Candidate for treasurer: Keep your money

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

As his rivals for the Democratic nomination exchange elbows, Mark Powell - mayor of Arnold and candidate for state treasurer - is seeking to temper expectations.

A sour economy and the recent flooding have hamstrung his ability to raise campaign cash, Powell writes in a campaign update.

“I have not focused on raising money, as most candidates always do,” says Powell, who ran for treasurer four years ago, as well. “While money is important, I realize we are in one of the most difficult economic times in many years.”

Instead of soliciting campaign donations, Powell offers this suggestion to potential donors: Keep your cash.

“Your money, while I would appreciate a donation, is best served in your pockets for family and household expenses,” Powell says.

The approach, while novel, may engender him to supporters feeling the economic pinch, but it won’t push him to the head of the pack when quarterly fundraising reports come available this week.

And that’s just fine by Powell.

“Because of my philosophy, I will be out raised and outspent by all of the other treasurer candidates,” he writes. “This does not bother me.”

This is extremely praiseworthy of Powell. I would like to see other candidates put their constituent’s finances above their own selfish needs of campaign fundraising.

This is a great thing, if you’re planning on losing. Until the media starts giving out free campaign ads, or quits selling them entirely, there’s not way to win without money.

Actually, I think Powell won the primary 4 years ago on much less cash than his opponents, so I tend to think that his grassroots effort will continue to appeal to voters who are sick of “typical politicians.” I, for one, am just tired of politicians who pander to lobbyiests and the estblishment.

Yes the fool spent no money and now we have Steelman because of it. The only thing she has been good for is making Hulshof spend money in the primary. We don’t need a jerk like him NOT to raise or spend any money in the general again. If he wants not to spend money then withdraw and let one of the other VIABLE candidates WIN in November! Please don’t spend anything more and GET OUT of the Treasurers race.

Isn’t he the guy that orchestrated the taking of the dentist’s office in Arnold, to put up a shopping center? This guy is worried about the plight of the working man? Right.

Save your money, you are going to need it for an attorney if your home gets between this guy and a strip mall.

You are correct Randy; he is the man gunning for the strip mall. What a hypocrite - he does not need campaign contributions - he probably is acquiring funds under the table from developers and utilizing his own funds - does he own a stake in the shopping centers ?

Don’t be fooled by Mr. Powell’s niceness. While he is telling you to keep your money in one breath he is agreeing to take peoples land by eminent domain in another breath. This man and the one’s that are in his group are career politicians and are only out for themselves. Don’t be fooled by this man. Vote NO for Mark Powell.

It is ludicrous that Powell assumes other people’s land by stealth and confiscates their property while acting like a prince who wouldn’t take a dime of the people’s money because they are struggling so hard to keep their heads above water.

Well, return their land to them if you’re such a nice man!

Powell epitomizes the word politician. Using one side of his face he tells you to keep your money instead of sending in political donations. At the same time and using the other side of his face he uses emminent domain, enforced by a corrupt judiciary, to take the land of others by force to give to big developers. On top of that Powell has lied and covered up criminal acts and wrongdoing by his chief of police. Powell does not deserve to be in public office. Instead he should be in jail.
