This old house: Blunt authorizes mansion repairs

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Saying he wanted to leave the home better than he found it, Gov. Matt Blunt signed a measure today authorizing $3 million in repairs to the governor’s mansion.

“This funding will help ensure that this historic home is in good repair for generations to come,” Blunt said in a statement.

Blunt says the mansion, built in 1871, is in desperate need of a new roof and a fresh coat of paint. The heating and cooling system is also, according to the governor’s office, “well-beyond its life capacity.”

I’m glad that Blunt took the time to actually stay in the mansion long enough to notice that there needs to be improvements.

If I was a elected legislator in Jeff City, I would be embarassed by the lack of attention paid to the upkeep of the Missouri Governors Mansion. It has not recieved any significant monies for structural repairs for decades…as a result, it is a structural disaster. This is a state building that should get the needed funds each year to keep it in good shape…they wouldn’t do this to the Capitol Building or the Truman Building. While I may not agree with Blunt on everyhting, in this case I think he did a good thing that was needed to be done.

Why should a lame duck be granted the authority of spending millions of dollars on this type of expenditure?

Structurally it is sound; aesthetically the building only needs a coat of paint and a new roof….routine maintenance that’s all.

They should sell it and make the governor live in an average size home that is purchased with the profits from the sale of the manse.
