Piercings “painful” for Rep. Jane Cunningham
State Rep. Jane Cunningham of Chesterfield is coming under fire for her alleged shabby treatment of gay and lesbian students who were in the Capitol last week to lobby for an anti-bullying bill. According to the students, 16-year-old Desiree Bain and 19-year-old Austyn Langston, they were kicked out of Cunningham’s office because of their appearance. Both Bain, a lesbian, and Langston, a bisexual, have multiple piercings. Langston also has purple hair.
“We were polite,” Bain says. “We were introducing ourselves and in the middle of saying my name and she told us to get out. She told us we were making her physically ill to look at. She said she didnt understand why we didn’t hate ourselves.”
Cunningham said today that she doesn’t deny asking the students to leave. And she admits that she found “their appearance very painful to look at.” But Cunningham says she only asked the students to leave because they weren’t her constituents. Both Bain and Langston are from Kansas City. Cunningham says she asked them to sign in and they represented that they were her constituents.
“They told us they were constituents,” she said. “They got in here under false pretenses.”
Not so, say both Bain and Langston. They say they told Cunningham they were from Kansas City.
“She told us we couldn’t be in her office because she was offended by us,” Langston said.
The students were in the Capitol on Wednesday to lobby for an anti-bullying bill being sponsored by Rep. Sara Lampe of Springfield. The bill would alter a law supported by Cunningham that passed two years ago which required schools to develop anti-bullying policies. Lampe wants to see the law specifically address bullying against students because of sexual orientation.
Langston and Bain said they went to see Cunningham because of her position as chairwoman of the House Elementary and Secondary Education Committee.
This is not the first time Cunningham has made a name for herself when dealing with gay and lesbian issues. In 2003, she accused former Kirkwood High School principal Franklin S. McCallie of rallying St. Louis County voters to vote against Christian candidates. McCallie was testifying in favor of a similar bill at that time.
Cunningham is also the sponsor of the Emily Brooker Intellectual Diversity Act which aims to hold universities accountable for allowing students to hold diverse opinions.

Tony - Welcome to the Post-Dispatch.
And to Jane Cunningham, if you can’t look your enemy in the eye you will never pass the Commander-in-Chief threshold test.
More of that “Compassionate Conservatism”. Bain and Langston should have offered Cunningham a campaign contribution. It’s about time for a new car….isn’t it Jane?
WWJD?
“WWJD?”
Well, according to Jane Cunningham, Jesus would say “Ooh, yuck. You lepers are too gross. Go away before I get nauseous. No miracles for you. Ick!”
Tony, how is this an anti-gay/lesbo issue? I don’t see it that way at all. I find it refreshing that Mrs. Cunningham would be honest about being offended by someone’s horrendous appearance. I have been in that situation myself and have almost gotten physically ill by someone else’s grotesque appearance and I have no idea what their sexual orientation is. On the other hand, I have many gay/lesbo friends and relatives who are perfectly lovely and decent looking people who don’t feel like they have to exploit their sexuality by being walking freak shows.
Perhaps these two idiots can take this as a “teaching moment” and realize that they will have trouble one day getting jobs for their outrageous appearances, which is perfectly fine and legal, but it is something they will have to deal with. This is simply a fact of our culture. Perhaps they might think of moving to San Fransisco where this is more acceptable. My taxes will probably be supporting these two idiots some day because they are also probably frying their brains as we write.
Again, this was not about their sexual preference. I applaud Mrs. Cunningham for her courageous behavior. Thanks for the info and I will be sending her a campaign donation for doing so even though she is not my state senator, but I hate mine (Joan Bray) so I will support Mrs. Cunningham.
No doubt your “friends’ love it when you call them “lesbos”.
But hey, at least you’re open-minded enough to assume that a 16-year-old girl taking time to lobby the legislature is probably on drugs, is an “idiot” and ought to just move to San Francisco.
How truly “Centrist” of you.
Centrist is right to a point. That their orientation should not have been an issue. But, who is Jane Cunningham to throw someone out of a taxpayer paid office because she doesn’t like their physical appearance?!
What if this was a grotesquely disfigured victim of a drunk driver who wanted to lobby for stiffer DUI/DWI penalites?
What is this was a special needs child whose mother was there to lobby for more funding for such children?
