Outgoing state House Speaker Rod Jetton, R-Marble Hill, will spend the days after this session ends preparing a speech to deliver May 22 to graduates of the Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff.

College president Dr. John F. Cooper said that Jetton is the spring commencement speaker. It will begin at 7 p.m., in the Bess Activity Center on the TRCC campus.

“We are honored to have Speaker Jetton deliver Three Rivers’ Commencement address during Three River’s 40th anniversary celebration,” said Cooper. “Speaker Jetton has been a truly outstanding leader for Missouri and an advocate for our state’s community colleges. He understands the important role of community colleges in Missouri.”

After the rape of MOHELA by Boy Blunt and fellow republicans in the joke we call the Missouri Legislature, none of these people, Jetton in particular, are qualified to set foot on any college campus; even a community college. I had very little respect for the Missouri Legislature before, now I have none.

As a Poplar Bluff native, I know Three Rivers is a valuable resource to south east Missouri. I was fortunate enough to graduate from high school there and afford to attend Mizzou. I did get 19 hours of dual credit at TRCC before I graduated.

I wonder how many of the TRCC graduates can now go on to get a four year degree after Blunt sold MOHELA and the Republican legislature is holding back great legislation like “Missouri Promise.”

I know roughly 40% of my graduating class planned to attend TRCC, many with a A+ scholarship. Jay Nixon has been touring the state with week touting “Missouri Proimise.” With “Missouri Promise” enacted, those A+ scholars would be able to attend a public, four-year college in Missouri tuition free after obtaining their associates degree.

It would be a great economic boom when those TRCC grads come back to the area with a four year degree. South east Missouri needs it. Last time I checked, the 8th Congressional District was the 14th poorest in the nation.

I wonder if Jetton is getting paid for this as well. It seems everyone else that has legislation before him is paying him. Bob Onder, Jason Crowell, Plaster, ________, you fill in the blank. Bob Griffin wasn’t as obvious as Jetton.
