Alderman wants taxpayers to pay board’s fuel costs

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Even at City Hall, high gas prices have drivers concerned.

That’s why Alderman Charles Q. Troupe has a relief plan — for aldermen, at least.

Troupe plans on introducing a bill at tomorrow’s meeting that would give alderman an “expense account” for their fuel costs.

While “riding the ward” is a staple of aldermanic duty — right up there with returning phone calls and sending birthday wishes — it seems unlikely that Troupe’s colleagues would endorse his plan to charge taxpayers for their gas.

It could send the wrong message to voters who have had to do their own belt tightening because of higher prices at the pump. Plus, aldermen recently rebuffed Board President Lewis Reeds push for extra security — seems like it would be a bad time for aldermen to pursue a perk of their own.

The most distant points in Troupe’s ward are just 2.7 miles apart. Perhaps, with the nice weather arriving, Mr. Troupe could try “walking the ward” instead. It’s good for his health, good for the environment, and saves money on gasoline too. Another option would be a bicycle - you could get from one end of his ward to another in just a few minutes by bike.

Quincy is entertaining but I hope he is kidding.

First, the Part time Pres and do nothing Accountant want drivers and now the Board of Aldermen want money to pay them to drive around?

Wow. Vote the bums out.

How about they work to extend the MetroLink across town completely and further out, then they could ride with everyone els downtown and others will also benefit.

Expense Account? They already have one!! The Aldermen split over $100k for expenses annually. You can also use campaign funds, if your constituents think you’re worth anything.