All may be unpleasant to look at, but what really is the difference? Yes, these two young adults made the choice to look the way they do. But, aren’t conservatives about free choice on various issues. Oh wait–but maybe that is only when they like the choices people have made.
I’ve seen Jane Cunningham. She is noone to kick out anyone for their looks, as some seem to have just as much disrepect for older, wrinkled women as pierced teens. Though I am sure folks like Centrist will applaud her for showing disrespect to Missouri citizens–justified because they are different in some sort of way.
Centrist -
So you applaud someone in her capacity - the Chair of the Education Committee - making a statement which is essentially bullying to a student - merely because she didn’t like their appearance?
Sometimes I think you write things like that in order to do nothing but rile people. You can’t tell me you honestly believe a legislator should tell students that they make her physically ill?
And as far as the two students go - come on, just because they don’t meet your standard of appearance doesn’t mean they are not of value to society. They were there lobbying their legislator - when was the last time you cared enough to haul your butt down to Jeff City and actually spend time walking the halls to talk with the people making the decisions?
Centrist,
if you are in the center you might want to rethink that donation. Jane Cunningham is to the right of all the other Republicans running for that seat.
So far as her being honest, if she was honest she would have said, I know this is a lobby day by PROMO and I want to have nothing to do with you. I was in Jeff City that day with a union lobby day and she made it clear that she wants nothing to do with us. I can only imagine what sort of reception Paraquad, who does disability rights advocacy, had from her that day (they were lobbying too). That is fine. But one must wonder, if she wants nothing to do with the people of Missouri, why does she want to be a legislator?
Suzyjax - it would be great if Democrats like you could actually take a course in comparison - your analogy is not comparing apples to apples - this is what you democrats typically do. Someone who chooses to make their body a sideshow is hardly the same as someone who is disfigured in an accident or whatever. Common - you must be ashamed of yourself by now.
Shecky - I’m a centrist and not a PC’r. That is what is great about being a centrist - one is allowed to be a realist and call it the way I see it. I would have said the same thing if it were Jeff Smith. Unfortunately, Democrats are gross panderers. But then again, that’s why they are democrats.
Centrist,
My point was that they were all may be considered “hard to look at”. I even pointed out that the two students had like done their peircings by choice. You know the problem with you non-Democrats is that you never read, or at least fail to comprehend what you read (if we are going to make such broad-based generalizations like you do “centrist”).
You say I’m not comparing apples to apples, I say it is NOT apples to oranges but perhaps Granny Smiths to Red Delicious. Admittedly different, but still apples.
It is noted that you don’t bother to address the point of a state legislator in a taxpayer paid office booting out two Missouri citiizens there to address their government. Which is really the underlying point of this blog post.
Good for you, Centrist, you cheer State Representative Jane for having the courage to kick pierced teens with dyed hair out of her office because they’re gross to look at.
I think you should take it even further!
Fat people should be kicked out too, especially if they’re women. If they’re men, who cares?
Old people who don’t have the decency to love themselves and dye their hair and shoot botox and get facelifts should also be kicked out of her office.
Let’s not forget the cripples, especially if they don’t have any limbs, can you think of anything more disgusting than that?
And if the constituent happens to be stupid enough to wear a Jewish star, they can only stay if they convert on the spot and take the love of Christ into their heart.
I’m being facetious. You’re not. Ass.
A question, Centrist—to the center of whom: Attila the Hun and James Dobson? Sheeeeesh.
Now, to the smarmy Jane-woman. I’m inclined to believe the students, and disinclined to believe the smarmy Jane-woman spin. Her behaviour is unacceptable given her committee assignment and position as chair. Her behaviour is unacceptable as a supposed “christian.” Her phobic behaviour is unacceptable from someone deemed to be rational and fit to hold public office.
I shall do something I’ve never done before: contribute to Republicans…namely her opponents in the 7th district Republican primary. She is truly someone who needs to be “retired” from public office, just as her husband will be come next Jan. 20th.
By the way, Gary, how are all those Gulf Coast logistics coming? Heckuva job, there!
As far as the HONESTY of Rep, Cunningham, on one of her campaign pieces ,she has stated that she is an advisor to the US Secretary of Education. Upon calling the Department of Education and asking of Rep. Cunninghams claim, they toltally DO NOT KNOW HER!!! Rep. Cunningham has time and time again used names of people that she said have endorsed her and many times she had done this WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT OR KNOWLEDGE!!!
