Tax break for aircraft firm flies through House

Rex Sinquefield’s objections notwithstanding, the House gave final approval in a jiffy today to a bill offering mega-tax breaks to a Canadian aircraft firm.

The vote was 125-16. The bill now moves to the Senate, where it is having more trouble.

Under the bill, the state could pay up to $40 million a year for 22 years to Bombardier Aerospace for building a plant near Kansas City International Airport. Supporters say it would bring 2,100 good-paying, manufacturing jobs.

Opponents say it’s unclear when — or if — the state would get its money back. Sinquefield’s free-market Show-Me Institute has issued studies questioning the economics of the plan.

UPDATE: Sorry I forgot this earlier. The bill is HB2393.

Is it too much to ask for the bill name or number?

I’d like to know more about the repayment terms–any news on that?

Does anyone ever wonder why Greg Steinoff is the one pushing this bill? He wasn’t even an elected official!
The Show Me Institute did an excellent job of looking over the financial costs. I am all for tax credits, but not in this case. It would only drain money from other services or raise everyone’s taxes.
Furthermore, it may bring jobs to Kansas City, but all of us will see the costs of this. I hope the senate can realize this and vote no.

As one of the hall lurkers - I must say that it didn’t appear that any effort was made to stop this in the House. Sinquefield’s lobbyist either didn’t want it stopped there or - and this is more likely - they think the place to kill it is the Senate.

Having said that - it is interesting to note that the bill was perfected last week with a higher vote tally for it. Perhaps there was some affect of the goings on afer all.

As someone unaligned with the parties in this effort - it is very funny to see a couple of people cause so many other people to scurry more than usual. It has been a very interesting year in Jefferson City. I haven’t seen some of the other lobbyists working so hard since - well I’ve never seen them working so hard.

Mysti, I would think that Greg Steinhoff would be pushing this bill because, as Director of the Department of Economic Development, IT’S HIS JOB!

What I find most interesting is that … here is a PRIME example of legislators who have taken contributions from Sinquefield voting against his wishes.

You see? Despite your constant bantering about Rex “buying” our legislature, the facts just don’t show it out, do they?

How about restoring medicare benefits before giving corporate hand-outs?

Bombardier is a major international competitor to Boeing~And we’re supposed to give them our tax revenue dollars and risk then having to raise our taxes to support the competion?! St. Louians (and ALL Mo’ians) should be against giving a Canadian company $40 million for the next 22 years. Bombardier has a history of bombing~so where’s the gte we’ll see any payback?!! We’re going to invest almost a BILLION dollars to employ 2000 ppl?!

Can you tell us what our Senators are voting on this Virginia?
