Kirkwood, Valley Park contests highlight today’s election

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Highlighting today’s otherwise low-key election are contests in two St. Louis County towns that have been divided - one by controversy, the other by tragedy.

Election Day is sure to stir emotions in Kirkwood, where voters will cast their ballot for the first time since the Feb. 7 City Hall shooting. Many residents are sad; some are angry.

Councilwoman Connie Karr, who was killed in the attack, was set to run against Art McDonnell for mayor. Karr’s death left only McDonnell on the ballot, prompting calls that the election should be postponed. That it has not been has raised the ire of residents who believe the deadly shooting exposed a riff in the town that needs to be healed.

Three residents have declared themselves as write-in candidates; one has said he will quit if he gets the nod, so to restart the elections process.

South on I-44, a more quotidian mix of politics and intrigue has enveloped the campaign for mayor in Valley Park. Incumbent Jeffery Whitteaker’s tough stance on immigration has made national news- but its a lawsuit alleging an affair with his secretary that has been the talk of the town.

After the polls close, check out our elections page for live results.

Today, voters in the Mehlville School District will choose between 8 candidates for three seats on the board of directors. Thanks to the lack of media coverage, three candidates are being funded Citizens for Accountable Education.

Citizens for Accountable Education is a PAC. The man running this PAC is Michael Becker of Shrewsbury. He’s a former candidate for the Missouri House of Representatives. This anti-big government, anti-tax fellow runs a state license office in Maplewood.

The money for Citizens for Accountable Education comes from Rex Sinqefield. He funnels the cash through a number of shell organizations designed to circumvent Missouri’s Campaign finance laws. He donates these funds to anti-public school and pro-voucher candidates. State Representative Jim Lembke is one of the lucky candidates in our region.
Mr. Sinquefield’s has around 100 of the PACs. He uses names that have acronyms to confuse voters. The ones he is using for the race for the Mehlville School Board start with MNEA, which voters are supposed to confuse with the Missouri National Education Association. But they are the Missourians Needs Educational Alternatives.

Thank you, Mike. This is a story that desperately needs to be told over and over and over again. These freaks are buying the Missouri General Assembly, and most people will not take the time to connect all of the dots and highlight the deceptions. Until this story is known and understood across this state, people will not understand who is pulling the strings in Jefferson City until our public school system is completely dismantled. Does anyone know how many school-age children Rex Sinquefeld has? Why the profound interest in school vouchers? What is the ultimate goal here?

I think it is disgusting the way the Democrats in Kirkwood have attacked Mr. McDonald. If Dick Reeves wants a challenger so bad because democracy is under attack, then why didn’t he put his butt out their and run.? He is all talk and no action. Mr. McDonald will be up for re-election in a few years. That is the time for the Democrats to find a qualified candidate and vote out Mr. McDonald if he fails the residents of Kirkwood. In the meantime, give the guy a break and see if he does a good job or not. To vilify a man the way Mr. Reeves has vilified Mr. McDonald is not democratic either.

And by the way, I have no choice for mayor or alderman in my local race. So get over it Mr. Reeves.

Dear Centrist,
Please be very clear about what I am going to say to you:

Democrats in Kirkwood have NOT been involved in any organized efforts to attack nor vilify Art McDonald.

As a matter of Fact; I am the Democratic Committeewoman in this area and I have whole heartedly endorsed Mr McDonald and have even worked to get him elected. But NOT in my Committeewoman capacity. I have done so as a nonpartisan Kirkwood resident. And as I have stated repeatedly to any and everyone who would listen, “These are non-partisan elections today.”

Mr Don Reeves is unknown to me except for what I’ve read in the papers. If he is a Democrat, fine, but he should save his partisan verbiage, if any, for the upcoming August and November Elections. He does not speak for Democrats in Kirkwood. He speaks for himself only and from what I understand he still has every right to speak his opinions freely even if I view them as uninformed.
And I might add, he is not the only person in Kirkwood I’ve been reading uniformed opinions attributed to.

Dick Reeves is a Democrat activist as many of Mrs. Carr’s supporters were. For them to attack Mr. McDonald saying that democracy has been usurped is preposterous. Sorry I had to lump you in with those types, but a heard very few voices speaking out supporting that poor man and his willingness to serve his community.

My apologies to you valstar1.

Centrist is right. Let’s just lump together and label. I think all these people were white. Let’s start some comments on how white folks are trying to vilify McDonald.
Wait…aren’t most of those folks catholic. Should we say catholics are trying to harm the reputation of McDonald?
Centrist in your effort to villify Democrats, you have made yourself look silly. Just because some of Ms. Carr’s supporters were Dems does not make this some vast left wing conspiracy.

The reality is that in a lot of these non-partisan municipal elections, you generally have some Dems fighting other Dems and in a few Republicans fighting other Repubs–with neither side actually representing the party’s views or members.