Is this the type of person we want in the STATE SENATE. Her slogan could be . . . . .
A LEADERSHIP BUILT ON LIES!!!!
A CENTRIST,
IT IS NEVER APPROPRIATE TO MISTREAT ANYONE BECAUSE OF THEIR APPEARANCE OR OTHERWISE!!!
Nor is it okay to mistreat someone because they are gay, no more than it would be appropriate to mistreat someone for any other reason that we learn as Christians is sin. My God, does any of these ones such as A CENTRIST and Cunningham truly understand why God offered Christ up to be our one last ever needed sacrifice. Who did God do this for? Wasn’t it for these children? And, they were treated this way by one who call themselve a Christian?
Wow, she really is a B!
Wonder how her hubby is taking the resignation of his boss at HUD.
So all of you lefties would sit and listen to people who chose to appear in a manner that is repulsive to you? Yeah, right (or left). You are all full of it. You wouldnt sit and listen to conservatives dressed in a manner you found appalling, you would insult them and tell them to leave. Maybe if they had come dressed in a manner fitting the state capitol, they would have been treated better. Would any of you show up to a job interview looking like what the teens are described as? Not for any professional job you wouldnt.
They weren’t asking Rep. Cunningham for a job. They were at the Capitol to talk to the Education Chairwoman about education issues.
Imagine wanting to take a busy person’s time . I guess her salary is drawn only from the upper crust in the Valley . I know my Rep’s. salary only comes from the downtown area . Right? I knew I supprted term limits for a reason .
Well. . .just think what would have happened if some disabled veterans would have dropped by the good representative’s office. . .
We must not risk grossing out the powdered, likely pierced ears, and teased up/dyed hairdo of a Republican who views public office as class entitlement.
Not only the upper crust of Chesterfield Valley but all of Chesterfield is full of wealthy, snobs!
Good for you, Jane!
Boot those weirdo purple-headed freaks out on their flamin’ behinds.
You can’t compare disabled people to kids intentionally looking like freaks.
Yeah CENTWISTED! Your White Hood is showing again!
Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum –
Why yes…isn’t the newspaper filled with stories of how conservatives, with their outdated fashion sense, strange combovers, sprayed hair and heavy makeup are always denied access to their elected public officials based on nothing more than appearance?
Apparently there are some “conservatives” who forget that holding an elected public office makes the representative an employee of the people. Perhaps some citizens need to gather in her office, which is owned by the public at the state capitol, and announce that her appearance is repulsive and thus she is unable to represent the interests of her constitutents.
To Rhianna -
“You can’t compare disabled people to kids intentionally looking like freaks”
———————————————————————————————————
Apparently you can if the only threshold is whether a conservative dominionist has a weak stomach. . ..
Unless the state has a particular dress/appearance code required of all citizens in order for them to access the elected representatives of their government, Campbell has nothing to stand on. . .after all, she wasn’t elected to use the publicly-owned office as her private domain.
Prissy -
Is there a bible verse which dictates that “freaks” with purple hair should be denied admission to the offices of their elected state representatives?
Or is this a new idea from “conservative” America. . .?
If the woman has no better manners than to treat a citizen of her state in such a manner, she should not be holding public office.
Someone who chooses to make their body a sideshow is hardly the same as someone who is disfigured in an accident or whatever. Common - you must be ashamed of yourself by now.
—————————————————————————————————————————-
to ACentrist -
Is there something in the Missouri constitution, or in the statutes of this state, which declares that all citizens who do not adhere to this week’s “conservative” fashion decisions are barred from discussions with their elected representatives?
I didn’t think so. Perhaps Representative Campbell should consider charm school before running for public office again.
Sorry, folks … but if you want to be taken seriously, you should present yourself seriously.
If those folks showed up in my office for a job, they would be shown the door. If you don’t have enough respect for yourself or you body than to get it all inked up and poked full of holes because you’re pissed off at the world (presumably because it refuses to give you the favor that you think you so deserve), then why would I take any of your issues seriously?
I don’t care for Cunningham, because I think she’s a know-it-all, but I would have done the same thing.
This isn’t an issue about tolerance. It’s an issue about respect.
Oh how I miss the day when people displayed a little sense of propriety. Why is it that we have to stomach someones freakish appearance (at thier own hands) but they can’t respect the fact that their self-mutilation can be offensive, especially to the older generations.
