What’s a CAFO? Jeff Harris will tell you

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Stymied by conventional political methods, State Rep. Jeff Harris did what so many of his colleagues have already done: Make his own video.

A farm-animal cartoon, no less.

Though it may not have the same appeal as the, say, now infamous Brock Olivo interview, Harris, a Democrat running for Attorney General, released a production today highlighting his stance on something called a CAFO.

What’s a CAFO, you ask?

As Harris is eager to tell you, a “concentrated animal feeding operation” is just what it sounds like - a high-density farming outfit that packs a lot of livestock in a small place.

One of the concerns surrounding these type of facilities is the environmental impact - all that animal waste has to go somewhere.

Harris, who’s from Columbia, has legislation that toughens the requirements to open an animal-feeding outfit.

But Harris says that House Speaker Rod Jetton has kept the legislation from reaching the floor - hence the video pitch.

Enjoy…

Jeff has the best ideas of any of the candidates and will be a fantastic attorney general.

This is great. I love the video, a nice touch from the Harris campaign.

Harris is right about one thing: he’s the only candidate with a plan for addressing the CAFO problems in Missouri.

Real estate studies tell us that CAFOs result in lower property values in surrounding areas in addition to the various environmental issues posed by pollutants leaving the sites. While CAFOs are a vital part of the country’s food security, they must be operated with best management practices in mind. Something the people of this state (eg. Doyle Childers) seem to forget or neglect.

It’s a shame the Republican leadership won’t allow common sense legislation to move forward simply because it is sponsored by a Democrat.

Great Western audio, man! Fits this state just fine.

i believe, like others on this blog, that this piece of legislation is common sense and needs to get passed. i am thankful that we have good legislators like jeff to at lease introduce the idea/bill to try to make some positive change.

Where is Donnelly on this issue? All she has done is back Harris’ plan. Harris is clearly leading the charge on CAFO regulation in the state while Donnelly, Koster and Gibbons all take the back seat.

The video is great and so is Harris’ proposal. It’s time for Republican leadership to support the proposal and admit that Missouri’s regulatory scheme for CAFOs is weak and inadequate.

good for Harris! but that’s related to attorney general because . . . ?
if just that shows his good qualities and highlights the issue, works for me!
potentially important issue for prospective congresspeople, too, as effects environment and may be appropriate for national legislation.

and stopping animal abuse on factory farms definitely one of my important issues on platform; dont know yet if that happens on all cafo’s, but that’s the way to bet!

Bill

Mr. Haas,

Thanks you for your kind comments about Jeff.

Protecting the environment is one three or four most important things the attorney general does. For instance, the office sued Premium Standard Farms. PSF has a number of CAFOs.

I am biased but this kind of proposal means that Jeff is looking at what the attorney general does and what he can do as attorney general.

Jeff has seven or eight substantive proposals about what he will do when he is attorney general. He was an integral part of that office when he worked there and he will hit the ground running. I believe he will be the best attorney general the state has ever had.

Donnelly has a bill beefing up product safety in Missouri. Harris didnt sign on nor does he have a “plan” on the issue. Does that mean he wants children to eat lead off of toys and to die in shoddy cribs? Of course not. The attack on Donnelly is weak and unnecessary. He has a great bill and he should stick to the positives and knock those who oppose it — Koster.
