Cunningham explains how she became “just Jane”
State Senate hopeful Jane Cunningham has unveiled her campaign website - where informal salutations are apparently welcome.
The Republican state rep from Chesterfield has a section on her page labeled “I’m just Jane,” a phrase, we’re told, she’s made popular around the Capitol.
According to Cunningham, er, Jane, she coined the moniker during a committee hearing in 2001.
From her new website:
A witness was respectfully responding to a legislator’s questions with the term, “Sir” The legislator interrupted him and degraded him saying, “Don’t call me sir, I’m Representative.” Later in the hearing when a witness was answering my questions and addressing me as “Representative”, I interrupted him and said, “You don’t have to call me Representative, I’m just Jane.”
“In a time when office holders sometimes think too hefty of themselves, and even consider themselves above the law,” Cunningham adds, “I’m just Jane.”
