Blunt to run again — in St. Louis marathon
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Shaking off the jet lag from his trip overseas, Gov. Matt Blunt announced this week that he’s ready to go the distance again in the St. Louis Marathon.
As reported earlier in our Jog Blog, Blunt and his staff, for the second year in a row, will participate in the marathon’s relay competition, where four runners divide up the 26. 2 mile route.
In addition to the governor, the “Running With Blunt” team includes:
- John Russell, deputy chief of staff
- Rich Chrismer, communications director
- Mary Craven, an aide to Melanie Blunt
Last year, we’re told, the governor’s team finished with a time of 3:29:32, giving them a pace of just under eight-minute miles.

Team Blunt at last year’s marathon

I support baby Blunt and his team 100% in this endeavor since there is nothing he can screw up………….is there?
Let’s start a marathon sponsorship for other political candidates in the St. Louis area who are running for Congress or the House. I’ll contribute a $1,000 to anyone who is willing to run in this marathon and who is an underdog needing the money for their campaign.
Any other takers who want to particpate or match me?
How does that sound?
I accept depending on the conditions. can reach me at website at runbillrun.com (appropriate it would seem); have injured hip, so havent run more than 6 in several months; definitely an underdog, if not in primary certainly in general. if I did the 1/2 marathon would that count, or do I have to go the full distance? is it this saturday? I have to work in morning and dont think I could get out; 4 laps around forest park in afternoon count? you can be there or take my word; I wouldnt be able to run all of it; welcome to write me at campaign email of billhaasforcongress@yahoo.com
my campaign fund down to fumes; certainly could use it.
thanks, Ann
it’s sunday, isnt it? contact me, please; what are the details?
I guess I’ll go down after work to sign up saturday; what if havent heard from you?
1/2 marathon ok? baby Blunt’s only going 6; cant hold 8’s anymore; used to hold 7’s; with hip injury it’s 10-11’s; and ran in rain monday 75 minutes; wet shoes from forest park aggravated injury; can barely walk; but I’m an aminal when it’s on the line. some people run marathons walking every other mile; maybe I’ll do that. talk to me, sweetness.
it reminds me of the guy who went to the doctor and said that his love life was suffering with his wife and he wanted to know what to do; his doctor said to run 10 miles a day for a month and it should improve.
after the 30 days, the guy called his doctor and the doctor asked him how things were going with his wife; the guy said, “I dont know, I’m 300 miles from home.” or something like that.
too bad that hasnt been the running program baby Blunt has been on.
I remember when Jake had a post on this last year, I think: I thought then that “going the distance” in an article on the marathon, when only running 6+, not a hyperbole to my taste; but under the circumstances of what I’m now going to have to try to do on sunday, perhaps I’m not in a good position to judge others writing or running right now; glass houses, Caesar’s salad’s wife, and like that.
it would appear all Bill all the time; I’m sure we can do better than that but one last thought:
if Blunt going 6.55 miles is “going the distance” for a marathon, him going 1/4 of the way on an issue is more than he usually does.
How did you injure your hip, Bill?
What does the reference to Caesar salad’s wife mean?
Four laps around Forest Park is equivalent to what distance?
Where do you work on Saturdays, Mr. Haas?
Hi Ann.
1. Caesar salad’s wife a little silly play on words; reference to Caesar’s wife beyond reproach; meant shouldnt tease Blunt about his running when I have some to do myself.
long way (old way) around park is still 6, tho they shortened official path; so 4×6=24, but I’ll be able to run marathon course Sunday; even will pay the $50+ t0 make it official; ran the 1/2 a couple years ago; 9’s..
running November 1st, day got home from dad’s funeral in Florida, tho not really related, running with Sweetie the Rott/Cattledog running partner, sweet but skittish, 1/4 mile into my run, Sweetie scared by bike, bolted into me, took out the leg I was about to land on, landed on hip/butt where gludius and other ligament/tendons attach to hipbone, seems to have torn soft tissue, nothing that showed up on xray. couldnt walk to car, EMS came, 8 hours later out of emergency room, crutches a couple weeks, running a little by late December. about 90% better now, but obviously hurts from Monday run so not healed and may not, but I can run some, not usually two days in row, with Ibuprofen.
So do we have a deal? what is it?
would it be easier to write me on campaign email? already emailed media I accepted your kind offer (unilateral offer, I think, is what we say in contract law, tho said I view your part as moral not legal obligation). work saturday but race is sunday, so work not a factor.
Going to sign up saturday, run/walk as best I can Sunday, unless you say you were kidding and bet is off; may do it anyhow. If I make it 13, twice as long as Blunt, my part considered done?
ran a couple 4 hour marathons in 89/90, 1:33 half-marathons (7:05’s; I seem to have peaked those years). Attempted marathon through all 28 wards during 2005 mayor’s race. Ran 18-20, walked last 6-8. So I used to be able to run ok; not so much lately. My swimming’s ok, though, if slow.
So, Ann, we have a deal not that I’ve accepted your kind offer.
