Jeremiah Wright revisited
Earlier this spring, there was a good deal of discussion everywhere about the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Sen. Barack Obama’s former and long-time pastor. We heard plenty here Political Fix and elsewhere on STLtoday.com.
The fallout for Obama’s campaign lasted for weeks, even after Obama’s response in a lengthy speech on race. (For the record, one YouTube clip of that speech has been viewed 4.3 million times since it was added a little more than a month ago.)
Given that kind of attention, I’m a little surprised that Wright’s interview last week on PBS with Bill Moyers and subsequent appearances aren’t getting more hits on the web.
In fact, Wright speaking out still is drawing less traffic on YouTube than the GOP ad from North Carolina tying Wright and Obama to Democrats running for governor. (This is the ad campaign that is drawing serious flak from both Democrats as well as Republicans nationally, including Sen. John McCain.)
Still, the entire issue is bound to find its way to the spotlight again, as Wright continues to speak out, most recently at the National Press Club this morning. Wright specifically says his critics are really after his faith and black church traditions that were under attack.
I’m posting the four parts to the interview Wright gave to PBS below. Take the time to watch them, and then offer your thoughts.

Wright said: “I served six years in the military. Does that make me patriotic? How many years did (Vice President Dick) Cheney serve?”
BINGO
What more does Rev. Wright need to say? On April 7, 1775 the famous American Patriot, Samuel Johnson, said that the cries of patriotism are the last refuges of the scoundrel.
And, John McCain is an anti-Catholic bigot!

I heard many of the recent remarks of the Reverend, and think I understand what he said and why he said it, and how he may feel. His questions and answers at the speech confirms to me, that he’s still a jerk. Horse’s butt seemed a little strong. Appropriate, perhaps, but still strong. Just because you may be technically right in some ways doesnt mean you’re not a self-righteous silly sanctimonious somewhat hypocritical and pompous and unfairly judgmental jerk. Just a thought.
ps in a nutshell, he’s no Calypso Louie Farahkan, Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton, let alone other even more charasmatic and inspirational black orators, preachers and leaders.
Shouldnt necessarily be a reflection on Barack, however.
If its not a reflection on Barack, why does Barack think of Wright as his Uncle and spiritual advisor?
Rev. Wright has now thrown Barack under the bus. He called him just another typical politician that will say anyhing he has to in order to get elected. Imagine that!
Bill Haas,
A jerk? The media has been the jerks taking the majority of Wrights sermons out of context.
Funny, when African Americans are confident, many in the status quo sees it as arrogant.
Funny, when African Americans are not a–kissers, and pleasers for the status quo, they are seen as self-righteous silly sanctimonious somewhat hypocritical and pompous and unfairly judgmental jerks.
But worst, is the nerve of the world to sit back and judge a minister for speaking God’s truth, and for pointing out social evils that the U.S. has committed.
Until scripture is inscribed into ones heart, I would suggest that one restrain themselves from judgement concerning spiritual matters.
Rev. Wright is being demonized in the media for saying God d—America.
When angry for just causes, Christians/Saints have pleaded with God to damn/condemn others and countries.
Saints (all those who truly love and live by God’s truth) despise and hate injustices and evil so much that we get so fed up and disgusted with all the injustices on this earth, we sometimes call out to God to hurry up and bring judgment on this earth, as we can see in scripture, in the Book of Revelations where it is prophesied that even the Saints in Heaven is shown will do.
This tells me that it is a natural emotion of God’s children (Saints) even on this earth presently. God does not judge such emotion as being sinful. I imagine it is because, one is seeking out God to do justice and judge and not ourselves seeking our own justice and revenge. As shown in scripture below:
(Revelation 6:9:11)
Then the Lamb broke open the fifth seal. I saw underneath the alter the souls of those who had been killed because they had proclaimed God’s word and had been faithful in their witnessing. They shouted in a loud voice, Almighty God, holy and true! How long will it be until you judge the people on the earth and punish them for killing us? Each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to rest a little while longer, until the complete number of other servants and believers were killed, as they had been.
Do you think God’s children on earth now are any different? King David and others in Old Testament also sought out God to bring judgment upon evil people and governments.
In too many churches if the body is made to feel uncomfortable, even the preaching of a simple truth such as fornication is sin against the body and God, and such sin separates one from a relationship with God most can’t bare to hear this truth and would leave the church because they want to feel comfortable in their sins. Churches everywhere are selling out God and Christ in order to keep their large membership.
It is not surprising however that the world feels this way about Rev. Wright because the world have always rejected truth and have always ridiculed God’s messengers of social truths, Martin Luther King, and many, many others. The most famous one was Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
We all realize that the world considered Jesus Christ and his followers demon possessed nut cases, don’t we? Well, nothing has changed much even this present day.
Calling Rev. Wright unpatriotic and one who does not love his country is like saying a parent hates their own child if they were to hand them over for to the law for punishment upon learning that they were guilty of a murder or some other serious crime. We must not condone or sweep under the rug, no one’s evils, not this country or even our own children, doing such only creates monsters.
A CENTRIST,
Rev. Wright has not thrown Obama under any bus. That is just the spin the media is attempting to give it.
The dominant culture in this world resists change. They cannot accept a black man being a contender for the presidency and although this man has a very well educated background comes from many cultures in his family, a very eloquent speaker and has the experience to possibly do a very good job for this country and make the necessary changes for all classes of people, and this dominant culture wants “business as usual”. Well, go ahead and vote for the same business as usual. Your GAS prices is going to go up to $10 a gallon, no health care for your elderly and children, your houses will be foreclosed upon because it will be to expensive to pay, they will take your pensions on your jobs, they will ship your jobs overseas, they will impose more taxes on food so you cannot afford it, your sons and daughters will die in this war that will continue - who knows how long. You will not be able to afford college for your children and you want be able save and leave an inheritence to your next generation. So when you want change in this country, you want find none.
Wow. I didn’t know this country was so terrible, Pat Mitchell. I guess I’m headed to Canada where everything is just peachy.
TO AMAZED BY THE LUNACY. DO YOU READ AND STUDY WHAT’S GOING ON IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT OR DO YOU RELY ON SOUND BITES.
Fair and smart points, D. Walker.
My environment is pretty good where I sit. I have a roof over my head, more food than I need, a great wife, 2 great kids, money being invested for my retirement that I control. I’ll be turkey hunting later this week and fishing everyday that the weather allows. Yup life is pretty damn good here.
Man life is sweet…it only costs me $4.00 to travel 20 miles and my milk is only $4 bucks and lasts 4 days before it spoils. My house depreciated $20,000 this past 30 days according to zillow. The stock market has been down 8% so far this year. CD’s are earning 2-4% wow! Doesn’t get much sweeter than that!
Bush said on this evening’s news “if I had a magic wand I’d swing it to bring gas prices down, but it’s just not that easy”.
Amazed, do you and the little missus need any help packing? I’d rather have you voting in Canada.
He’s too busy huntin’ to answer.
Everything is short term for you knuckleheads. My stock portfolio is up 100% over the last 5 years, including the downturn of about 10% in the first quarter of this year. That’s a 20% average for you short bus riders.
My wife and I will spend an extra grand on gas this year on 3.50 versus 2.50 gallon. Awe shucks I guess I’ll have to starve.
My house can depreciate as much as it wants to because it isn’t for sale. Maybe my assessment will go down as well and the money I save on the taxes can go for gas.
Here’s an idea for you constant complainers. There are men and women in danger zones right now that haven’t seen their families for maybe 12-15 months. I can guarantee you that they would love to be in your situation right now where they can sit around and complain about the price of gas.
TO # 16, LET THE STOCK MARKET CRASH, LET THE BANKING INSTITUTIONS GO OUT OF BUSINESS, AND LET THE ROOF FALL IN. WHO CARES.
#16 Your “portfolio” is not up at all- - - LIAR!
The years 2001. 2002, 2003 had moderate gains across the board averaging a 6-8% return on investment. The years 2004-2008 have experienced losses due to the sub-prime mortgage backed pension funds that are in crisis. The stock market has been at the 12000 mark for years now- not much of a gain now is it.
Why are you so worried about a little tax assessment decrease on an investment- your house- if you are doing so peachy?? You have to rationalize that small decrease in tax asessment-which will never occur- to pay for an extra $1,000 a year for gas. Sounds like you’re pretty bad off yourself.
Then you shouldn’t worry about the price of gasoline when it hits $5.00 a gallon and remains at that price or higher as analysts predict.
Can’t wait for Amazed’s little stock portfolio to CRASH any day now…….Then we’ll watch him starve! Yippee!
If you take my port back 10 years(I’ve been in for only 8 and only really heavy beginning in 02) It has averaged about 9-10%. The bulk of my money went in in 2002. Do you knuckleheads remember where we were in 02? Dow Jones was at about 7230. As we speak it is at 12969. The 30 stocks in the Dow are up collectively 79% in the last 5 almost 6 years.
Tell me Paul, Scott, or any of the other short bussers, when has the market ever completely went to zero? When the markets drop, I increase my 401k contributions, make sure my Roth is funded, put money in my kids mutual funds, and wait for better days.
You short-bussers complain about the President. Who’s the idiot?
Amazed you are the idiot - big deal a Roth - tiny amounts every year can only be contributed. Where is that 20% a year? Now, it’s 9% a year. You are so ignorant to not know the Stock Market will not go to zero. When it was at 7900 it had been at 10000 years prior to that low mark, now it’s just trying to make up for all those huge losses. Who are you kidding? Yourself only.
Maybe the short bus you so commonly refer to did not help you out much at all and you had better try taking some college courses or return to high school to receive your GED.

