Gunn gets his shot

The Senate just approved the appointment of Kevin Gunn to the Public Service Comission.

Debate on the appointment took only about 20 minutes, much shorter than the first time senators considered the appointment.

“I think the points have been made,” said Sen. Frank Barnitz, D-Lake Spring.

Democrats were miffed with Gov. Matt Blunt appointed Gunn, who had been their star candidate to replace outgoing Sen. Michael Gibbons, R-Kirkwood.

Since then, the party has breathed a sigh of relief because it was able to recruit Steve Eagleton, the nephew of late U.S. Sen. Tom Eagleton, to run in Gunn’s place.

The Public Service Commission regulates many of the state’s utilities.

Before senators finally confirmed Gunn, Senate Minority Leader Maida Coleman, D-St. Louis, said she’s concerned about a “corporate type of environment” that could come from all five of the board members being attorneys.

“Nothing wrong with attorneys,” she said. “But should everybody on that board be an attorney?”
