Gephardt’s alter-ego: The caped crusader?
Jake Wagman
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

At Saturday night’s Jefferson-Jackson dinner, honoree Dick Gephardt confessed to having a face that many Americans know - though they are sometimes not quite sure from where.

Gephardt acknowledged he has been mistaken for the weather man, and even Dan Quayle.

The most recent mix-up, Gephardt told the crowd at the state Democratic Party’s annual gala, came at the Atlanta airport, after a security agent began staring quizzically at the former presidential candidate.

“I’ve been trying to remember who you are,” the agent told Gephardt. “And I finally remembered.”

“I said, Who am I?” Gephardt replied.

“She said, ‘You played Batman in the last Batman movie,’” Gephardt recalled.

My guess is that instead of confusing Gephardt with Christian Bale — the 34-year-old actor who is the latest to portray the mythical Gotham defender — the airport worker probably mistook Gephardt for Adam West, who starred in the original Batman movie in 1966.

West, 79, is closer to a contemporary of Gephardt, 67, and shares more than a passing resemblance to the retired congressman.