Which is it 9-10% or 20% a year? Do you know the difference between the number 9, 10, and 20? I think not. Let me explain: the difference is 100% or double. Poor feeble-minded short-bus rider. Maybe th fumes got to your brain from sitting in the back of the short-bus.
LIARS CAN NEVER REMEMBER THEIR PREVIOUS LIES HENCE THE CONTRADICTIONS !!

Compound Annual Growth Rate (Annualized Return)
A problem with talking about average investment returns is that there is real ambiguity about what people mean by “average”. For example, if you had an investment that went up 100% one year and then came down 50% the next, you certainly wouldn’t say that you had an average return of 25% = (100% - 50%)/2, because your principal is back where it started: your real annualized gain is zero.
In this example, the 25% is the simple average, or “arithmetic mean”. The zero percent that you really got is the “geometric mean”, also called the “annualized return”, or the “CAGR” for Compound Annual Growth Rate.
Volatile investments are frequently stated in terms of the simple average, rather than the CAGR that you actually get. (Bad news: the CAGR is smaller.)
Average r: %
True CAGR: %
Standard Deviation: %
$1.00 grew to: $
(These returns are just capital gains, not dividends; if you owned an S&P 500 index fund with low fees you would have made more money than this.)
Note that 2000-2002 really was as bad as it felt, destroying about as much wealth as 1973-1974: in both of those periods one dollar “grew” to about sixty cents. On the other hand, the ten year period from January 1993 through December 2002 still delivered an annualized return of 7.29 percent, far more than inflation. So maybe the new economy isn’t really dead, and we just have to learn to pace ourselves a little…
—–Maybe in thirty years you will get all your principal back, AMAZED if you are still around.—–
OK folks. I’m leaving as they are for now, but lets try to get back on topic. And watch the language.
