Bright idea: City garages to go green
Jake Wagman
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

St. Louis Treasurer Larry Williams is the latest city official to go green.

Williams, the city’s ex officio parking czar, announced plans Wednesday to replace 1,134 light fixtures at four city garages with “high-efficiency fluorescent” bulbs.

Not only will the new lights save money, Williams tells us, but, because they are brighter, the bulbs will also increase visibility and safety in city garages.

“This program will enable us to save money and be more environmentally friendly,” Williams said.

The release was sent out by veteran PR man Mack Bradley, who has apparently begun working with Williams as he launches a campaign for a seventh full-term. (Yes, seven - Williams has had the post since 1981, when he was appointed by former Mayor Vince Schoemehl to fill a vacancy in the office.)

Williams move to make city parking more eco-friendly follows greening efforts by Mayor Francis Slay, who recently reiterated his plans to ban bottled water at City Hall.
