St. Charles County elections director Rich Chrismer (father of the governor’s communications chief of the same name) is packing his suitcase this afternoon for a trip Tuesday to D.C.

Chrismer and his wife, Mary, got a handwritten invitation from President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura Bush, to join them at the White House as they hosted Pope Benedict XVI during his visit this week to the United States.

The Chrismers, devout Catholics, will join others on the White House lawn on Wednesday to greet the pope.  That evening, the couple will dine at the White House with the president and first lady. (The pope will not be at the dinner).

Rich Chrismer said he and his wife were thrilled at the opportunity “to see the pope up close and personal. We feel very blessed.”

From a political perspective, the invitation appears to reflect the political importance of Catholic voters in general, and in particular, of St. Charles County to Republicans in state and national elections.

Bush held campaign rallies in St. Charles County during his successful bids for the White House, and right before the GOP’s highly successful 2002 congressional elections. (Bush’s event in St. Charles County on the eve of Missouri’s U.S. Senate race in 2002 is often touted as crucial to Republican Jim Talent’s success in defeating then-Democratic incumbent Jean Carnahan.)

Someone needs to ask the Pope if he really meant what he wrote…that the Church should hide evidence of child molestation by clergy until the various statutes of limitation run.
Chrismer has his chance.
This Pope should be in trial in Texas along with the Big Love folks.

Let’s hope Chrismer takes Jane Cunningham so she can bless the Pope.

Isn’t that something that St. Charles county elects the very Catholic pro-lifer for Elections director. Everyone knows that if you’re pro-life you can count votes and run an office better than if you’re not.

Does anyone think Big Chrismer will ask the Pope to call Baby Blunt and beg him to pardon his son Rich Chrismer for his criminal role in the Scott Eckersly hit job?

If that does work maybe the Catholic Church can arrange for Rich Jr to share a cell with a pedophile priest and Ed “Bunch of Mexcians” Martin.

Note to “Joe”: Fixed the typo. Thanks for spotting it.

And a warning to “Shawn,” et al: you’re veering OFF the point of this post. Blunt’s troubles have nothing to do with the pope.

And those choosing to tie in the pope’s visit with issues involving the Catholic Church need to do respectfully. Otherwise, a bunch of posts are in danger of getting deleted.

I lost respect for all things Papal when the former Pope came to STL a decade or so ago.

It seems ironic, even hypocritical, that the worlds most hyped religious leader was SO afraid of death that he traveled in a bullet-proof bubble through the STL parade route.

If the Pope doesn’t trust the public, and is afraid to die, then we’re all screwed.

I am wondering if our tax dollars are paying the millions it is taking for security and police escorts throughout the U.S. or is this all privately funded? If these are our tax dollars, would we do the same for Billy Graham or another world-famous religious person?
