Love is in the air …

Proving that state senators can have the occasional sense of humor, Sen. Jeff Smith of St. Louis offered a dramatic announcement yesterday on the floor of the Senate that caught the august body by surprise. Right before adjournment for the day, Smith rose to be recognized and told the body some truly shocking news. One of the Democrat’s legislative aides (whose name will not be mentioned to protect the innocent) was just engaged to state Sen. Jason Crowell, a Republican who is about as far on the other side of the ideological fence from Smith as can be imagined. After the senators soaked it in, and Sen. Tom Dempsey of St. Peters – who was presiding at the time — noted that there must be somebody for everybody, Smith let his fellow senators in on the joke.

April fools.

I love Jeff Smith like the misguided sometimes hubris-filled gambling foolish brother that he is (I dont mean that in the bad sense), but I dont think Adam Corolla’s comic career, such as it is, is in any danger. Loveline hasnt been the same without him. Wasnt he supposed to be on Jimmy Kimall? didnt that work out? Letterman appearance good, and he’s great on dancing with the stars; wouldnt mind seeing him replace Conan. If I werent in the middle of an election and afraid of offending someone, I would wonder if Conan has ever considered doing a comedy or entertainment show.

If Smith really wanted to make an great announcement, I have a suggestion: He could announce that he is dropping his effort to dismantle Missouri’s gambling regulations for thepurpose of getting his own behind out of a jam, and working out a deal with the prosecutor, like anyone but a wealthy politician would be forced to do.

What a complete disappointment Smith has been.
