Name-dropping may not signify endorsements

Looking at all the high-powered names hosting Republican Gina Loudon’s fundraiser this Thursday, you might think she had the nomination sewed up in the 7th District Senate race.

For example, co-hosts of the event include President Pro Tem Mike Gibbons and Majority Leader Charlie Shields. Nineteen additional legislators and a bunch of local luminaries also are listed.

But Gibbons, for his part, isn’t making an endorsement. His spokeswoman, Farrah Fite, said Gibbons has offered to headline fundraisers for all three Republican candidates in the race. The other two are Reps. Jane Cunningham and Neal St. Onge.

“He’s lending his support, if that helps them, equally,” Fite said.

The event Thursday is hosted by Amy and Mark Dunn at Dunn & Miller PC in Chesterfield. Donations sought range from $100 for a guest to $675 for a “platinum sponsor.”

There’s at least one co-host who won’t be neutral: Loudon’s husband, John Loudon, who holds the Senate seat now and is leaving because of term limits.

Haas ‘08, you’re wrong … I definitely won’t be voting Democrat, and almost never have.

Enough - I named house members because butcherfan92 said, “I didn’t realize that State Rep. was entry level.” But since you brought it up, the following senators never served in the house: Victor Callahan, D-11, Dan Clemens R-20, Jolie Justus D-10, Chris Koster D-31, Gary Nodler R-32, Jeff Smith D-Casino, and Bill Stouffer R-21. I will give Nodler a pass because he is exceptionally qualified in spite of this. But the rest of them are basically entry-level politicians.

Why do people find this blog a place to bash others, call names, and say downright ugly things about other human beings, all of whom deserve a bit of respect?
It would be nice if this discussion evolved into discussing the merits of each candidate (they all have some, regardless of the hatred that some people seem to feel towards certain ones), rather than thinking of uglier statements to out do the last poster.

I think all three of the Republican candidates in the 7th district are nice and qualified people. Each one of them will bring a unique set of strengths and weaknesses to the office. We’d do everyone a lot of good if we discussed the actual merits and disadvantages of the candidates, since obviously one of the three will win in a heavily Republican district.

And a side note on the midwives bill - I’ve heard that Senator Loudon never implied that the midwife stuff wasn’t in the bill. He just highlighted some of the major changes in the insurance parts that people were arguing about, then answered questions. Nobody had any questions about the midwife section. The senators never bothered to read the bill. They pass a lot of stuff that way. It went through the same process in the House. Not a single House member read the bill before the passed it the next day.

Maybe the legislature should be required to read the bills they pass. Then things like Jetton’s village law wouldn’t end up in the law, either.

You named seven Nick… Since you won’t let it go and seem to have time to spare what about the other 25+? You’re proving my point with every post. But I will tip my hat on the Jeff Smith reference. We’ll just agree to disagree. Either way it’s nice to debate with you.

And to add something Justin, Loudon’s midwifery bill was shot down days before he decided to slip in language about midwifery to a massive healthbill. I agree legislators should read more but deceit and lying is unacceptable. To hide his deed he used a word which is all but forgotten in modern English to describe midwifery “Tocological Professionals” because he knew midwifery would raise a flag. The kicker is since he didn’t know what the word meant he inadvertently tried to legalize abortion to non licensed professionals

Bellow is a quote from Senator Graham who is respected by both sides, “He showed this whole session that he’s a lying snake,” Graham added. “And for him to get up there today with this piousness and pretend he would have been honest with anybody is absurd. He lied to everybody in the process. And he has put small businesses and people who work for small businesses that need health care… he has put their health care in jeopardy.”

And here is Missouri Right to life’s take, “Unfortunately, because of the drafter’s choice of language in the amendment, including the use of a term that has been all but forgotten in the English language–’tocological’–the new provision can be exploited to allow abortions to be performed by non-physicians,” said Right to Life president Pam Fichter

Straight Dem - On the contrary, if nearly 1/3 of them have never served in the house, I’ve established that it is acceptable to go that way. I’m not saying that it’s the norm, just that it isn’t as unusual as some are making it out to be.

I must say, though, you gave me a good laugh when you said that Senator Graham “is respected by both sides.” This is the guy who, according to media reports, drove drunk, refused to take a breathalyzer test, and demanded immediate medical attention. Then, when he got to the ER, which by some coincidence was staffed by a friendly physician, they delayed long enough that a sobriety test was impossible. And, he, with the assistance of hospital staff, physically obstructed and threatened to attack a cop who was trying to take his urine for testing. I don’t know how much people respected him before this incident, but I can assure you that the respect is pretty much gone now. DWI: common, if serious, mistake. His conduct after the DWI: arrogant and outrageous. And the sad thing is, Graham is paralyzed from an auto accident when he was 16. If anyone should know better about driving drunk, it is Mr. Graham.

Details on Graham’s hospital confrontation are here:

Right…. but the quote above and the midwifery scandal occured prior to the almost DWI. So close but no cigar