Hope you’ll email me if we do.
best, Bill
I would have hoped for a better turnout. I thought St. Louis was such a giving, charitable place to live and a sports town who well supports their teams.
I was hoping to get strike up more enthusiasm from sponsors and candidates alike. With only one candidate coming forward, maybe this is not the appropriate forum. The media could assist with this endeavor I could only hope.
As far as Bill’s willingness to participate with an injury no less, we all find that commendable. This marathon would not have to be scheduled for this weekend by all means. We could do some planning and schedule it for May, but we DO need more supporters and participants to make this work.
So if anyone in the media or elsewhere would like to participate, please communicate it to others not necessarily on this blog and we can get this off the ground.
well, this blog might not be that widely read, Ann, but just a question.
Is your offer of $1000 for a congressional candidate who matches Blunt’s participation, or otherwise participates in the marathon day, still good or not. Might affect might interest in the 6 hours of adventure.
as I’ve said, if wish to make good on your offer, may email me, or commit to donating the money on my website if I do it, and need to clarify how many miles I’m committed to to do my part.
thanks, Bill
I guess I’ll wait to hear from you before clarifying any arrangement with the media.
I hoped they give it some publicity that might help it spread.
If you email me, I’ll give you my media email list, it’s extensive, which when they hear from you might help them publicize it!
If I may suggest a clarification on your offer:
“any congressional candidate that completes a leg on a marathon relay or 1/2 marathon on their own this sunday, will participate in sharing your $1000 and any other money offered by others to congressional or other candidates. So if I’m the only one, I can live with that.
To collect, candidates would have to notify you by email or on this thread prior to the marathon day to be eligible.”
how does that sound?
thanks, best, Bill
Please remove Donald Trump’s mug advertisement on the opening screen.
Who would want to take advice from somebody who went bankrupt twice and can’t even acquire a decent hairpiece?
opening screen of what, Sandy? I can see it in my mind but not place it; not my website, or stltoday, so what? thanks, Bill
Bill, go away, please (but, not to Washington)!
Bill- On the opening screen of STL Today.
Top right corner of this page actually–it alternates with MU High School ad.
Tim, my brother, I respect your right to support Akin. He’a a nice guy and has served his country well, as will I. And those 50,000 children in Missouri dont really need their health-care anyhow. Where do they think they are, America? or as my website will soon say, if you or someone you love ever lose their health care, you dont want Todd Akin in Congress representing you. He’s more about politics than people. Glad you have yours tho, Tim; hope you dont lose it; running 1/2 marathon sunday, I hope, with or without Ann’s promised money; welcome to join me; then you wont need insurance as much.
Where is the marathon being held?
What are your strategies and proposals for increasing healthcare coverage?
starts at 18th and market I believe, ends near there; goes down by the brewery and back then up market to forest park; 1/2 marathon turns around about newstead, full marathon keeps going around the park.
a lot of the lead on health-care will be taken by the president of course;
and health-care a complicated topic I dont pretend to be an expert on, tho smart enough to be one and I will;
but as far as I know now, for several years I’ve been a Single Payer advocate, Conyers/Kucinich Bill, covers everyone, reduces overhead 15% or so, that almost makes it pay for itself, business and employees will be less, roll back the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy makes up the difference, ballpark. the only ones hurt are pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies; all other businesses will be for it, even Walmart;; not socialized medicine, as medicare isnt; single payer is the same as medicare for all. this plan better than that of all the candidates’ because single payer gets the canard, false charge, of being socialized medicine, which is what pharmaceuticals and insurers and their rich republican campaign recipients call it.
thanks for asking; have you been to my website runbillrun.com?
website being redone, people will be able to give feedback on the issues; until then welcome your views at website email;
best, Bill
sorry never heard from you, Ann; I understand; your offer must have been made in a moment of irrational exuberance; I’ll presume it was sincere; I’ll try to keep my commitments when elected, irrational, exuberant, or otherwise.
Bill- Did you run in the marathon? When did you finish? Were you able to get any supporters?
since Ann never responded, slept in, needed my sleep
went 14 in park, 6 with running honey, last 8 with running Sweetie;
slightly under 12 per mile; long way from 9’s two years ago, but not bad for 63 year old guy who couldnt walk without a limp wednesday;
longest since injury, less than 6 months ago, back running less than 4;
or as I say, not bad for fat old guy with no talent, bad attitude and shabby training;
and not looking for other supports for my running;
Ann offered $1000 for any congressional candidate running in marathon like Blunt, I accepted, Ann got abducted by aliens; dont expect her to contribute as she said at this point, and tho I dont think I had legal or moral challenge to uphold my end under the circumstances, but welcomed the challenge anyhow, and try to keep my commitments;
people will support me, and I want their support, not because I hanging in there with my running and swimming ok for 63, but because will make them proud as a congressman, and because of my stands on health care, peace in iraq, middle-class tax cuts, loans for college, parents off work with pay to visit their kids and school, a safe and secure peace in the mideast, and like that;
so this is on 3d page now, and no one paying attention, or interested, including me;
welcome to write me at campaign email if want to chat further, Sandy, and thanks for your interest and support;
best, Bill
