of greed that this country have refused to learn from from history. Stop blaming illegals for the problem, who can blame them for wanting honest work? But, what about personal responsibility (Conservatives favorite lingo) on the part of our government and employers?

As far as I am concerned all the illegals with a job are grandfathered into this country as citizens due to our corrupt government and employers turning their heads to what has been going on for decades.

The only reason it is causing issues today is because illegals started stepping into the White male blue collar construction industry, (big threat to the White American man). America didn’t care about employers effect on Black communities when Swift etc…, moved away leaving Black men unable to support themselves and families. No one cared about the effects that this have had on the Black community for decades. These communities are now destroyed, too late now, but politicians are attempting to cause division between Blacks and Hispanics in this present day. This must not happen. (This is what the Hillary Clinton Democratic Party and Democratsare famous for, not to mention Republicans amongst Black and Whites).

Well, not much of a construction home market to fight over now, nor will there be for a long, long time. ASll should honestly judge way, and it has absolutely nothing to do with Blacks or Hispanics, but White greed and corruption.

Thank God that good people of all races are finally having the blinders taken off their eyes. It is possible that we all can all live in harmony together and have productive lives. This is the hope that I look forward to in this country, for enough people to put aside their differences and work towards fairness, equality and a just society for all.

How on earth can this country justify sending them back after they have been here so long and their children growing up here? What is this about fining them without fining the employers and making them share equally in the fines for those illegals working for them. Under no circumstances should the illegal workers suffer any punishment or fines without these employers sharing just as much responsibilty.

Hopefully there are enough good people out there who love doing whats right and willing to put aside their self serving ways and dealings for the good of the whole .

GRASSFIRE “Where’s The Fence??”

There have only been two sections of the designed, legislated, and approved, double-layered fence built. One section near San Diego, and the other at San Luis (Yuma), AZ. Both of these sections have been very highly effective at stopping illegal immigration.

We need more of this orginally designed, legislated, and funded fence.

I just signed a petition demanding our leaders in Congress to
build the border fence–as it was promised to us. I’m asking you
to join me in signing.

Thanks for joining with me, and thank you for passing this on to friends who feel as you do.

California has over 1 million illegal immigrant students; each illegal immigrant student costs $9,912 a year for education. The total cost for education of illegal immigrant students in California is over 10 billion dollars a year.

Incarceration of illegals in California alone is 1.4 billion dollars a year.

It costs Los Angeles County, excluding the cost of education of illegal immigrants, over 1 BILLION DOLLARS a year, for welfare, food stamps, healthcare, and law enforcement, for illegal immigrants.

I applaud Miss Steelman, but honestly the massive amounts of U.S. taxpayers hard earned money because of illegal immigration issues, and man are there a ton, is an outrage. It is nothing less than theft of the tax money that is supposed to go to American citizens and legal residents, who never ever seem to be served by the politcians of this nation,(YOU KNOW PUBLIC “SERVANTS”,) (BARF), WHO WASTE AMERICANS RESOURCES ON THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN GIVEN PERMISSION TO EVEN BE IN THIS COUNTRY. Most illegal aliens have committed at least one felony. These include document fraud, social security fraud, ID theft, conspiracy to violate federal immigration laws, income tax evasion, welfare fraud, food stamp fraud, etc. Foreign lawbreakers are no better or worse than American lawbreakers. Illegal aliens need to be arrested, they need to do time behind bars for their crimes, and then they need to be deported.