It’s pathetic for you liberals to associate physical deformities or handicaps of people with the self-mutilation of these counter-culture types.
You go into a legislator’s office to lobby some issue, then put on your best appearance and go state your point. I’ve been thrown out of many legislator’s offices while advocating for a bill because legislators don’t like my view, so grow a backbone. And while your at it, why don’t you check on Miss Langston’s myspace page and see how offensive she can be… As a former legislative staff person, I know exactly how people like her can be when they self-righteously march into your office. Don’t believe there visit was as benign as they make it out to be.
I personally feel, from first hand personal experience, that Jane Cunningham is a moonbat. She is one of the most egotistical, self centered people I have ever met and worked with. She is one of the most dangerous type of people: one who believes they are highly intelligent when in fact that probably are about as bright as a 10w bulb.
All that aside, I have to say I agree with her somewhat in this case. For one, it is her office and she can ask anyone she wants to come in or get out and the only people she has to answer to are her voters. Second, this had nothing to do with these two ladies being gay. It had to do with the fact that they do not have the social skills and tact to make themselves presentable when lobbying a state official on a piece of legislation. Yes, I know freedom allows us all to dress as we please but at the same time that freedom doesn’t grant us immunity from the consequences of purple hair and a face full of metal and holes. As another person said, these ladies just got a dose of what the working world is like when your appearance is beyond the mainstream. Now I am sure some liberal somewhere will pass a bill that will prohibit employers from discriminating against piercings and purple hair. But the fact of the matter is they are children. They act like children, looked like children and were treated like children accordingly.
The generation of kids today have no clue how the real world works. They have no clue that purple hair, tattoos and piercings are no conducive to employement outside of maybe a record store or gas station. They believe that “freedom” is a get out of jail free card. And if they cant get a job or are kicked out of a representatives office for the way they dress and look that someone should change laws or protect them or ban that acitviity. Rather than doing the wise thing and just grow up and realize they look like freaks and will probably end up living off the government because they cant geta job in the future. Lesbian, straight, woman, man, white, black or asian…if you come in looking like a carnival prize then you will never get the respect you need to succeed.
rockslide, I couldn’t agree with you more!
————————————————————————————————————————
I’m assuming you shave, Jim, which is one of the causes of infections and in-grown hairs, so let’s not attempt to pretend that your choice of disrespect for your own body is somehow superior to other citizens.
The citizens weren’t calling on you looking for a job. They were calling on their EMPLOYEE, the representative, on business concerning HER job.
Now it might be a new concept for “conservatives” to consider that public servants are actually employees of the people. . .but then Republicans view holding public office as some type of annointed-by-God entitlement based on their own self-appointed visions of social class.
All that aside, I have to say I agree with her somewhat in this case. For one, it is her office and she can ask anyone she wants to come in or get out and the only people she has to answer to are her voters.
————————————————————————————————————-
I’m assuming, since this was the Jefferson City office, that it most certainly does NOT belong to her - it belongs to the citizens of Missouri. She is just occupying it in public trust.
It’s pathetic for you liberals to associate physical deformities or handicaps of people with the self-mutilation of these counter-culture types.
———————————————————————————————————————
Given the state representative’s obvious lack of good manners, perhaps your real yearning should be for someone holding public office which is less worried about appearance and more concerned about substance.
rockslide, I couldn’t agree with you more!
——————————————————————————————-
Hey jim. . .were they at the representative’s office looking for a job, or seeking a discussion about HER job?
Hey…Jim (R),
And Elvis with all those disgusting and blatant sexual hip gyrations, not to mention those long haired hippy freaks named John, Paul, George, and Ringo!
It’s time for your nap now Jim.
How terrible a busy person threw non-constituent disgusting looking people out of her office.
Cut me a break, dress respectfully, and take the dye out of your hair when you go to the capitol. How can you possibly compare someone who was injured in an accident to someone who mutilates their body intentionally?
Kevin,
First of all the office IS their property for their term in office. And yes they can toss anyone out they feel like. They have to answer only to THEIR voters. And these two young ladies were not her constituents so she had every right to ask them to leave. I remember one democrat many years ago that had a sign on his door that simply read “GO AWAY, I do not accept meetings with anyone”
Second, it’s not about looking for a job it’s about their overall demeanor. I have seen these kids go through the captiol bopping into offices dressed like slobs and acting like, well kids. And yet they are amazed they are not treated with respect. You have to show respect to get respect. And when you pop into someone’s office wanting something of them then maybe you should think about how you present yourself.
