Name-dropping may not signify endorsements
Virginia Young

Looking at all the high-powered names hosting Republican Gina Loudon’s fundraiser this Thursday, you might think she had the nomination sewed up in the 7th District Senate race.

For example, co-hosts of the event include President Pro Tem Mike Gibbons and Majority Leader Charlie Shields. Nineteen additional legislators and a bunch of local luminaries also are listed.

But Gibbons, for his part, isn’t making an endorsement. His spokeswoman, Farrah Fite, said Gibbons has offered to headline fundraisers for all three Republican candidates in the race. The other two are Reps. Jane Cunningham and Neal St. Onge.

“He’s lending his support, if that helps them, equally,” Fite said.

The event Thursday is hosted by Amy and Mark Dunn at Dunn & Miller PC in Chesterfield. Donations sought range from $100 for a guest to $675 for a “platinum sponsor.”

There’s at least one co-host who won’t be neutral: Loudon’s husband, John Loudon, who holds the Senate seat now and is leaving because of term limits.
