No hoax: Ad man’s wife running for State House

Coming soon to a campaign near you - viral politics?

Perhaps, if you’re in Creve Couer, where Councilwoman Jill Schupp, a Democrat, is seeking the State House seat being vacated by Sam Page, who is running for lieutenant governor.

Schupp is the wife of ad man Mark Schupp, who has shown a knack for grabbing headlines with deceptive, er, I mean, innovative promotions.

The Schupp Co. specializes in viral marketing, which uses the Internet, word of mouth and other unconventional means to reach consumers.

Their portfolio includes the 2006 “bird napping” from Cardinal billboards around town. The caper was solved when the cutouts migrated to KTRS billboards, highlighting the station’s debut as the the ball club’s flagship carrier.

The firm, based downtown, also helped the Blues launch a fan “revolution” after Dave Checketts bought the team in 2005.

And, from the way-back machine, Schupp is credited with helping create the persona for Budweiser’s Spuds MacKenzie, the original party animal.

Could Schupp’s alternative ad tactics spread to his wife’s bid for the legislature?

Either way, Jill Schupp may have a challenging campaign in front of her.

Though she has no primary opponent, in November she’ll face one of a pair of seasoned Republicans - Terry Frank, a former Frontenac alderman, or Frank Plescia, a lobbyist for Monsanto.

Could viral marketing like this work in a political campaign?

Creve Coeur has become more democratic over the last several years. Specifically, if the republican candidates take the party line positions on social issues, this race will be Schupp’s to lose.

SouthCountyProgressive - Creve Coeur has been Democratic for a long time. I lived there ten years ago, and especially in the portion east of 270, it was quite Democratic. Outside of 270, rather more Republican. But on the balance, certainly not your typical west county Republican stronghold.

Indeed, the seat is currently in Democratic hands. Slightly different configurations of the district went back and forth between the parties prior to Page’s win, David Levin being the most recent Republican to hold the seat.

Frank Plescia is not a “seasoned” Republican –
he’s a lobbyist who contributed $500 to Democrat Claire McCaskill and $500 to Democrat Russ Carnahan. And that makes him a “rotten” Republican to those of us who worked hard to re-elect Senator Jim Talent and elect David Bertelsen, to Congress.
I think either Schupp put him up to this or filed under the wrong party. As far as Frank goes he has been working as long as Schupp and at least calls the party with his intentions.

I knew this district well… Though I don’t know it’s new configuration as well as I might.

I Republican CAN win there… a ‘good’ Republican… one that has the majority view on social issues, yet doesn’t wear them on their sleeve.

The district has high income, a large group of Catholics, and an older demographic… all good things for the GOP.

A Republican running a smart campaign CAN win

Hey, the GOP doesn’t like Catholics, why is their presence helpful?

“He is credited for helping to create the persona of Spuds Mackenzie’? Only Mark Schupp credits Mark Schupp for creating the persona of Spuds Mackenzie. Did he ever hear of a woman named Mitch Meyers, who was the Bud Light Brand Manager and who brought the Party Animal concept to reality? Afraid Mark is delving in revisionist history here.

As a moderate GOP, who recently lived in this district, I suppose a Republican could win, but neither of these candidates can or will. One of the GOP candidates is a big business lobbyist (he will obviously support all of Monsanto’s genetically-engineered product initiatives and legislation) with absolutely no local political experience and the other ran for statewide office under the Reform party banner. This is the best the team in Jeff City could come up with? Come on team.

Regardless, Jill Schupp is as good as you will find. She is smart, passionate, an extremely hard worker, organized to a fault and highly moral and ethical. While I do not agree with her on every issue, I know that she will do what is best for the district and the state. She is a deeply caring person and will improve the entire Mo House. Obviously, I am a big fan of hers because I have seen her in action. Keep an eye on this young lady. She is good and she is going places.

Dave you sound like those on Rush Limbaugh’s show that say they are republicans but vote for Hillary.
Jill is nothing more than Hillary with dark hair. Ladue schools sell more drugs than city schools.
Frank Plascia is a Smith/Page/Schupp Plant to waste TF’s money .
Dave,I suggest you stay on firedup com.
As for Frank I suggest that you do your homework and know that Frank ran as a McCain Reformer. Who’s are nominee now? McCain
Dave Dave Dave are you really a republican? If so you sure need to do your homework.
