Special to the Post-Dispatch

It’s a sunny Sunday afternoon. I beseech all readers to go outside for some rays.

But for those  junkies who need a little dose of politics, here it is: Once again, it’s Sunday, and that means – Open Comment Time.

What’s on your mind? What issue or event are we overlooking? Which candidate has you thrilled or up in arms?

Whatever. Post it now.

Just abide by the rules — be civil, at least somewhat concise, and please keep your topics or comments focused on local or regional matters (or the local or regional angle of a national issue.)

So vent!

But don’t forget to go outside. It’s beautiful out there!

What’s up with RBar calling for restrictions on other St. Louis bars? No doubt there is a pent up market for smoke-free bars in St. Louis. But you can’t extrapolate the success of the first few bars that poll their customers and then voluntarily go smoke-free to all bars under a citywide or statewide smoking ban.

Is the Archdiocese banning mock elections in their schools? Did they really send a letter to principals advising them to counsel students who self-identified as Democrats?

I am amazed at the momentum Nixon has built since Baby Blunt backed down from a mano e mano challenge from him.

He was great in Springfield over the weekend and bringing the Montana Governor to rural SW MO was brilliant. Jay is connecting with people from all over the state.

Jay is used to cleaning up after corrupt Republican politicains (Bill Webster anyone?) and he’s the only candidate in this race who can bring accountability and respticablity back to state government.

With only 2 weeks left to collect signatures all Missourians need to take a few seconds and sign the two petitions to end eminent domain abuse in Missouri. This is an efffort organized by Missouri citizens to protect our homes and businesses. You could be the next victim of governments attempt to steal your property to reward some politically connected developer. This is not a liberal, conservative, democrat or republican issue, we are all united on this and we need your help now. We are so close to having the needed signatures. Thank You

Considering the week Barack the Magic Negro has had, This article linking him to gun ban groups wont make it any better from those religious nuts who are bitter and clinging to their guns and their bibles.

All of you snubbed Ron Paul delegates make sure to check out the Missouri Libertarian Party (link above) for some folks more in tune with your ideals.

Jo, last week you reported that State Auditor Susan Montee “now heads Missouri Women for Obama, and she has traveled the country to campaign for” him. As a Missouri taxpayer, can someone please tell me how a state worker can be doing this type of work while on the goverment payroll? Is she still working for the taxpayers who pay her salary or is she running around the country trying to get Obama elected? I am calling Jeff City. Does anyone know if or how this is legal? Is she taking an unpaid leave of absense to be doing this federal election work?

Susan Montee can do whatever the hell she wants on taxpayer money Centrist. She is the Auditor, and nobody wants to get an audit.

Whomever called Barack “the Magic Negro”, know that Senator Barack Obama will look forward to leading you as President of the United States.

As a taxpayer, I’m more concerned over the non-elected, paid staffperson of Sarah Steelman’s office managing her campaign but getting paid by the state of Missouri while doing it. He’s paid over $90K a year and claims to have had 6 weeks vacation time coming when he resigned. When I worked for the state, we got a single check for our unused vacation payout upon resignation. The state didn’t pay it out over the 6 weeks if that’s what you had coming. The scenario that Steelman advances to explain this sounds more like a paid leave of absence, not a resignation. Also, for a guy making that much money working for the state to say it’s his poor man’s way of helping his candidate - to run her campaign while Missouri taxpayers continue to compensate him handsomely - is not credible. I believe starting salaries for lawyers in the attorney general’s office is about $35K and most have twice that in student loans to pay back. People working for Steelman are obviously out of touch with what it means to be real struggling public servants or other middle class taxpayers.

Last month I went to a fundraisr at the Missouri Athletic Club for a state house candidate named Don Calloway. I was truly impressed. Don was smart, extremely articulate, personable, and deep thinking. Also, he had a diverse collection of powerful faces in the place. This is the kind of person we need more of seeking office across the state. I’m not in the 71st district, so I can’t vote for him, but i would encourage anyone to check him out and folllow his career. I think that we may have something special here. http://www.doncalloway.com

That too Penelope. Does anyone have an answer to these questions?

— A CENTRIST

Penelope, this is a very simple thing: What you do on your vacation is YOUR business, not your employer’s. You can spend your vacation climbing Mt. Everest, laying on a beach, drinking yourself into a stupor, working as a missionary, working at a strip bar, whatever … it is your vacation. If you’re a political junky and choose to spend it working on a campaign, that’s ok too.

Lest you misunderstand, I’m not a Steelman supporter, I’m supporting Hulshoff. But that doesn’t mean any scurrilous accusation you can cook up about Steelman carries water. You’re just plain wrong on this one.

Edward “Chip” Robertson

Anyone here know the name?

Small wonder as he is a lawyer, a supporter of Jay Nixon, and while he is under investigation the Post won’t tell you about him.

Jo?

Good call, tsquare. The Columbia Tribune had this a week ago, the Post has ignored it: State Farm has accused Robertson and three other attorneys of “substantial misconduct” in regard to accessing of company confidential databases. And it isn’t as though the Post doesn’t know how to get in touch with Robertson - he was cited as a source in an unrelated Post story a few weeks earlier.

tsquare - I’m Googling! Jo and Tony - Penelope got her answer, what about elected official Montee? You can’t just go after Republicans day in and day out and never properly vetting Democrat candidates.

To Centrist: There’s no law barring elected state officials from getting involved in politics, state time or not.

That said: Montee says she does her politicking for Obama on weekends.

Hope that helps. (I’m off today, so not doing much blogging.)

Who is the REAL Penelope ? Hmmmmmmmmm……………

— Come Clean
7:16 pm April 21st, 2008

Why is Doug Gaston an issue? The real issue this week is Rod Jetton killing judge selection legislation. Oh yeah, I forgot, he’s a “consultant”. Just the same as he is a “consultant” for Rep. Bob Onder who has had more bills come to floor since hiring Jetton, than in the rest of Jetton’s clients, like Jason Crowell. Don’t fear for Jetton, even if the FBI comes a knockin’ on the door . . . he’s probably on a fishing trip with his other “client, friend, donor, or whatever,” Mr. Plaster.

Truthseeker, the only speaker in recent memory to have the feds come knocking was Democratic Speaker Bob Griffin.

And on the subject of high ranking Democrats under criminal indictment … the docket on Missouri case 07CO-CR00725, State vs. Jeff R. Smith, indicates that there is to be a motion hearing at 2:30 this afternoon. May I trust the Post will be ignoring this, since it’s a Democrat that is under indictment?