If appearance didn’t matter than I would imagine that most CEOs and big companies out there would be holding board meetings in their PJs and bathrobes. But the fact is how you carry yourself in public and the respect you show to yourself and your appearance does matter and it matters greatly. Now if I walked into a store populated by a bunch of emos in my suit and tie I would imagine i would get the same looks as these two purpled haired, dart boards got in Jane’s office.
And finally, believe me it pains me greatly to defend Jane. But I rest assured that it will only be a matter of time before she does or says something so asinine and stupid that I will be able to swing back to massively disliking her.
No! It wasn’t about sexual preference. It was about DISCRIMINATION. It would have been the same for her to say I don’t like the color of your skin, it nauseates me. She took one look at them and based all of her decisions on what she saw. They very well could be the next Noble Peace Prize winners. For Centrist to say that society will probabably supporting them is also DISCRIMINATION. DISCRIMINATION is a central theme for the conservative so-called self-proclaimed religious folks.
In Jane’s defense, as she is a friend, of sorts, she has a delicate and sensitive nature. Not where other people are concerned, of course, but as Pat Paulsen would say, “Picky, picky, picky.”
#30–Rockslide. You are sadly mistaken. That is not HER office. That office belongs to the citizen taxpayers of Missouri, and Jane’s sorry a z z is occupying it at the pleasure of the misguided idiots who wasted their precious vote on such a mediocrity. How presumptive of you! Really!
To rockslide -
Nice try. Perhaps you can point to the articles in the Missouri Constitution, or the appropriate statutes, which declare the physical offices in the Capitol of the state of Missouri as the property to their elected representative and not the people of the state. The Capitol building and state offices are not constructed merely by the voters of the district. Moreover, the residents of Missouri came to speak to Cunningham in her capacity of her committee membership which helps shepherd certain legislation - and is not composed of representatives of each district of the state.
The representative may have the right to shut someone out of the office for just cause - and that would refer to behavior, not fashion - I hardly think that would include the choice of hair color or where piercings are located, do you? As for “looking like slobs” who assigned you, or the Republican party, the sole arbiter of the fashion sense for the people of the state? Again, is there an “appropriate” published appearance code for the people of this state to solicit meetings with their representatives?
According to the young ladies, they were both proper and polite in their behavior and demeanor, which included exhibiting far better manners than their employee, the state representative. And the difference between your tale of the Democrat with the sign on the door and THIS case is that NO ONE was allowed in for a meeting on whatever day for the Dem representative and Cunningham employed a completely subjective screening process based on the lowest form of social etiquette. Surely even a conservative would understand the importance of professional behavior and manners in someone holding public trust and public office, or is that expectation completely limited to only some adherence to a hair-and-makeup code?
Attempting to deflect from what was rude and unbecoming social behavior in a public capacity doesn’t change the fact that Rep. Cunningham is a public servant - not royalty. These young ladies did not pop in out of nowhere, but were part of a planned lobbying day which, I’m assuming, only upset Rep. Cunningham because no one consulted her beforehand to inquire as to today’s squeamish hot buttons in her fashion-conscious personality.
Even Republicans surely understand that constituents are widely different appearing individuals coming from widely different circumstances - or perhaps they only represent the interests of those who appear cloned from the same department store catalog.
In Jane’s defense, as she is a friend, of sorts, she has a delicate and sensitive nature. Not where other people are concerned, of course, but as Pat Paulsen would say, “Picky, picky, picky.”
———————————————————————————————————————–
Obviously that doesn’t extend to common decency and good manners.
How terrible a busy person threw non-constituent disgusting looking people out of her office.
Cut me a break, dress respectfully, and take the dye out of your hair when you go to the capitol. How can you possibly compare someone who was injured in an accident to someone who mutilates their body intentionally?
————————————————————————————————————————–
Apparently you know little about the functions of committees in your own state government.
