UPDATED: Harris joins Steelman campaign, woos fee-office operators
State Treasurer Sarah Steelman announced this morning that she has added “prominent Republican consultant James Harris as a political advisor” to her campaign for governor.
Harris had been a key operative for Gov. Matt Blunt, first with his campaign and later in his official office.
Harris has been tied to several of the governor’s more controversial activities, including Blunt’s privatizing of the state’s fee office branches. Early in the administration, Harris also oversaw many of the governor’s appointments, including who got awarded those fee-office licenses. (Harris’ grandmother, for one.)
UPDATE: And today, Harris sought to renew his ties to some of those fee-office operators by sending them an email that highlighted a recent KCStar blog about Steelman’s GOP rival, U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof of Columbia, Mo., who has proposed changes in how fee offices are awarded.
The email begins:
“Friends -
“Please do NOT forward. I think Hulshof’s continual flip flop demonstrates that he has become a DC politician and unable to be a conservative agent for change.
“Here is a quote from Hulshof’s top person regarding fee offices. ‘Under a Hulshof administration, zero consideration will be given to political support,’ (Scott) Baker said. Hulshof is opening himself up for Democrat attacks. He should be talking about tax cuts, social conservative issues or innovative ways to make government more efficient, not this.
Hope all is well.”
The email’s apparent unspoken message: Steelman will be more sympathetic to the political ties of fee-office operators, so donate to her campaign instead. Hulshof has received about $30,000 from various fee-office operators, prior to his proposed changes.
(Back to original post) Harris’ hiring signals a split among the GOP operatives tied to Blunt, since several — including John Hancock — are working for Hulshof.
But there’s been talk for months that Hulshof wasn’t keen on adding Harris to his operation.
In her release, Steelman “praised Harris’s success as a campaign operative and grassroots strategist saying Harris would ‘bring the kind of knowledge, experience and strategic contacts that will help Sarah Steelman get her message to hard working Missourians all across the state.’
Here’s more:
“Harris cited Steelman’s commitment to conservative values as reasons for signing with her campaign. According to Harris, ‘Treasurer Steelman is ideally positioned to continue Governor Blunt’s legacy of job creation, respect for life and traditional marriage, and a commitment to main street values.
” ‘She is a dedicated social conservative who understands that strong families are the backbone of Missouri as well as a strong fiscal conservative who believes in economic freedom as the foundation of prosperity. Sarah will do more than any other candidate in the field to unite Missourians from all backgrounds and regions of the state. We are entering a challenging time for our economy, and will be in great need of leaders who will live by Alexander Hamilton’s maxim that ‘power over a man’s subsistence amounts to a power over his will.’
” ‘I am confident Treasurer Steelman will ensure taxes on Missourians stay low because she recognizes that important financial decisions should be made by our families and not by bureaucrats in Jefferson City.”
“The Steelman campaign cited Harris’s experience winning contentious primaries and his experience as one of Governor Matt Blunt’s top campaign operative as reasons for bringing Harris to the team. According to campaign spokesperson Doug Gaston, ‘James did a tremendous job of turning out voters for Matt Blunt in 2004, and had put together an impressive operation for Blunt’s re-election campaign. We look forward to his leadership.’ ”

This is a pretty good sign for Steelman. Harris is a fantastic fundraiser and keen political strategist. This is going to be a very exciting primary.
This is a good sign for Steelman. Harris is a fantastic fundraiser and keen political strategist. If I were Hulshof, I’d start getting worried. This is going to be a very exciting primary.
Thank goodness Sarah Steelman hired a skilled conservative strategist like James Harris. Hulshof should be worried.
Yes, James Harris did a great job with State Auditor Sandra Thomas’s campaign…we hope he does as well with Steelmans.
Yup, nice addition for Team Steelman. It breaks the common wisdom that you had to support Kenny if you supported Blunt.
Ah yes, what Post Dispatch story about Mr. Harris wouldn’t be complete without the usual worn-out accusations and innuendo about supposed scandals that were never scandals, good to see that our friends in ‘the fourth estate’ are anything if not creatures of habit!!! I think the fact that Treasurer Steelman has had the political foresight to bring on an experienced campaign hand like James Harris, somebody whom I would remind everybody got Matt Blunt elected Governor, shows that she’s the only serious candidate in this race. Unlike some folks in this race who continue to rely on DC consultants and lobbyists to help ‘direct’ their campaigns, people who know more about Washington and New York than Saint Louis and Kansas City, Sarah has shown she knows that the best way to ensure a victory in the Governor’s Race come November is to have folks around you who’ve ‘been there’ before. Mr. Harris’ addition to the campaign can only bode good things for Treasurer Steelman, I say Run Sarah Run!!!
Hmmm… Harris Finds Work?
John McCain and Hulshof were wise to take a pass on this one. Had Blunt also taken the pass he might be running for re-election.
I’ve always liked Sarah Steelman, I hope he serves Sarah better than his last employer. I could be that Harris has learned his lesson and understands what it really means to “serve” a campaign or elected official.
And his first official act working for the campaign was to send a confidential email to fee office operators that ended up on the Post Dispatch website. Are you sure this is such a good hire? No wonder other pols wouldn’t touch Harris with a ten foot pole after the Governor decided not to run.
Harris has found another client to fleece, pure and simple… and please don’t forget his very close ties to convicted state representative Nathan Cooper.
Conservative Guy: What are you talking about? Steelman was the one who had D.C. insider and Clinton tool Dick Morris come and stump for her. She also was the one that “hired” but forgot to pay McAuliffe Message Media, another D.C. insider and Public Opinion Strategies yet a third non Missouri entity for her campaign. But getting to the topic of the post, it only took Harris about 12 hours to fit in with the camp by implying political cronyism will flourish under Steelman. And that was one day after it was revealed that the Treasurer was steering state money to the bank that has her husband as a board member which of course is all less than a week after $92K a year Doug made his “poor man’s” contribution to the campaign. Maybe Steelman’s campaign is like a fraternity, they rush their hires by making them do something stupid to prove loyalty to the campaign.
