Web Watch: Citizen Tube
Anyone following along this election year would hard pressed not to notice the staggering rise in what the reporter biz is calling citizen journalism. This is being fueled by the continuing increase in bloggers, the availability of low-cost technology, and of course the advent of video sharing sites, most importantly YouTube.
And all of this is part of the Media 2.0 revolution of interactivity, alternative platforms, dynamic publication, blah, blah, blah.
But with all the “content” being produced out there, one can’t possibly have time to stay current and also keep up employment and maybe get out on the tennis court, etc.
Here at Political Fix (and DC Download) I try to give snippets and samples of what might be hot or current, but I barely scratch the surface.
In light of that, YouTube has created a brand-new blog with tons of political potential. Citizentube.com aims to be a near constant feed of political happenings — captures from C-SPAN, video op-eds, campaign trail fodder, analysis, citizen vlogging, creative remixing, candidate ads and so much more. I repeat, so much more.
This isn’t entirely new. YouTube has been occasionally highlighting this content in the past, but this week they formally launched under it’s own special name and web domain.
Unfortunately, the launch appears to have been followed by some stuttering. Right now the most recent post came on Wednesday. And YouTube is apparently incorporating Google’s own Blogger.com CMS, which seems a bit distracting.
But check it out, because I can’t see YouTube letting this one lie dormant much longer.
And here’s to hoping this blog lives up to its full potential as the campaign season rolls on.