However, it’s refreshing that you view “disgusting looking people” as beneath yourself. . .I’m sure if you ever have occasion to visit your elected officials, you’ll forward them a picture beforehand to ensure that you are non-disgusting looking enough to petition your government. Why don’t you advise the government to pass such a law?
to butcherfan -
“mutilates the body”? what do you call shaving? And, it appears from the representatives own picture, that she likely has holes poked into her ear lobes, dyes her own hair, and wears unnatural makeup. She also likely wears clothing made of flimsy material, unnatural heels to elevate her legs - which also force her to walk unnaturally on the front of her feet, and puts paint on her nails. If we assert your standard, the representative unnaturally mutilates her own body every time she has a waxing and slips on a pair of heels to rush off to the hairdresser and get the gray colored. Then she likely squirts herself from a bottle of unnatural perfume, bathes in flowered or fruit-smelling scents. . .all unnatural.
The only thing pathetic here is how conservatives struggle to justify the improper behavior and incredibly poor manners of an obviously arrogant state representative - who apparently views holding public office as an entitlement based on her own shopping and self-mutilation choices.
State Reps are there to serve the people whom the represent. As a group all the state reps working together make up the system. If these students needed to talk to a state rep, they should have gone to THERE state rep. Weather what is said to have happened actually did or not, that left to be seen. If it happened its wrong, but that is left to be seen. They tell both sides of the story here, why do people automatically look to the worst in someone.
Jane: you take the tax money in the form of a pay check, now you should act like someone who wants to lead. If you don’t want the money or the office, then RESIGN your seat in the House and we will hold a special election and fill it with someone who may at least act the part of a leader.
Leader in Education? You need to return to school and start to understand that many out here neither like nor want you in office because of your childish election stunts, lies about your supporters, lies who you work for (give us a break-Washington DC, now really!)
Save face Jane, resign now or it’s the boot in August as far as that state senate seat goes. We are tired of the BS coming from the elected front men/women now holding office! A little trust would be nice (come to think of it, some honesty from you would be a nice surprise!!)
State Reps are there to serve the people whom the represent. As a group all the state reps working together make up the system. If these students needed to talk to a state rep, they should have gone to THERE state rep.
———————————————————————————————————-
They went to speak to the proper representatives who are members of the House committee which was addressing their concerns. Perhaps a law should be passed which restricts those committees to representatives who are interested in conducting the public’s business instead of those arrogantly attached to obsessive personal issues regarding appearance and hair color.
Cunningham’s behavior is an embarassment to her entire district.
As it turns out, I was standing outside Rep. Cunningham’s office on March 26 as Desiree and Austyn were being ejected. I’m a board member of PROMO, the organization that was lobbying that day for a Safe Schools Bill, and I’m a pediatrician at Cardinal Glennon. The girls were quiet and polite; they were dressed neatly and like teenagers. I’m a 53-year-old white guy. I wouldn’t dress like they do, but a lot of my patients dress like them when they come to my office. They don’t do it out of disrespect. They do it because that is how they and their friends dress, period. No big deal. The point is this: What message does it give to schools, to administrators, to teachers, about youth when the chair of the Elementary and Secondary Education Committee, the person in the Missouri House of Representatives, the woman who should be their greatest champion, is tossing these youth out on the street? Yes, these youth had every right to be lobbying a committee chair about a bill that her committee would be considering, and they had every right to be in the State Capitol to bring that message to legislators. Rep. Cunningmham’s lack of courtesy speaks volumes about her fitness for her committee post.
And Tony, one correction to your original post. You stated that “Lampe wants to see the [Safe Schools Bill] specifically address bullying against students because of sexual orientation.” Not true. The current law in Missouri around bullying states that the bully is to be reprimanded, but there is no provision to find out what is behind the bullying. Is it because of the victim’s race, gender, religion, perceived sexual orientation? The schools are not supposed to ask. They are just supposed to tell the bully to “cut it out.” So if kids in a school are being systematically bullied because they are Muslim, African-American, gay, the school is actively discouraged by current law from getting to the root cause and getting the perpetrators effective counseling. Rep. Lampe’s version would hold schools accountable for finding out why kids are being bullied – and compel them to do something about it.
re 40: Gee Bill, you have your own campaign to work on. Don’t you have something more imortant to do than worrying about Jane Cunningham and her race?
If a state legislator listens to lobbiest then they have to listen to a citizen of Missouri.
Cut the constituent crap
Thanks Ken Haller,
Too many in our government and people period hate to face ugly truths. They prefer to hide the ugly, sick and evil motives behind the actions of those who they falsely uphold as supposedly models of proper good human beings when in fact, these same ones they up hold as up standing people are more often than not rotten and evil to the core. But what can one expect from a narcissistic society?