— Jasper
9:07 pm March 5th, 2008

For those of you in Missouri that do not know what is happening next door in Oklahoma, you will see a flood of illegals migrating from OK. A new law there is clamping down on employers who hire illegals and also giving benefits to illegals that they are not supposed to be getting. By the way for those of you who believe the myth of “all Latinos are hard workers”, I can tell you from personal experience that they have their share of lazy bums among them. I can tell you that they will not hesitate to hit your church’s outreach to the poor, picking up free groceries and clothes. How do you think they manage to have any money to send home after being paid low wages under the table? And for those of you who buy the myth that they only take the jobs Americans don’t want (like stoop labor in agriculture) you are mistaken. In addition to working in all kinds of construction work, they are also driving delivery trucks with false licenses. I had a delivery man who could not read the bill of lading (written in English) who only spoke Spanish try to deliver the wrong chemicals to our business. Despite telling him in Spanish about his error, he pushed the wrong chemicals at me. I called his boss (who spoke a heavily accented English) who then told him which chemicals to deliver to me. Another example: Police do routine stops on delivery trucks in LA because many are not safe to operate. My husband was driving ours and got pulled over. The cop told him that his was the first truck to pass the inspection that day and that was in the afternoon! By the way, we were rear ended by a drunk illegal who was arrested by a local cop who saw what happened. We had to pay $500 fee on our insurance to get the car fixed per our insurance company. (We no longer carry that company’s insurance!) Check with your company to see who will pay when you get hit by an uninsured illegal alien. I learned my lesson.

This year when I hit a young woman who pulled out in front of me in a parking lot and immediately wanted to settle, I gave her my name and address, showed her my license and told her I had to contact my insurance company when I got home (no cell phone on me). I also asked for her name and address, and to see her drivers license. She had no drivers license.

When her husband called the house to try to collect, we let him know that we knew hias wife was driving without a license and that was against the law, so our insurance company wouldn’t pay. He hung up and we never heard again. Incidentally her car already lost a rear brake light which had not been replaced (illegal) and this suggested I was not the first person she had pulled out in front of. In California, many illegals earn money from gullible Americans by being the “victimes” of accidents.

So don’t believe the myth that all the illegals are just here to work a job. We have learned in California. Unfortunately big Agriculture tends have too much influence in this state. It doesn’t seem to occur to them that if they mechanized like our raisin and tomato farmers have, they would pay LESS in wages. One raisin farmer cut down his crew to just five workers who work year round instead bringing in seasonal workers by the truck loads.

In case you don’t know, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has a winery, so she has a vested interest in having a open border. And if you don’t know what happened in 1986 when we had our first amnesty, farmers dishonestly “verified” that many had worked on their farms for a “fee.” The same thing will happen again. Also expect the newly legal to leave the ag jobs, the unsafe jobs, and the jobs where they are mistreated. Once legal, they can lodge complaints without fear of deportation. That fear is what keeps them “in line” now. We saw that in 1986 too. Then they will truely compete with Americans.

I hope that when these people tally the costs of illegals living in the states that keep in mind the costs for the schools, courts, prisons, various expenses to accomidate their needs. They must also tell us how much money is being spent on the children born to the illegals who are citizens and entitled to social services. This loophole costs us alot of money and the pro illegal people like to make sure that these kids aren’t considered as part of the costs of illegal immigration because after all they are citizens.

Whichever city/state provides sanctuary to illegals—–the illegals will come in large numbers.

There was an article that came out last week……..Arizona is spending $40 million a year just in education costs of the children of illegals!!!!! That is not including any other costs associated with illegals!!!

Ms. Steelman sounds better than her counterparts. To quote “Nick”, In reality, Missouri has so few illegal immigrants relative to other states we could hardly use an argument that they are “stealing” jobs from Missourians. Nick you must not be employed in a construction trade, but are probably sitting in a climate controlled office paying an ‘immigrant’ to mow your yard, clean your home or raise your children. You have probably not worked in the elements for much of your life.

Nick you do not live in Arizona, Texas, California or New Mexico, so you have not seen the invasion by the Mexican military crossing our borders, the home invasions, the murders, rapes, child molestations, drunk drivers or any other crimes by those who have not yet invaded YOUR state, but they are coming. They will check out your wife, your daughter, your son and watch and wait until you leave your home.

You’re in Missouri, which is still a somewhat ’safe’ state, but the employers there are hiring them over Americans and before you know it, Missouri will look like Arizona, Texas, New Mexico and California. You sir are most likely an employer of illegals and laughing all the way to bank at the demise of our laws, values and our country. A couple more years and your ‘data’ will look much different in Missouri.

Keep up the good work Ms. Steelman. Our country needs more representatives like you.
