Gaffe attack: Ashcroft latest to make Obama-Osama slip

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

It’s happened again - another speaker inserting “Osama” when talking about Barack Obama.

This time the offender was former Missouri governor and U.S. Senator John Ashcroft, who was addressing students at Skidmore College in upstate New York last week.

The ex-Attorney General was apparently trying to compliment Obama on voting for the Patriot Act, but switched a letter and invoked the name of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden instead.

“I did not mean - I’m sorry. I apologize publicly to him,” said Ashcroft, whose gaffe elicited a chorus of boos from the student audience.

Ashcroft also poked fun at himself, according to the Albany Times Union, telling the crowd he is “the only person in the history of the universe ever to lose his Senate seat to a deceased opponent,” referring, of course, to the death of Mel Carnahan.

A hat tip to PubDef for the link.

This was no accident.

Yes, because Darren knows John Ashcroft SOOO well!

There are many people that have made that slip. It’s really no different than calling one of your friends by another friend’s name. They’re VERY close in spelling and pronunciation.

Um … you DO have more than one friend, don’t you, Darren?

Naive much, Jim?
How many people have called you Jim Laden? Or Jim the Retardican?
Sure it can happen. Repubs seem to make this particular slip almost as often as they say “interrogation” when they mean “torture” or “slight dip” when they mean “deep recession.”

This Osama crap is so childish and immature. Of course it was not a mistake.

Osama Bin Laden is not even on the minds and never was on the minds of any of those who were involved in plotting this war.

What a pathetic joke these people would be if it were not so sad and they were not so destructive and dangerous.

I agree with some of the above. This is happen way too often to be considered a simple “slip of the tongue”. It really appears to be a concerted effort by the Republicans to try to link a possibly Democratic nominee to something not only foreign and Islamic, but to a terrorist.
But, then again, if you have 8 years of failed leadership of Bush as the example to run on as a Republican, fear may be your best weapon/strategy.

I’m an Obama supporter and actually believe this one is a legitimate mistake. He was trying to praise the man for a vote he made, and was clearly immediately embarrassed by his error. It isn’t the same as calling Jim “the Retardican” because “Retadican” hasn’t been on the tip of everyone’s tounge for the past seven years.

The one that is inexcusable and blatant is when people call him Barack Hussein Obama with emphasis on his middle name to relate it to the Tyrant from Iraq.

Things are going along just as I planned… The infestation of American idiocracy has perpetuated itself exponentially and has firmly taken hold of the 2 major regions known as the “mid-west” and “south”… As the mentally retarded offspring of incestuous parents bicker over the importance of patriotism over free-thought and deserving criticism of one’s own government, they fail to realize that it is already too late for any turnaround! And I must admit it was far easier than my involvement in the extinction of the dinosaurs! Those American fools only needed the false election of a mentally challenged presidential candidate! Despite obvious and overwhelming evidence to the contrary, they all just sat back and watched as their government was overthrown by the retarded offspring of Satan himself!… Pathetic. The brilliant part was how I managed to convince the fundamental Christians that their “Elected Leader” was somehow an advocate of their cause! Ha! Although flawed, my 2nd attempt at creating ‘the perfect creation’ was much improved over my first attempt at using carnivorous lizards… (What was I thinking?) Although unfortunately naive and barbaric, Humans did prove to identify the mistakes I made as I prepare for my 3rd and final creation… the perfect creation… I promise to perform my ‘Thetan-to-being’ calculation correctly this time guys! How was I supposed to know there were going to be so many of you F’ers! Everyone makes mistakes!

It is amazing to me the hypocracy of most of you people. You are so set on a Republican conspiracy that you miss the fact that people make mistakes. It is obvious that Darren01 and D. Walker are the type of pathetic morons to point out the flaws of the last 8 years but have nothing useful or constructive to say about it. There you go, sit on your high horse and preach the evils of being Republican while doing nothing while talking up someone who is still unproven in politics. Do this country a favor and get out of it!

Um, your article is wrong. Obama didn’t vote for the Patriot Act - he wasn’t even in the U.S. Senate when it was voted on. Please correct.
