Check it out: Sinquefield’s chess club coming along
Opponents of educational vouchers have circled finance whiz Rex Sinquefield - whose prolific campaign contributions have altered the state’s political landscape - as enemy No. 1.
But soon they’ll have a chance to take on the spry millionaire at his own game - chess.
Besides being an investment guru, a school-choice enthusiast and one of the state’s most generous political donors, Sinquefield is also a chess aficionado.
As mentioned a few weeks ago, Sinquefield is opening up a chess club in St. Louis, which he promises will “physically be the most beautiful” in the country.
Visiting the site shows that progress towards that goal has already been made.
The location is in the heart of the fashionable Central West End, on Maryland Avenue between Brennan’s and Companion Bakery. A trendy architecture firm, Arcturis, has been tapped for the design.
A peek at the permits shows that the site is getting a makeover worth upwards of $1.1 million - most, if not all, of which is coming from Sinquefield.
We’re told that annual memberships will run $80 for adults and $30 for children.
Who knows - maybe the teacher’s union will finally be able to get Rex on board.
Grab a rook: Chess center on it’s way

It is fairly funny to me some people are so anti-Rex when they don’t even know the whole picture. Yes, Rex is trying to change MO…but for the better! Our schools are failing, the cities are losing populations (and therefore businesses), and Rex is trying to help.
He personally gains nothing…thats right…nothing from education reform except knowing that children may finally get a chance at a good education. Why are people so afraid of change?
This new Chess club idea is great. Children and adults can use this for a very small fee. I have been reading about chess and the positive benefits it has on a child’s learning experience.
For those who are not into the Rex ideals, open your eyes and realize he may be on to something. The NEA has been fighting change and now maybe they have met their match. Something needs to change around here if we expect our children to get a decent eduation.
