Cynthia Davis gets new Demo opponent

Democrats in St. Charles County have shuffled their lineup for the November election - coming up with a new challenger for Rep. Cynthia Davis, R-O’Fallon.

County committee members from townships in Davis’ 19th District on Wednesday night chose Debbie Cook as their new candidate. Cook has some name identification from her unsuccessful race for the O’Fallon City Council in last month’s election.

Cook, an X-ray technician, replaces Bill Whitmore, a retired professor who recently withdrew his candidacy.

No one else filed for the seat, so Davis and Cook will square off in the November election.

It is my hope for the people of the 19th that they will embrace a female candidate with a grasp of something other than right-wing, ultra-conservative, uber-evangelist, hair-brained talking points. Mrs. Davis’ record conjures up a caricature of everything insidious and backwards about the paternalistic value-cons and their agenda. The consituents in the district and the rest of the state deserve real representation in the legislature on issues that more than a handful of people care about and that have some actual priority, not to mention relevance, in the day to day lives of the citizenry.

And yet, Davis will walk away with the election in November.

Could it be that the people of the district know more than you do about who represents their views?

No, Jim, the people who voted for Ms. Davis didn’t vote for her, they voted for a party of limited taxes and government, one which wouldn’t lie to them and, for a safer America. That’s why the area and the country will vote Democratic in ‘08!!!

Cynthia Davis was good for an odd quote or strange headline occasionally, but I need a state representative who does the work, gets things done and is actually in tune with her district. Debbie Cook is a real person who is in tune with her neighborhood and the 19th district. She has a lot in common with the young families in the district. They want good schools and worry about health care and the economy. Not whether the history books use BC or BCE when talking about events before the Christian era or all of this hoopla about midwifery. Cynthia has no idea how real people live their lives. Her life has been nothing but strange,

Debbie Cook will bring some sanity along with common sense representation, the kind that’s been missing in action since Ms Davis was first elected to the 19th. Anyone who had held a
job in the real world has a leg up on Cynthia.

Jim, I didn’t mean to imply I know what motivates the voters of the 19th (although a couple of folks that live there have registered revealing comments). I merely said it was my hope that they were ready to embrace a representative that is more in tune with what concerns the majority of Missourians as they go about their day to day lives (raising families, relying on public education and public safety, trying to live without too much government intrusion into private matters). Again, they deserve as much. I hope you’re wrong about them.

When caught spending her cammpaign funds to pay her real estate taxes Cynthia told the Associated Press “Campaign finance rules are extremely complex, At no time have I intentionally violated Missouri campaign finance laws.” No, in fact, this provision is entirely clear, Ms. Davis. What is it about the following it that is confusing? It reads: 1. Contributions as defined in section 130.011, received by any committee shall not be converted to any personal use.”

Cynthia is no novice to campaigns and campaign finance. The last election was her 8th campaign and she’s a veteran at soliciting and collecting campaign contributions. She’s experienced at spending the funds also, so there’s no way for her to use the excuse of not knowing.

Cynthia’s bills from the previous session were her most outlandish attempts at passing any legislation. Luckily they did not pass.
I
tried to pick the most insane, but it ultimately ended up in a tie between
HB 34 “Eliminates the requirement that course materials and instruction on human sexuality and sexually transmitted diseases include discussion of contraception methods”
Don’t teach children that fire will burn; just teach them to stay away from it. We can’t have Missouri students being too informed, now can we?

HB 35 “Requires that all biology textbooks sold to the public schools of the State of Missouri have one or more chapters containing a critical analysis of origins”
(READ: Creationism belongs in science textbooks) Well, that textbook bill would pretty much cut out 95% of the science textbooks in the general market, unless one has the “Texas version” to cover their creationism mandate. I would like to know if Rep. Davis is financially cozied up with any of the “Christian” publishing houses that would reap the benefits of provided new biology textbooks for every school in the state?

Cynthia’s best quote ever: “I have a friend who wanted a C-section for no reason — just because she wanted it. But then you’ve got other women who have gone to the hospital (to give birth), and the experience they’ve had after they’re undressed and poked and prodded (with) tubes and tools in every opening there is, and it feels very similar to being raped.”