It is heart breaking that someone of such high standing as Cunningham, someone who people saw fit enough to vote into public office would be capable of treating another human being in this way.
It truly hurts to see how anyone could do anything to any child to break their already confused spirits at that age, and this is outside all the other baggage children may have been forced t o bare in their lives.
It is time for adults like Cunningham to step up to the plate and lead by the example of love and true concern for all our children, not just the ones they find worthy and proper in their warped corrupt minds. Children must be built up and not tore down. The best way to bring change in someones life is through love and example. There have been many who have destroyed childrens lives by breaking their spirits, some of the culprits have been teachers, but always, it is some sick hearted adult.
D Walker your self anointed halo is slanted. How funny, feel good about yourself and appropriate usage of the thesauruses though!
This is so amusing to see all of the Democrats (and Democrats at heart) try and defend two teens that dressed to shock and lie to a Representative. THEY LIED get it through your heads THEY LIED. They should know that lying is wrong under any circumstance, and know that their actions were reprehensible.
Ken- The words “dressed nicely” and “like teenagers” don’t go well in the same sentence. They aren’t supposed to be dressed “Like Teenagers” if they’re advocates for serious policy change they should be dressed like advocates and professionals. Did you see anyone else in the capitol dressed like that aside from your little group and 5th grade classes?
Like Centrist I find Rep.Cunningham’s honestly refreshing. It doesn’t get anymore honest than “Leave”
Dear aBreak: I fervently pray that the voters in the Senate 7th will be refreshingly honest and tell Jane No Thank You in the upcoming election. My lips to God’s ears.
Kevin, is there something in the Constitution that says our public servants should also not be treated with respect? Personally, I am really tired of this “gross” culture our society has now found acceptable. I find dressing appropriately as being respectful and showing common decency and good manners. Do any of you over 50 remember when you went on an airplance and you wore your “good” clothes or went to the Opera or how about men in the old days actually wore suits and ties to the baseball game. Sadly, our culture has lost any class. Now even if you go to a nice restaurant, there’s always some loser in a graffit tee or sweatshirt ( and these are adults). Sorry if I offended anyone because I would like our culture to return to a classier and more respectful day. To me, these people are no different than protestors who go into churchs and throw blood on people or disrupt speeches. These people always look disgusting too.
And Hogan, you blabbering black shirt, that hood comment was totally out of line you goon.
So true CENTRIST!
Did they even have “hoosiers” in the ’20’s–50’s?
Everybody looked classy in the old days.
Okay, I’ve seen a legislator be rude to a student lobbying them before because of actual or percieved or assumed sexual orientation or gender identity when being lobbied on a particular issue but I don’t ever recall a legislator denigrating someone based on their appearance or fashion choice.
I’ve worked in what I feel are conservative financial and brokerage firms where most employees wear suits or more ‘traditional’ business attire(I’m tend to dress quite conservatively myself) and had coworkers in the office with multiple piercings from eyebrow to forehead to septum, rainbow mowhawks, prominent tattoos, etc. and whom everyone respected and loved as coworkers.
But then I also had coworkers who dressed differently for religious reasons such as wearing a hijab.
And, I’ve also had coworkers transition genders on the job and a teacher who transitioned at the kids school.
If she gets this bent out of shape over someone “looking” different and is unable to look past that shallow of a difference, she’d have a lot of trouble getting along in even the more conservative parts of the upper levels of the “private sector” of the economy. Perhaps she should join a cloistered community?
And as far as claiming this has something to do with being a christian I know self professed evangeleical christians with purple hair and multiple piericings.
I’m a little dumber for having read many of these comments. And that much closer to Ms. Cunningham’s constituents (at least the ones who vote for her).
Anyone who thinks Cunningham is justified should move to Saudi Arabia. They have very strict standards about how people can dress there - you’ll be right at home. In the meantime, please do the rest of us in the free world a favor and stop getting the vapors every time you see something that wouldn’t have flown in 1930.
For the record, I wear a suit and tie every day (including Sunday, at least until I get home from Church), and I have both ink and piercings. Some people are intelligent enough not only to reconcile juxtaposed incongruencies, but to judge an individual on the sharpness of their thought and the content of their character. It’s a shame such people do not appear to work in Jefferson City (at least those with an “(R)” by their names).
